Pour cet humanisme, l'autre est celui qui ne possde pas la culture du juste (athmistos), le barbare, donc celui qui, au lieu de pratiquer la vertu, s'applique l'exercice de la violence. Cette culture, comprenant la fois une dimension thique et juridique, transforme une vie d'anarchie et de laideur, symptmes de l'injustice, en une vie d'quilibre et de beaut piliers de la justice et du droit. Contrairement l'humanisme d'aujourd'hui fond sur la ressemblance des visages et sur l'galit des existences, l'humanisme hellnique est fond sur la dissemblance. Dans l'humanisme moderne et postmoderne, toutes les vies humaines possdent la mme valeur ontologique, c'est--dire une valeur inhrente l'homme en tant qu'homme.

The disappearance of the French simple past has been hotly debated since the early 20th century. This volume offers an overview of its fortunes since French emerged as a language, provides a description of its distinctive features, and discusses the potential impact of its supposed demise on the whole French verb system. These assumptions are tested against a large corpus of contemporary texts. The study concludes that, despite the erosion of its meaning and its increasingly infrequent use, the simple past tense is still used by native speakers in various contexts, and no single substitute has yet emerged. Nevertheless, the simple past may be evolving into a stylistic marker, making it fertile ground for future cross-linguistic studies.

My purpose in these studies is to example a careful reading of the too easily despised, too hastily evaluated and too frequently misunderstood poetry of the French fifteenth century. I have begun at the tum of the century with three of the more substantial writers of the first generation (Nesson, Char tier, Taillevent), and while I have in each case read the poet's entire work I have tried to concentrate my efforts on the single poem which seemed his most substantial in terms of the number and importance of the concerns which animate it, the vigor and complexity of his response, and the expres sive richness of the poem as a whole. I have tried in each instance to say only what seemed most relevant and essential, not with respect to any preconceived system but by allowing the categories of my treatment to arise out of a full and extended response to the work itself. When one interrogates a poem in terms of pre-established categories one is all too apt to find what one is seeking and to find only that.
