This Lexicon, aimed at NGOs, lawyers, diplomats and students, follows the same method as the Lexicon of Human Rights - Les définitions des droits de l'homme, published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers in 2008. Definitions related to the environment are gathered by extracting them from relevant universal scope texts. This ordered grouping of definitions will enlighten the reader about the priorities of the international community regarding environmental law. Definitions are classified in alphabetical order, in separate English and French lists. In each language there is an alphabetical list of common terms with the equivalent second language term in square brackets. The list gives the exact detailed meaning followed by the source of each term. Following this list, a lexicon of the same terms is given under such general themes as "Mammals", "Gas", "Lead". Finally, a list of relevant documents which can be referenced for further information is included.

his book, published in 2011, is a product of the research conducted at the Center for Studies and Research of the Hague Academy of International Law in the summer of 2008. The Centre, devoted to the "implementation of international environmental law", attracted twenty talented young scholars from nine different countries. This volume contains the introductory report of the two directors of studies, in English and in French, a selection of the best papers prepared by the participants, as well as a general index and a comprehensive bibliography. The topic of the 2008 session is of both practical and theoretical interest. International environmental law, despite the rapid proliferation of treaty instruments in the area, is plagued by difficulties in implementation. The search for enhanced effectiveness of international environmental law has yielded many innovations at the institutional and normative levels. In seeking to better understand these innovations, their emergence, deepening and diffusion, this volume highlights the major shifts in and challenges faced by international environmental law and, indeed, international law itself.

'There is no shortage of recent dictionaries covering environmental law on reference shelves. What distinguishes this titles is its inclusive coverage of the international scene. For example, where all environmental law dictionaries have an entry for acid rain, Gilpin's Dictionary informs the reader about acid rain problems in Sweden, Norway, Germany and The Netherlands in addition to the United States and Canada. This Dictionary is useful, with balanced coverage of environmental issues throughout the world. . . due to its global inclusiveness and clear, nontechnical language, this dictionary should prove very useful on shelves of all types of libraries and for environmental, political, and legal practitioners.' – Georgia Briscoe, American Reference Books Annual 2002 'Gilpin addresses the elements of environmental law with an indispensable survey of the subject. . . . The strength of this dictionary lies in its international coverage. . . . Language is nontechnical and easily accessible to general readers. . . . Gilpin is recommended for those libraries and individuals interested in international environmental law.' – S.R. Moore, Choice 'I thought Gilpin's work was excellent. The coverage was thorough and extremely helpful without getting overly bogged down in unnecessary details. I also felt that there was a very useful balance between national coverage (as of European Union and United States statutes, concepts and cases) and international agreements. I am certain that scholars, political decision makers, legal practitioners, environmental activists and reference libraries will want to have Gilpin handy. It may well become an indispensable reference work in environmental law and policy.' – Thomas S. Ulen, University of Illinois, US This new dictionary makes an important and innovative contribution to the reference literature on the environment. International in scope, it provides up-to-date entries on macro and micro issues in environmental law in both developed and developing countries. Written by an author with both practical experience in the field, and six previous dictionaries to his name, this book adopts non-technical language to improve access to key topics in environmental law. It combines the use of case studies, best practice models, straightforward definitions and clear explanatory boxes. This dictionary will be invaluable to everyone involved with environmental law; including students of law as well as those in engineering and the social sciences. It will also provide essential reference for all official national and international agencies, environmental protection groups and NGOs, plus environment and planning departments at every level.

Environmental Principles written by Nicolas de Sadeleer and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-10-30 with Law categories.

This book traces the evolution of environmental principles from their origins as vague political slogans reflecting fears about environmental hazards to their embodiment in enforceable laws. Environmental law has always responded to risks posed by industrial society but the new generation of risks have required a new set of environmental principles, emerging from a combination of public fears, science, ethics, and established legal practice. This book shows how three of the most important principles of modern environmental law grew out of this new age of ecological risk: the polluter pays principle, the preventive principle, and the precautionary principle. Since the first edition was published, the principles of polluter-pays, prevention, and precaution have been encapsulated in a swathe of legislation at domestic and international level. Courts have been invoking environmental law principles in a broad range of cases, on issues including GMOs, conservation, investment, waste, and climate change. As a result, more States are paying heed to these principles as catalysts for improving their environmental laws and regulations. This edition will integrate to a greater extent the relationship between environmental principles and human rights. The book analyses new developments including the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, the case law of the European Court of Human Rights, which has continuously carved out environmental duties from a number of rights enshrined in the European Convention of Human Rights, and the implementation of the UNECE Convention on Access to Information.
