By the grace of God and with eternal thanks for the support (and patience) of my dearest friends and family, I can say proudly and with a humble heart: I have FINALLY completed my very first book, "Life Is Not Complicated, You Are: Turning Your Biggest Disappointments Into Your Greatest Blessings". In it, I chronicle how the principles my beloved parents and grandparents imparted helped me conquer life's challenges and, more importantly, appreciate its blessings. Through their wisdom and guidance, I found strength, discovered insight, developed my faith and nurtured a desire to be a constant source of encouragement in the lives I touch directly and indirectly. Lessons that help us survive our greatest difficulties should be shared. I call this dynamic a "transfer of strength" and believe it will have a positive ripple effect! The intent of this novel study is to provide lessons and suggestions for Secondary English educators as an opportunity to discuss difficult coming of age topics with our students. As educators, we are aware that there are many ways to approach a novel study. This novel study guide approaches the content through a social justice lens. The lesson plans are designed for a 4 to 6 week novel study. The novel study addresses the narrative as a reflection of a wealth of knowledge, an opportunity to share experiences, and shared privileges from the perspective of the author. Each chapter is titled with a quote reflective of the chapter's content. These quotes are duplicated in the study guide and intended for student reflective purposes. Some chapters have been grouped together as the themes within the chapters are closely related. The suggested page grouping should be ideally read during class and then remaining sections for homework. Students are encouraged to read in class as much as possible. Reading in class promotes a connectedness with the text. Most of the assignments for "Life is Not Complicated, You Are" have been constructed with small groups in mind. Ideal groups should consist of 3 to 4 students. This novel is intended to be discussed as the subject matter commands small and large group discussions. There are links provided where students can hear Mr. Wallace not only tell a little about himself as one is autobiographical, but also propel the narrative.
