Losers written by Michael Lewis and has been published by Vintage this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-11-13 with Political Science categories.

Michael Lewis is a master at dissecting the absurd: after skewering Wall Street in his national bestseller Liar's Poker, he packed his mighty pen and set out on the 1996 campaign trail. As he follows the men who aspire to the Oval Office, Lewis discovers an absurd mix of bravery and backpedaling, heroic possibility and mealy-mouthed sound bytes, and a process so ridiculous and unsavory that it leaves him wondering if everyone involved—from the journalists to the candidates to the people who voted—isn't ultimately a loser. The contenders: Pat Buchanan: becomes the first politician ever to choose a black hat over a white one. Phil Gramm: spends twenty million dollars to convince voters of his fiscal responsibility. John McCain: makes the fatal mistake of actually speaking his mind. Alan Keyes: checks out of a New Hampshire hotel and tells the manager another candidate will be paying his bill. Steve Forbes: refuses to answer questions about his father's motorcycles. Bob Dole: marches through the campaign without ever seeming to care. Losers is a wickedly funny, unflinching look at how America really goes about choosing a President.

Everyone Rides The Bus In A City Of Losers written by Jason Freure and has been published by ECW Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-09-25 with Poetry categories.

In the words of Margaret Thatcher, “A man who, beyond the age of 26, finds himself on a bus can count himself as a failure.” Everyone Rides the Bus in a City of Losers is about wandering Montreal’s streets, with an eye on the storefronts and alley cats, and one foot already in the nearest dive bar. From a series of poems about every station on the Metro to music venues long shut down, it’s sometimes fantastical, nostalgic, funny, and even joyful — a sucker for landmarks, always looking out for glimpses of the Farine Five Roses sign, the Jacques Cartier Bridge, the cross on Mont-Royal, and anything still neon. Montreal’s rich literary tradition is celebrated: A.M. Klein, Leonard Cohen, Heather O’Neill, Gail Scott, Richard Suicide, and Gaston Miron all make their way into the poems. The book also ventures from the hip hot spots of The Plateau and Mile End to Verdun, Côte-des-Neiges, NDG, St-Henri, Petite-Patrie, and Ahuntsic. A restless spirit propels the text further and further into new neighborhoods, but always returns downtown. This is a book about those who’ve seen the city turn its back on them and leave them out in the cold. Who get lost in boroughs east and west. Who get lonely, garble their French, and never manage to find a seat at their favorite coffee shop. In Jason Freure’s psychogeography, everyone’s a flaneur. And everyone rides the bus.

Winners And Losers written by Chris Hamnett and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-07-15 with Political Science categories.

First published in 1998. The growth of home ownership since the end of the Second World War marks one of the most fundamental social changes to have taken place in Britain. From being a nation of renters at the end of war, Britain has been converted into a nation of home-owners. In 1945 approximately 25% of households in Britain owned their own homes. Today the proportion is just over two-thirds. In the process, the proportion of households renting from private landlords has fallen from 65% to about 8%. As a result, the home ownership market in Britain plays a far more important role today than hitherto: both in housing the population and as a potential source of capital gains and losses. In addition, the home ownership market plays a significant role in the overall health of the economy. This is not to deny the importance of social and private rented housing or the major problems of homelessness. It is simply to assert that the home ownership market now affects two out of three households in Britain, and many more who wish to gain access to it. This book is about the dramatic booms and busts of the home ownership market in Britain during the last twenty years: and their causes and consequences both for the individuals involved and for the economy as a whole. It argues that the home ownership market in Britain, particularly in southern Britain, where the booms and slumps have been experienced most sharply, has been akin to a casino. There have been big winners, but there have also been big losers. The last thirty years have been a roller coaster ride for owners: exhilarating, but potentially highly dangerous, not least for those who fell off, or were thrown off, in the slump of the early 1990s.
