This unique volume is not just an in-depth analysis of Professor Swaminathan's brilliant contributions to basic cytogenetics, radiation biology, mutagenesis and genomic affinities of cultivated potato and its wild derivatives, but also the application of the new knowledge gained to improve the productivity of agricultural crops, as also to enhance their resistance to a variety of biotic and abiotic stresses. No other earlier biographies of Professor Swaminathan bring out these salient dimensions of his scientific achievements made at the Wageningen University, The Netherlands, Cambridge University, UK, and Wisconsin University, USA as well as Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi. This biography is also unique for its revelation that Professor Swaminathan's contributions par excellence have been in contemporary areas of crop improvement for productivity and resistance to pests and diseases. This volume is also unique in bringing out that Professor Swaminathan, Father of India's Green Revolution, wanted to use this chemically intensified system only to gain 'breathing space' and went on to propose a 'systems approach' — based evergreen revolution in order to 'achieve productivity in perpetuity' through various pathways of ecoagriculture, and also integrated it with avenues for on-farm and non-farm livelihoods. Towards this goal, he made innovative uses of ecotechnologies in a 'biovillage' paradigm and modern information and communication technology (ICT) in Village Knowledge Centres (VKCs) to provide skill and knowledge empowerment respectively of the resourcEpoor rural women and men towards sustainable management of the natural resources for creating income-generating on-farm and non-farm livelihoods. This volume also brings out how Professor Swaminathan elegantly combined intellect and labour (hard work), and professional zeal with compassion for the poor. He is always open to new ideas, and new technologies without of course, compromising the values of traditional knowledge and ecological prudence of the rural and tribal people. This volume nicely captures how Professor Swaminathan with a deep and comprehensive understanding of the threats to the ecological foundations of agriculture and sustainable rural development, environmental degradation, social inequities and the climate change risks, has also harnessed science and technology to convert challenges into opportunities. This volume is written in a manner to serve also as a text book, going beyond the scope of just a biography. That should benefit generations of students on one hand, and sustain an interest in the book for many years on the other.

This work by Karl-Julius Reubke embodies labours of experience and reflection spanning almost 20 years. It is rich with many kinds of detail but above all Reubke’s work accomplishes something the late German philosopher Hans-Georg Gadamer called a Horizontverschmelzung, a merging of horizons in service of an act of understanding. Reubke, a German himself, a former chemist, a follower of Rudolph Steiner, a self-taught Sanskrit scholar and translator of ancient texts, sympathetically merges those horizons with an equally complex set of horizons arising from India: the post-colonial search for a coherent tradition in one of the oldest civilizations, the emergence of early modern spiritual and nationalist thinking, the complex challenges posed by Gandhi’s ethico-spiritual vision, and then finally, from the contemporary India driven and riven by the forces of globalization, the horizon of a civil/social movement inspired by Gandhi and Vinobha, namely Ekta Parishad. Reubke describes this movement, inspired and led by PV Rajagopal from the inside with a personal touch and a uncannily reflective eye. All of this is an accomplishment of some note and worthy of our attention especially as we now turn to confront how we as people of the planet will face the ecological disaster our way of living has created. This too is a task of “comprehension” which Hannah Arendt described as the work of “the unpremeditated facing up to, and resisting of, reality—whatever it may be.” - Paul Schwartzentruber, Independent Scholar and Activist, Halifax, Canada If you wish to know what Satyagraha is all about, read this candid, reflective account of the struggle for freedom and justice Gandhi and his contemporaries waged during the twentieth century and P V Rajagopal and Ekta Parishad have been engaged in during the 21st. Extremely timely and morally challenging. - Manoranjan Mohanty, Former Professor of Political Science, University of Delhi, New Delhi, India This book is invaluable in challenging us to develop nonviolent mass movements addressing the needs of those who are oppressed and suffering the most, the impoverished, the exploited, those thrown off their lands, adivasis, women, and why such movements are necessary for greater peace and justice. - Douglas Allen, Professor of Philosophy, The University of Maine, USA This brilliant book, the first major scholarly study of Ekta Parishad, demonstrates how rights-based mass mobilisations in contemporary India adapt Gandhian ideas in their struggle for justice and in negotiating state politics and policies, with grit and compassion. - Arnab Roy Chowdhury, Assistant Professor, Higher School of Economics (HSE), Moscow, Russian Federation This impressive volume addresses the topic, which is possibly the most important of our time: global solidarity. And it does so from the perspective of the global South, drawing especially on Gandhi and Ekta Parishad. The result is a very unique combination of scholarship and vision for the future that is a must-read for all students of India and Indian thought but also for those looking for inspiration in the times of global crisis and the return of nationalisms and fascisms. - Boike Rehbein, Professor, Humbolt University, Berlin, Germany In a world in deep need of global solidarity as we enter an era challenged with the Covid-19 pandemic, global economic devastation, the continuing epidemic of racism, and with an existential climate crisis, Ekta Parishad shines a bright new light for humanity and our human challenges. This book and this organization confront these challenges boldly and head-on. Jai Jagat!! - David Blake Willis, Professor, Fielding Graduate University, USA

Two Groundbreaking Scientists and Their Conflicting Visions of the Future of Our Planet 'Does the earth’s finite carrying capacity mean economic growth has to stop? That momentous question is the subject of Charles Mann’s brilliant book.' Wall Street Journal In forty years, the population of the Earth will reach ten billion. Can our world support so many people? What kind of world will it be? In this unique, original and important book, Charles C. Mann illuminates the four great challenges we face – food, water, energy, climate change – through an exploration of the crucial work and wide-ranging influence of two little-known twentieth-century scientists, Norman Borlaug and William Vogt. Vogt (the Prophet) was the intellectual forefather of the environmental movement, and believed that in our using more than the planet has to give, our prosperity will bring us to ruin. Borlaug’s research in the 1950s led to the development of modern high-yield crops that have saved millions from starvation. The Wizard of Mann’s title, he believed that science will continue to rise to the challenges we face. Mann tells the stories of these scientists and their crucial influence on today’s debates as his story ranges from Mexico to India, across continents and oceans and from the past and the present to the future. Brilliantly original in concept, wryly observant and deeply researched, The Wizard and the Prophet is essential reading for readers of Yuval Noah Harari’s Sapiens or Jared Diamond’s Guns, Germs and Steel, for anyone interested in how we got here and in the future of our species.

Prosperous Nation Building Through Shipbuilding written by and has been published by KW Publishers Pvt Ltd this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-03-15 with categories.

This book elucidates the potential of the shipbuilding industry for initiating economic development, which eventually leads to enhancing the prosperity of a nation. This is explained by intrinsically linking the macroeconomics of the nation with the microeconomics of the shipbuilding industry. The economic and commercial spin offs by the shipyard to the various industries have been analysed and calculated. An attempt has been made to trace the illustrious past of Indian shipbuilding from the Bronze Age, through the ancient kingdom period, to the present times, in the backdrop of Indian maritime history. The operational requirement of commercial as well as defence shipbuilding has been analysed to assess the available potential market space for the Indian shipbuilding industry. Lessons from history help to formulate future strategies. In pursuit of this, the book investigates the global trends in commercial shipbuilding since the industrial revolution period to date; the success stories of leading shipbuilding nations viz.UK, USA, Japan, Korea and China have been analysed. The benefits accrued by these nations through shipbuilding have been summarised. The strategies adopted by each of these countries to reach the pinnacle in shipbuilding have been examined and the salient features relevant for India have been identified. Productivity measurement in shipbuilding has been examined and the problems with the current system have been highlighted, along with solutions. This book suggests the usage of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), a mathematical linear programming technique, as an appropriate tool to measure total productivity as well as profitability. The various ways of improving profitability in shipbuilding, by way of cost-cutting techniques, along with some Indian case studies have been explained in the book. Keeping the ‘Indian Maritime Agenda 2010-2020’ vision document in the backdrop, a strategic appreciation of the Indian shipbuilding industry has been undertaken using the SWOT, the Matrix and the Scenario analyses. Based on these analyses, strategies have been formulated for all the stakeholders who can influence the Indian shipbuilding industry. The book then identifies the need for an alchemist leader, who can harmonise all the stakeholders and thereby propel the Indian shipbuilding industry towards achieving the long-term goal of creating a prosperous India.

'Superb' Sunday Times 'Revolutionary' Alice Roberts 'Hugely important' Jim Al-Khalili _______________ A radical retelling of the history of science that foregrounds the scientists erased from history In this major retelling of the history of science from 1450 to the present day, James Poskett explodes the myth that science began in Europe. The blinkered Western gaze focusing on individual 'genius' - Copernicus, Newton, Darwin, Einstein - was only one part of the story. The reality was an utterly global, non-linear pattern of cross-fertilization, competition, cooperation and outright conflict. Each rupture in history carved fresh channels for global exchange. Here, for the first time, Poskett celebrates how scientists from Africa, America, Asia and the Pacific were integral to this very human story. We meet Graman Kwasi, the African botanist who discovered a new cure for malaria; Hantaro Nagaoka, the Japanese scientist who first described the structure of the atom; and Zhao Zhongyao, the Chinese physicist who discovered antimatter. _______________ 'Remarkable. Challenges almost everything we know about science in the West' Jerry Brotton, author of A History of the World in 12 Maps 'Perspective-shattering' Caroline Sanderson, The Bookseller, 'Editor's Choice' 'Horizons upends traditional accounts of the history of science' Rebecca Wragg Sykes, author of Kindred 'Poskett deftly blends the achievements of little-known figures into the wider history of science . . . brims with clarity' Chris Allnutt, Financial Times
