From Paul Verhoeven’s The Cold Heart in 1950 to Konrad Petzold’s The Story of the Goose Princess and Her Loyal Horse Falada in 1989, East Germany’s state-sponsored film company, DEFA (Deutsche Film-Aktiengesellschaft), produced over forty feature-length, live-action fairy-tale films based on nineteenth-century folk and literary tales. While many of these films were popular successes and paved the way for the studio’s other films to enter the global market, DEFA’s fairy-tale corpus has not been studied in its entirety. In The Politics of Magic: DEFA Fairy-Tale Films, Qinna Shen fills this gap by analyzing the films on thematic and formal levels and examining their embedded agendas in relation to the cultural politics of the German Democratic Republic. In five chapters, Shen compares the films with earlier print versions of the same stories and analyzes revisions made in DEFA’s film adaptations. She also distinguishes the DEFA fairy-tale films from National Socialist, West German, and Disney adaptations of the same tales. Her archival work reconstitutes the cultural-historical context in which films were produced and received, and incorporates the films into the larger narrative of DEFA. For the first time, the banned DEFA fairy-tale comedy, The Robe (1961/1991), is discussed in depth. The book’s title The Politics of Magic is not intended to suggest that DEFA fairy-tale films were merely mouthpieces of official ideology and propaganda. On the contrary, Shen shows that the films run the gamut from politically dogmatic to implicitly subversive, from kitschy to experimental. She argues that the fairy-tale cloak permitted them to convey ideology in a subtle, indirect manner that allowed viewers to forget Cold War politics for a while and to delve into a world of magic where politics took on an allegorical form. The fact that some DEFA fairy-tale films developed an international audience (particularly The Story of Little Mook and Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella) not only attests to these films’ universal appeal but also to the surprising marketability of this branch of GDR cinema and its impact beyond the GDR’s own narrow temporal and geographic boundaries. Shen’s study will be significant reading for teachers and students of folklore studies and for scholars of German, Eastern European, cultural, film, media, and gender studies.

Obwohl viele Kinder erstmals und oft ausschließlich im Religionsunterricht der Grundschule mit biblischen Texten in Kontakt kommen – die dort ablaufenden bibeldidaktischen Prozesse also elementare Bedeutung für die Entwicklung des Bibelkonzepts tragen –, gibt es bisher kaum empirische Erkenntnisse über die diesbezügliche Praxis. Den Vorwurf eines unreflektiert normativen Gebrauchs biblischer Erzählungen im Grundschulreligionsunterricht hinterfragend, untersucht die Autorin in Form einer rekonstruktiven Analyse videographisch aufgezeichneter Unterrichtseinheiten, wie biblische Erzählungen hinsichtlich ihres besonderen Wesens als menschliche Glaubenszeugnisse im Religionsunterricht der Grundschule erarbeitet werden. Welche expliziten und impliziten Hinweise auf das Konzept vom biblischen Text lassen sich etwa in der Unterrichtskommunikation identifizieren und welche Deutungsspielräume eröffnet die Präsentation der Texte seitens der Lehrkräfte für die SchülerInnen? Die praxistheoretische Studie gewährt einen in dieser Art bisher nicht vorhandenen Einblick in die sich innerhalb des alltäglichen Religionsunterrichts dokumentierende habitualisierte bibeldidaktische Handlungspraxis. Numerous children have their first and only contact with biblical texts in religious education in elementary schools. Thus, biblical-didactic processes have essential meaning for the development of the biblical concept. However, there are still few empirical information about its methods. Therefore, the author questions the reproach of an unreflected normative use of biblical narratives in religious education in elementary schools by using a reconstructive analysis of video recordings of teaching lessons and by depicting how biblical narratives are being conveyed with regard to their uniqueness as human testimonies. Which explicit und implicit hints of the concept of biblical texts can be identified in the teaching communication and how can the text presentation by teachers can be interpreted by students? This practical-oriented study offers an insight in documented, habitualised, biblical-didactic methods of everyday religious education.

Einfallsreich und listig erzählt er vom Froschkönig und vom gestiefelten Kater, von der Prinzessin Mäusehaut, von Hans im Glück und wie das eigentlich war mit des Teufels drei goldenen Haaren. Das Lumpengesindel ärgert den Taxifahrer, gegen die schlaue Gans ist der Fuchs machtlos, und Hans mein Igel wird zum gefeierten Medienstar.“ Die Geschichte JANOSCHs, wie auch allgemein die Gattung Märchen, eignen sich sehr gut für den DaF-Unterricht, da sie aufgrund ihrer erzähltechnisch geringen Komplexität und auch sprachlichen Einfachheit dem Anfangsniveau angemessen sind.4 Die vorliegende Hausarbeit zielt auf eine wissenschaftliche Betrachtung der Entfremdung und Verfremdung und welches Potential die Anwendung von Verfremdungsstrategien im Deutsch-als-Fremdsprache-Unterricht hat.

To what extent do minority writers feel represented by the literary canon of a nation and its body of "great works"? To what extent do they adhere to, or contest, the supposedly universal values conveyed through those texts and how do they situate their own works within the national tradition? Building on Edward W. Said’s contrapuntal readings and Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak’s reflections on the voice of the subaltern, this monograph examines the ways in which Rafik Schami, Emine Sevgi Özdamar, and Feridun Zaimoglu have re-read, challenged, and adapted the German canon. Similar to other writers in postcolonial contexts, their work on the canon entails an inquiry into history and a negotiation of their relation to the texts and representations that define the "host" nation. Through close analyses of the works of these non-native German authors, the book investigates the intersection between politics, ethics, and aesthetics in their work, focusing on the appropriation and re-evaluation of cultural legacies in German-language literature. Märchen thematisieren existenzielle Probleme des menschlichen Lebens und zeigen dabei immer auch einen Weg, wie diesen Schwierigkeiten begegnet werden kann. Obwohl dies in einigen Disziplinen bereits zunehmend erkannt wurde und sich dort eine entsprechende Praxis eingerichtet hat und auch weiterhin entwickelt, spielte die Bedeutung von Märchen in der Sozialen Arbeit bisher keine Rolle. Mit dem vorliegenden Buch stellt die Autorin daher die Frage nach einem möglichen Nutzen von Märchen für das Selbstverständnis und die Praxis Sozialer Arbeit. Die Aktualität der Frage nach dem Selbstverständnis Sozialer Arbeit ergibt sich dabei aus dem „Identitätsproblem“, welches ihr oftmals zugeschrieben und vielfach diskutiert wird. Die Frage nach dem Selbstverständnis setzt, im Sinne eines biografischen Arbeitens, die Auseinandersetzung mit der Geschichte Sozialer Arbeit voraus, sodass ihre historische Entwicklung einen wichtigen Teil dieses Buches darstellt und die Grundlage für die märchenhafte Auseinandersetzung mit der Frage nach ihrem Selbstverständnis bietet.
