En el terreno que nos ocupa, el de la medicina, parece evidente que los aspectos ideológicos se han ido disolviendo en una creciente tecnificación de la práctica de la misma, donde la relación entre el médico y el paciente está mediatizada por un entramado científico-técnico abrumador. A su vez, las campañas sanitarias centradas en los conceptos de riesgo y en los estilos de vida saludables, se han vaciado aparentemente —pero sólo aparentemente— de cualquier atisbo ideológico, utilizando la estadística como instrumento objetivo que avala científicamente las actuaciones propuestas. A esto hay que añadir la internalización, por parte de los ciudadanos, de la salud como un valor que estructura nuestras vidas. Precisamente esa asunción de la salud como un valor aceptado por la población contribuye de manera importante a sustraer a la medicina de sus implicaciones ideológicas. El conjunto de trabajos que forman este volumen indaga en las relaciones entre medicina, ideología e historia, mostrando cómo se han ido configurando en el tiempo los conceptos de salud y enfermedad, y cómo ambos no han sido nunca elementos neutrales. También se explora el papel de la medicina en la construcción de identidades y en la catalogación de los individuos, cuestiones íntimamente ligadas a la ideología. Por último, los diferentes proyectos y concepciones de la medicina y salud están presentes en varios ensayos de este volumen. El origen del mismo está en el XIII Congreso de la Sociedad Española de Historia de la Medicina celebrado en Madrid entre los días 15 y 17 de septiembre de 2005 en la Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid y en el Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas bajo el lema “La condición histórica de la medicina”. El libro, pues, es representativo del amplio panorama por el que se mueve la historiografía de la medicina en nuestro país en este comienzo de siglo.

Making a fresh contribution to the political history of science, this book explores the connections between the science policies of three countries that each experienced considerable political upheaval in the twentieth century: Spain, Italy and Argentina. By focussing on these three countries, the contributors are able to present case studies that highlight the characteristics and specificities of the democratic and dictatorial political processes involved in the production of science and technology. It demonstrates that alongside the political critique of Franco’s dictatorship, Martín-Santos’ creative writings are an attempt to destroy the prevalent masculine myths of Western patriarchy, and a proposal to create new myths for the future.

La Segunda República representó un periodo de efervescencia en el campo psiquiátrico, que cristalizó en un conjunto de medidas legislativas que sentaron las bases de una profunda reforma asistencial, alimentada por el deseo de regenerar, modernizar y democratizar el país. Tras la Guerra Civil y el triunfo de los golpistas, la Dictadura franquista cercenó la reforma psiquiátrica republicana e impulsó una psiquiatría altamente politizada en concordancia con una imaginaria tradición cultural española, antimoderna, ultracatólica, autoritaria y nacionalista. La evidente diferencia entre ambos programas psiquiátricos no fue más que una manifestación de un proceso de ruptura más amplio emprendido por el franquismo para destruir la obra republicana y de todo aquello que tuviera relación, a ojos de los vencedores, con el liberalismo, la democracia, el marxismo y la subversión obrera. Sin embargo, pese a las diferencias, hubo elementos que se mantuvieron en ambos periodos históricos. Este libro pretende profundizar en el análisis de las continuidades y rupturas entre el periodo republicano y el franquista, estudiando en diversos planos (modelo asistencial, psicopatología, higiene mental, psiquiatría y defensa social, psicoanálisis y asistencia psiquiátrica) qué hubo realmente de novedoso en los primeros años de la dictadura y qué de herencia.
