As the essays in this volume show, conceptualizing dementia has always been a complex process. With contributions from noted professionals in psychiatry, neurology, molecular biology, sociology, history, ethics, and health policy, Concepts of Alzheimer Disease looks at the ways in which Alzheimer disease has been defined in various historical and cultural contexts. The book covers every major development in the field, from the first case described by Alois Alzheimer in 1907 through groundbreaking work on the genetics of the disease. Essays examine not only the prominent role that biomedical and clinical researchers have played in defining Alzheimer disease, but also the ways in which the perspectives of patients, their caregivers, and the broader public have shaped concepts.

Strong evidence continues to accumulate indicating that amyloid-beta (Aß) is a central part of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathogenesis in spite of the negative evidence coming from failed clinical trials. Therefore, mechanisms of clearance of Aß are of great interest in understanding AD pathogenesis and the development of effective treatments. This topic focuses on the issues related to Aß clearance in AD. The topics covered include proteases that degrade Aß and their localization, regulation, and functions. This topic also covers issues related to clearance through uptake by glia and through low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor mediated mechanisms. Signal transduction related to AD pathology and clearance is also addressed. Finally, immunotherapy and other novel therapeutic approaches are discussed.

This book represents the third in a series of International Conferences related to Alzheimer's (AD) and Parkinson's (PD) diseases. The first one took place in Eilat, Israel, in 1985; and the second one in Kyoto, Japan, in 1989. This book contains the full text of oral and poster presentations from the Third International Conference on Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Diseases: Recent Developments, held in Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A. on November 1-6, 1993. The Chicago Conference was attended by 270 participants. The Scientific Program was divided into nine oral sessions, a keynote presentation, and a poster session. The conference culminated in a Round Table Discussion involving all of the participants in the conference. The four and one-half day meeting served as an excellent medium for surveying the current status of clinical and preclinical developments in AD and PD. There were 59 oral presentations and 93 posters. This book incorporates a majority of both.

Alzheimer's disease has received growing attention in recent years because the affected population is growing quickly as life spans in America creep ever upward. As they near retirement, many Americans start to fear that any minor memory lapse-misplacing the keys or forgetting a name-might spell Alzheimer's. In reality such incidents are a normal part of the aging process. In Alzheimer's disease, such incidents progress to a point at which they interfere with normal daily activities on a regular basis, and memory loss becomes progressively more disabling. This book is written for anyone interested in learning more about Alzheimer's disease-people who have it, their families and caregivers, professionals who serve such people, teachers, and anyone with a general interest in the disease. An important feature of this book is clear explanation of the basic biology of the disease. Here is information about who gets the disease, how it is diagnosed, and what happens to people who have it. A large section is devoted to the subject of caring for affected individuals, including legal and financial planning advice and pointers for finding outside support services. Existing treatments are discussed along with suggestions for handling many symptoms without drugs. Understanding Alzheimer's Disease describes the most current knowledge of how and why it arises and gives information about the many avenues being explored in search of a cure. With its chapters on causes and on the search for treatments, this guide will be of interest to a wider section of the population than other books on the disease.

Any mention of the relationship, still poorly understood, between body (or brain) and mind invariably invokes the name of Descartes, who is often thought of as the father of modern philosophy and perhaps of neurophilosophy. Although a native of the heart of France (the region around Tours), Rene Descartes travelled widely, as everyone knows, especially to Holland and Sweden. It should come as no surprise, that the Congress of Neurophilosophy and Alzheimer's Disease was the first in the series of Fondation Ipsen Colloques Medecine et Recherche to be held outside France. The meeting was held in San Diego (California) on January 11, 1991. This venue was chosen for a number of reasons. The University of California San Diego is without doubt one of the most dynamic universities today. A good number of friends of the Fondation Ipsen who have taken part as speakers in previous conferences are based there. Patricia Churchland, whose publications have helped "launch" the term "neurophilosophy", also teaches there. The choice of this particular venue gave us the welcome opportunity of benefiting directly during the conference from the participation of many eminent (including some Nobel Prize-winning) scientists, including biochemists, neuro scientists and "alzheimerologist", psychologists, cognitive science specialists and philosophers.
