Le società occidentali contemporanee sembrano inevitabilmente multiculturali. La presenza nelle società di individui e gruppi che hanno riferimenti culturali diversificati aumenta la complessità sociale e sembra rimettere in discussione non solo le forme di riconoscimento e di solidarietà che si basano sull'identità nazionale, ma la possibilità stessa di fondare le relazioni quotidiane su un insieme condiviso di nozioni date-per-scontate. Rispetto all'analisi classica del multiculturalismo, la prospettiva del multiculturalismo quotidiano, qui proposta, intende evidenziare il carattere di "costruzione sociale" delle differenze, analizzando come esse siano effettivamente utilizzate all'interno di concrete e specifiche situazioni di interazione quotidiana. Dopo aver fornito una definizione teorica di multiculturalismo quotidiano e averlo posizionato all'interno della riflessione sociologica contemporanea, il volume mette alla prova la prospettiva analitica proposta presentando quattro differenti contesti di interazione quotidiana in cui la differenza viene utilizzata, in forma tattica o strategica, come elemento rilevante per la definizione della situazione e per la costruzione della realtà sociale.

This book paves the way for a more enlarged discussion on religion and migration phenomena in countries of Northern and Southern Europe. From a comparative perspective, these are regions with very different religious traditions and different historical State/Church relations. Although official religion persisted longer in Nordic Protestant countries than in South Mediterranean countries, levels of secularization are higher. In the last decades, both Northern and Southern Europe have received strong flows of newcomers. From this perspective, the book presents through various theoretical lenses and empirical researches the impact mobility and consequent religious transnationalism have on multiple aspects of culture and social life in societies where the religious landscapes are increasingly diverse. The chapters demonstrate that we are dealing with complex scenarios: different contexts of reception, different countries of origin, various ethnicities and religious traditions (Catholics, Orthodox and Evangelical Christians, Muslims, Buddhists). Having become plural spaces, our societies tend to be far more concerned with the issue of social integration rather than with that of social identities reconstruction in society as a whole, often ignoring that today religion manifests itself as a plurality of religions. In short, what are the implications of newcomers for the religious life of Europe and for the redesign of its soul?

The notion of global citizenship education (GCE) has emerged in the international education discourse in the context of the United Nations Education First Initiative that cites developing global citizens as one of its goals. In this book, the authors argue that GCE offers a new educational perspective for making sense of the existing dilemmas of multiculturalism and national citizenship deficits in diverse societies, taking into account equality, human rights and social justice. The authors explore how teaching and research may be implemented relating to the notion of global citizenship and discuss the intersections between the framework of GCE and multiculturalism. They address the three main topics which affect education in multicultural societies and in a globalized world, and which represent unsolved dilemmas: the issue of diversity in relation to creating citizens, the issue of equality and social justice in democratic societies, and the tension between the global and the local in a globalized world.
