Literature traditionally holds a special place in society. This fact can be ascribed especially to literature's unique capability to urge its audience and readers to allow a voice other than their own to resound within. In this innovative collection, an international group of scholars come together to discuss literary metaphors and cognitive metaphor theory. The volume's goals are three-fold. The first aim of the book is to present some recent approaches to metaphor which have no immediate connection with cognitive metaphor theory and have developed independently of it. While the cognitive approach has become the leading paradigm in the English speaking world, elsewhere (in Europe) rhetorical, semantic, and logical models have remained in use and continue to be elaborated. These models have so far had little international exposure. Their inclusion in this study is meant to provide a balance to the cognitive paradigm and to open up a possible discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of cognitive metaphor theory for the analysis of literary texts. The second aim of the collection is to illustrate a range of successful applications of the new cognitive models to literary texts. And, the third aim of the study is to provide an assessment of cognitive metaphor theory from a literary point of view.

Wat kan literatuur, in de zin van fictie, betekenen voor het recht en de rechtsvinding? Literatuur komt in opstand tegen een abstracte, wetenschappelijke benadering van de ander. Ze ontsluiert concrete werelden en personages en vraagt daarmee aandacht voor het horen van de menselijke stem in het recht. Dat is de literaire benaderingswijze van het vakgebied ‘Recht en literatuur’, die ijvert voor een meer persoonlijke benadering in het recht en zich richt op humaniteit en erkenning van de ander. Door het lezen van literatuur kan de rechter een zeker empathisch vermogen en een zekere verbeeldingskracht ontwikkelen, die het oordeelsvermogen ten goede komen. Dit pleidooi van de zogenoemde ‘narratieve rechtsethiek’ voor empathie en menselijkheid is belangrijk in weerwil van een wetenschappelijke opvatting van het recht en rechtvaardigheid. Deze recente inzichten en thema’s in ‘Recht en literatuur’ roepen echter vragen op. In welke mate slaagt ‘Recht en literatuur’ in het bieden van een alternatief dat rechtvaardigheid en menselijkheid realiseert? Wordt de narratieve rechtsethiek zelf niet ook geconditioneerd door blikveldbeperkende doctrines en dogma’s? Wat is de werking van empathie en is het empathisch vermogen inderdaad toereikend om de ander te leren kennen? Wat is precies de kracht en de reikwijdte van de poëtische benadering in recht en politiek? Vanuit een lezing van literaire werken van Fjodor Dostojevski, Jean-Paul Sartre en Albert Camus worden deze vragen beantwoord. Onder verwijzing naar de Joodse filosoof Martin Buber ontwikkelt zich het dialogisch-literaire perspectief van de ontmoeting en wordt een kritiek van de narratieve rede geformuleerd.

What does it mean to violate the law on a theatrical stage? This is the central question in the following examination of modern theatre, beginning with the avant-garde, but also including the contemporary and iconoclastic work of the Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio. For the historical avant-garde, art could be the gateway to a new and liberated reality. But then all of existing reality first had to be demolished, and its laws consistently violated. Ultimately, this transgressive programme ends in discouragement and self-sabotage. Such an 'anti-theatre' has been explored most extensively in the writings of the French director and essayist Antonin Artaud. A careful exploration of Artaud's work, emphasizing his actual theatrical productions, shows that this paradox does not necessarily lead to a dead end. Generalized transgression may lead to a theatre that belongs more to philosophy than to art itself.

For the first time since Chevrels seminal monography Le naturalisme: étude d’un mouvement littéraire international (1982), this study presents an encompassing approach to European naturalism. By means of a logical theoretical framework drawing on both comparative literature and narratology, Pieter Borghart proposes a more nuanced definition of naturalism than those traditionally found in the existing literature. By analyzing naturalism in 19th century Modern Greek literature, the second part of this monography concretely shows how this definition offers fruitful perspectives to reassess literary history.
