Can't take the first step in becoming an author? Afraid you'll suck at writing? Have you ever... Heard that little voice inside your head, whispering that your writing sucked? Simply felt too terrified to start writing? Had the wind knocked out of your sails-been critiqued by a "well-meaning" person and - decided that they were right and gave up? Read and read motivational books on writing only to end up more fearful afterward? Compared yourself to "successful" writers and decided that you'll never measure up? If so, congratulations! You're a writer! And I'll tell you what no other motivational mushery book about becoming an author will tell you-in the beginning... We all sucked when we first started. I'll tell you a little secret. All those authors you want to be just like? The "Stephen Kings" and the "Nora Roberts" the... The list of successful entrepreneur authors is endless. But you know what? When they started, the first sentence each one of those authors you want to be wrote ... sucked. The only difference between them and you? The successful authors overcame their fear of writing! I used to be a yearning and scared-to-death wannabe author. I'm assuming that if you're reading the book description of a book called Authorphobia, chances are high you're looking for a little bit of writer inspiration and motivation like I was-you may be having a little fear of failure about becoming a writer. But all the motivational "la la" books never spoke to my writing soul ... so I'm doing what I always do, writing a book to fill that void. The best way to overcome your fear of writing? Let me suggest that before you read another tired book that starts out with "FEAR is just False Expectations Appearing Real," you embrace the one thing that will crush your writer fear faster than anything I know-humor. Learning to Laugh Fear in the Face My goal with this book was to get down and dirty with your fears and expose the naked truth of them-show them for what they are. Common, communicable if you're not careful, controllable, and ultimately conquerable using the one thing that human beings have relied to survive dark nights in the forest of our irrational fears. Nervous, naughty, sometimes a little nasty, and necessarily sarcastic wit. This is not your grandma's writing inspiration book. At the publication of this book, there are at least a dozen "Author quote, 'authorpreneur', get over your fear, there-there Johnny or Sally, everything will be okay, hand-holding" books you could read that'll have you convinced in no time that all this author stuff is easy-peasy lemon squeezy. This ... is not one of those books. Are you ready for some reality? This book will: Help you laugh at your fear of the word "suck." Introduce you to the "Goldberg the Goalie" technique for fear-busting. Give you some of the best old-dead-author quotes you'll ever read. Show you tons of "suck-busters" to help you start writing. Poke fun at just about every sacred cow of writing I could think of. And best of all-reveal my super-secret "fear of bad reviewers" cure-all. (hint: it involves chicken blood) Sometimes an ice-cold bucket of sarcastic suck smackdown is just what the doctor ordered to shock you out of a drunken stupor of fear. Luckily, this bucket of blood of a book is so full of suck-busting smackdown that you may never be afraid to write again. If you've had enough of your sucking fear getting the best of you and you'd like to turn the tables on it once and for all, scroll up and click the BUY button at the top of this page! You have nothing to lose, but your fear of sucking writing.

Congratulations You just finished writing your first novel "What do I do next?" If you're like I was, that was the first question you asked yourself. Do you remember what I said last time? In "Nine Day Novel: Writing?" Steve, I totally remember: You said, "Bravo Pop champagne and..." You remember that part after the champagne about calling someone, right? Your Editor-the Last Line of Defense. But editors cost a lot of money and wouldn't be helpful if we could minimize some of that expense by doing a little bit of editing ourselves? Before we send it off to an expensive professional? Don't make the mistake I did On my first novel, I debated for months between paying an editor and whether I should just "edit" the entire thing myself. After all, how hard it be, right? Predictably, money won out, and I chose poorly, publishing my first book before a professional editor had proofread it. That was a big mistake. That one decision set my writing career back about a year. Why? Because my book languished on Amazon as yet another unprofessional, unfinished and unwanted draft, posing as a completely finished novel. I got discouraged, disappointed and down. It took months before I overcame my fear of what a professional editor would say about my first novel. Because that was the real reason I had edited it myself all along. A great editor will make your novel shine. Picture your reader, trying to follow the fantastic story that you painstakingly outlined, researched and wrote. As they read, their eyes are interrupted by misspellings, grammatical errors, improper word usage and dialogue that's punctuated poorly. Finally, unable to stay engaged through those constant interruptions, they give up and close your book. We're not going to let that happen Your editor will have the single biggest impact on the professional look and feel of your novel. But that doesn't mean we can't do a little bit of "editing" ourselves. In fact, inside this book, I'll show you how you can do quite a bit of self-editing before your draft needs to go to an editor. And that'll save you money. Removing the mystery. To many beginning authors, editing is a mysterious and often misunderstood process. In this book, I'll define the types of editing you need, outline the parts that you can and should do yourself, and then explain the process that your editor will go through as they clean up what's left. No idea where to find an editor? I'll show you how to find a good one on popular freelancing sites. If that doesn't work, I'll give you the contact information of my own editor Then I'll introduce you to a piece of software that'll save you countless hours in turnaround time, working with your editor. And I'll walk you through the steps my writing partner and I use to fix our own drafts before they go to our editor. Editing is much easier if you make fewer mistakes in the first place. Seems simple, right? It should be. For that reason, I felt it was important for this book to have two parts to it: How to clean up what you had already written ... and how to minimize all that cleanup by knowing what and how to write fiction sentences in the first place. So the first half of the book is about editing process and work-flow. And the second half is a refresher course on the very basics of writing fiction sentences. And the bonuses... I created tutorial videos to show you exactly how I've cut Word loose and now collaborate directly with my editors inside Scrivener. So whether you've never worked with an editor before or you just want to save some time, money and headache editing your next draft, I wrote this book for you

“Attention reveals a fresh, vital literary voice as it covers seemingly every imaginable topic relating to modern life.”—Entertainment Weekly “Joshua Cohen may be America’s greatest living writer.”—The Washington Post NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY WIRED One of Granta’s Best of Young American Novelists, Joshua Cohen arrives with his first collection of nonfiction, the culmination of two decades of writing and thought about life in the digital age. In essays, memoir, criticism, diary entries, and letters—many appearing here for the first time—Cohen covers the full depth and breadth of modern life: politics, literature, art, music, travel, the media, and psychology, and subjects as diverse as Google, Donald Trump, Bernie Sanders, fictional animals, Gustav Mahler, Aretha Franklin, John Zorn, landscape photography, fake Caravaggios, Wikipedia, Gertrude Stein, Edward Snowden, Jonathan Franzen, Olympic women’s fencing, Atlantic City casinos, the closing of the Ringling Bros. circus, and Azerbaijan. Throughout ATTENTION, Cohen directs his sharp gaze at home and abroad, calling upon his extraordinary erudition and unrivaled ability to draw connections between seemingly unlike things to show us how to live without fear in a world overflowing with information. In each piece, he projects a quality of thought that is uniquely his, and a voice as witty, profound, and distinct as any in American letters. At this crucial juncture in history, ATTENTION is a guide for the perplexed—a handbook for anyone hoping to bring the wisdom of the past into the culture of the future. Praise for ATTENTION “Dazzling in its scope . . . If curiosity is a writer’s greatest innate gift, Joshua Cohen may be America’s greatest living writer.”—The Washington Post “Cause for celebration and close study . . . [Cohen] will hunt after neglected shards of the past, minor histories, and charge them with an immediacy in the present. . . . He is experimenting with the essay form much more, and more cleverly, than any major American writer today.”—The Wall Street Journal “In Attention, Joshua Cohen makes an eclectic argument for how to improve our lives. . . . [He] tackles a surprising range of subjects to underline distraction’s role in our fraught predicament and to argue that paying attention could help us get out of it. . . . When it comes to making sense of our times with verve and imagination, few authors are more rewarding.”—Financial Times

From the USA TODAY bestselling author of Sweet Thing and Nowhere But Here comes a love story about a Craigslist “missed connection” post that gives two people a second chance at love fifteen years after they were separated in New York City. To the Green-eyed Lovebird: We met fifteen years ago, almost to the day, when I moved my stuff into the NYU dorm room next to yours at Senior House. You called us fast friends. I like to think it was more. We lived on nothing but the excitement of finding ourselves through music (you were obsessed with Jeff Buckley), photography (I couldn’t stop taking pictures of you), hanging out in Washington Square Park, and all the weird things we did to make money. I learned more about myself that year than any other. Yet, somehow, it all fell apart. We lost touch the summer after graduation when I went to South America to work for National Geographic. When I came back, you were gone. A part of me still wonders if I pushed you too hard after the wedding… I didn’t see you again until a month ago. It was a Wednesday. You were rocking back on your heels, balancing on that thick yellow line that runs along the subway platform, waiting for the F train. I didn’t know it was you until it was too late, and then you were gone. Again. You said my name; I saw it on your lips. I tried to will the train to stop, just so I could say hello. After seeing you, all of the youthful feelings and memories came flooding back to me, and now I’ve spent the better part of a month wondering what your life is like. I might be totally out of my mind, but would you like to get a drink with me and catch up on the last decade and a half? M
