Overcoming My Mother’s Addictions is a heart-wrenching but inspiring true story about Lili, an 11-year-old girl, who has faced tremendous challenges and upheavals in her formative years because of her mother’s addiction to drugs. Lili gives us hope by displaying a positive outlook which has helped her overcome horrific situations. Through her optimistic perspective, she has gained insight into the life lessons that have shaped her into the fine, thoughtful young lady she is today. This book is written to inspire teens to recognize their true value and to understand that their parents’ choices do not need to define their present and future happiness. It is also designed to help grandparents raising their grandchildren better understand the debilitating effects of adverse childhood experiences. Counselors and teachers will find this book beneficial in opening the lines of communication with younger children to determine how best to provide them much-needed support. This book is also written to inspire addicts to move into permanent recovery, encouraging them to break their destructive cycle and rebuild healthy relationships. *********************************************** “Devastating realities of how abuse and neglect can alter a child’s life are simply stated in this true story of one girl’s journey. Not just another story, but a heart-felt truth of abuse and neglect told through the eyes of a child. As a psychotherapist for over 25 years, I have seen how the trauma of abuse and neglect forever changes how one sees the world. Having at least one strong, positive support person in an abused person’s life can provide the needed hope for a positively changed future. Lili’s journey is far from over but her hope for being a world changer and helping others understand the effects of abuse and neglect will continue to empower her and readers of her story.” —Denise J. Books are like people, each one has its own story. My book is a story about teenagers with an addiction for drugs and the adverse effects these addictions have on their parents. My hope is that this book will present a picture of the many changes that can present themselves in the lives of young people and parents in their battle with mind-altering drugs. Many parents, unfortunately, are lost in the complexities of our everyday busy lives and their minds are clouded to the problems that are developing before them. Many of us are either oblivious to the problem of drugs or are too afraid to admit to ourselves that we do not know what to do if it happens in our families. Parents are sadly convinced that drug addiction can never happen to their children. My wife, Jane, and I had to face that sudden realization that drugs were destroying the life of our son. I believe that my book, when read in its entirety, will give you the guidance and insight to help all parents and their children to fight drug addiction and to render proper guidance to those already in the grip of mind-altering drugs. This book will help to illuminate those hidden changes that drugs can bring into the lives of our children and teenagers, and with it the effects it will have on those around them. I hope and pray that the sharing of this valuable information, along with my own experiences, will be a positive force in the thinking of our teenagers and their loving parents. My fellow parents, it is of the utmost importance that no matter what happens and how tough it may get, remember there is no other way but up. Wherever you are and whatever the problem, dont ever stop the fight against drug addiction. I am aware that in the hard-nosed world we live in, there are a multitude of self-help books, and numerous concepts and scientific theories on how to successfully face your problems and bring about changes in your life. But I have written my book for this reason: that parents can be hopeful in a time of adversity, suffering from a family drug addiction problem. Let faith and understanding change your life around. As parents, we often read about drugs and the effects they have upon our children. Invariably, our many conversations will drift to the topic of drug addiction and whether our children are in fact using drugs, and what we can do about it. I remember sitting with a group of parents discussing drugs. Although we all agreed that the rapid introduction of mind-altering substances was a critical problem to our children, not everyone was in agreement what we should and could do about this problem if it affects our family. Some parents told us our family is very content since all our children are young, this problem doesnt pertain to us at this time. Some parents sat back and told me that their teenage children have never taken drugs. They never had to discuss drugs with their children because they knew they would never touch them. A third group of parents were honest enough to admit that their teenage son was a drug addict for years and they didnt know it, and when they found out about it they didnt know what to do about it. Parents, do these statements sound familiar? Perhaps something you have heard before but shrugged it off as something you would never have to worry about. I realize that this is a sad scenario, but very true. Too many parents are not taking the time to talk to their children and establish a drug-free family when they are young and vulnerable. The result has been too many young people becoming drug addicts. Some of them could have been prevented or helped at a young age. That initial help must come from us as their parents. We must have a constant sense of awareness of this problem facing our children today. Remember, parents, we cannot change the nature of the drug addict or his addiction, but we can help

Much of Mark Mehigan's twenties read like a how-to manual: How to get very drunk without raising people's suspicions you might be an alcoholic. Outwardly successful, inside he was drowning. Nearing 30, he was hurtling towards a nervous breakdown and using payday loans to fund a burgeoning cocaine habit. His only choice was to finally relinquish control and ask for help. In doing so he discovered a life beyond his wildest dreams. This new way of life embraced letting stuff go. Giving things up. He discovered the power of rigorous honesty, how to live without relying on destructive behavioural patterns and the joy of letting people in instead of keeping them out. Mark's story is one of recovery and sobriety. It brilliantly articulates the societal pressures that can leave people feeling isolated and lost, and offers a path to finding your own sense of 'good enough'. Perhaps Mark's story can be the spark that ignites that journey for you, or at the very least a guide on how not to mess up your life. Either way, it's definitely not a self-help book.

Jennifer Needle in Her Arm explores the emotional turmoil that parents go through when they have either lost a child to drugs or have to deal with a child currently addicted to drugs. Bonnie Kaye, who lost her daughter Jennifer in 2002 at the age of 22, suffered the guilt and shame almost all good parents go through in the aftermath of losing a child to drugs. In this book, Kaye talks about the journey she and her daughter went through together, and how in the end, nothing she did changed the outcome. She shares some articles she wrote in the years following her loss to help people understand what parents go through with a drug-addicted child. Kaye has also included a number of heart-wrenching writings that Jennifer gave to her to share with others in hopes that they would read about her pain and not have her daily struggles of survival. One passage includes these words of despair and hope: Dear Addiction, What have I ever done to you to deserve all this pain and agony? You have taken everything from me. My family’s trust, my family’s sleep, my sleep, my apartment, car, jewelry, etc. But worst of all you’ve taken my sanity, my life, and me. I think of you every day. I even dream about you at night. I’m sure your only thoughts about me are to totally destroy me. I love you yet hate you so much. No matter how hard I fight, you are stronger. I’m 19 but feel 69 because of you. You have robbed me of my childhood. Because of you I have killed, robbed, sold drugs, sold myself, and hurt everyone close to me. You’re a liar!!!! You swore you would make things easier for me. You swore I wouldn’t have to worry about anything. You promised fun and heaven. But all you have given me is hurt and agony and a living hell. This is my life and I’m taking it back. I’m going to win this battle. I PROMISE. The book is comforting to parents who continue to suffer from shame, guilt, and feelings of helplessness. They will realize they are not alone--and they are not responsible.

My Beautiful Daughter is an inspirational true story about a daughters fight against drug addiction through the eyes of her mother. Louise goes from a happy contented child, to a self destructive drug addict. The impact that it would have on her family especially her parents is key to it all. The story starts where the mother is looking back over the years to when it began, and how she coped with trying to help her daughter, but at the same time having to come to terms with the fact that she may lose her. It covers the constant battle over the lack of help and advice for parents from the professionals. Whilst dealing with her grief on a daily basis, she struggles to understand why this is happening. Then she has to come to terms with the revelation that a terrible event caused her beautiful daughter to take heroin in the first place, leaving the whole family distraught. Finally as her daughter battles to stay clean, a serious life threatening health problem is diagnosed which is one of the consequences of her years of drug abuse. Every time her mother thinks that its nearly over, another challenge emerges and another fight begins. This is a very emotionally charged account of pure desperation from her parents, determined to get back the daughter they feel is lost to them, never giving up hope and at times barely keeping sane, and while their daughter fights her addiction they have to face up to the trauma that led to her drug abuse.
