In the northwestern corner of the great peninsula of the Peloponnese, close to the meeting point of the Cladeus and Alpheus rivers, lies a peaceful river valley overlooked by the steep-sided Hill of Cronus. Here, between the eighth century BCE and the fourth century CE, rival athletes competed for glory in the ancient Olympic Games. Every four years, and from every corner of the Mediterranean world – from Samos to Syracuse and from Sparta to Smyrna – they descended on this quiet corner of southern Greece sacred to Zeus, seeking to excel in disciplines as diverse as sprinting, boxing, wrestling, trumpet blowing and chariot and mulecart racing. The victors of these ancient games may have been awarded crowns of olive leaves in recognition of their achievements, but these original Olympics were no idealistic celebration of the classical aesthetic of grace and beauty shared by all of the participating Greek city-states, but often a bitterly contested struggle between political rivals. Robin Waterfield paints a vivid picture of the reality of the ancient Olympic Games; describes the events in which competitors took part; explores their purpose, rituals and politics; and charts the vicissitudes of their remarkable thousand-year history.

"Olympia was among the most important sites in the ancient Mediterranean world, not only because of its famous athletic games, but also because of its religious sanctuary, oracle, and political importance. Its games attracted 45,000-50,000 people to the site, who came to watch male athletes compete for everlasting glory. The winners were entitled to erect bronze statues of themselves in the Altis, the most sacred area of the site, where they stood among images of gods and heroes. Cities and rulers triumphant on the battlefield trumpeted their successes with sculpted monuments at this sacred site. Rulers and kings, Greek and Roman, visited Olympia, competed in the games, bestowed monuments on it, and took others away as booty. Everyone who was anyone in antiquity had to leave their mark at Olympia, and the monuments they left behind were not placed haphazardly but engaged in dialogue with each other. A Cultural History of Olympia explores the development of the site from the construction of its first monumental building c. 600 B.C. to its transformation into a Christian site in the fourth century A.D. Organized chronologically, and focusing on themes such as warfare, marriage, and exemplary conduct, this study traces how the site changed, how monuments interacted with each other, and what this place and its monuments meant to ancient patrons and visitors. This is the first holistic view of the site and one that offers the latest research with beautiful illustrations in a manner accessible to all readers"--

On August 1, 1936, in Berlin, to the sound of Hitler's opening words and hundreds of doves set aflight, the Summer Olympic Games began. Here were sixteen days of heroism, aesthetic and athletic perfection, and a triumph of determination and will - not least by the legendary artist Leni Riefenstahl. The filmmaker and photographer was commissioned to document these spectacular games for posterity. Her film Olympia is one of the results of this experiment. The other is this volume, Olympia, a startling collection of images of athletes, of sport, and of intense drive resulting from these games. Riefenstahl utilized innovative and ground-breaking camera angles, techniques, and styles in order to create her vision of the Olympics. Her stark realism is revealed in these shots of strength and determination. The artist presents divers, swimmers, sprinters, jumpers, vaulters, and others as specimen, the ultimate practitioners of their art forms, and by these efforts, the portraits of these men and women reach a zenith of Riefenstahl's own art. Leni Riefenstahl's visual genius is fully evident in this remarkable collection of black and white photographs. Through her lens, we view the epitome of the beauty of athleticism, the excitement of competition, and the pressure of the political atmosphere. Olympia is a remarkable record of human idealism, Olympic excellence, and photographic skill.

This book began to take shape following a conference on the Statue of Zeus at Olympia held at the University of Queensland in July 2008. In line with the main themes of the conference, the book has two fundamental aims: the first is to recognise the unsurpassed reputation of the Zeus in antiquity, to move beyond the framework provided by the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and to treat the famous statue in depth, as befits its unique importance in ancient times; the second aim is to employ a variety of interdisciplinary perspectives in the hope of capturing more accurately than before something of that unique importance. The book is aimed at academic specialists in a variety of disciplines (such as art, archaeology, history, literature, and cultural poetics), though it is also intended to be accessible to undergraduates and certainly to research students. The audience will primarily be one interested in classical antiquity, but there are chapters which trace the story and influence of the Zeus through the Byzantine, Renaissance, and early modern periods, and into more recent centuries in both the northern and southern hemispheres.

Athletes And Oracles written by Catherine Morgan and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1990-02-22 with History categories.

This book is a study of the origins and development of cult practice at Olympia and Delphi. It traces changing patterns of activity through the material record, and challenges many assumptions about the nature and role of the archaeological data. Dr Morgan considers the economics of dedication, technology and the organization of craft production, which provide insights into the behaviour of producers and purchasers of material dedicated at sanctuaries. Her study is exceptional for the emphasis placed upon the two sites in their contemporary local contexts and their changing roles in society. The progression of state formation is discussed through the relationship between changes in dedicatory practice during the eighth century and the changing needs of communities. The book concludes with a detailed study of the wider roles of Olympia and Delphi as two major sanctuaries in Archaic Greece, considering their relationships with other sites and their place in the Greek festival calendar.

In the eighth century B.C. the city-states of Greece were in a constant state of war, until King Iphitus stopped the blood-shed by reviving an ancient tradition-an athletic contest to honor the gods. A truce was declared, so the warring groups could come together in peace to compete at the sacred grove at Olympia. Those games would survive for hundreds of years becoming the inspiration for our modern Olympic Games. The site of Olympia will forever be revered as the birthplace of a great tradition that still unites the world in the spirit of peace and athletic competition. With spectacular illustrations, Olympia revisits those early games-the holy rituals, the chariot racing and equestrian events, the ancient pentathlon, the wrestling, the boxing-all the skills of war that readily developed into the challenge of sport. Dyan Blacklock and David Kennett bring to life the sights, sounds, and excitement of this age-old, sacred tradition.

The Road To Olympia written by André Bernand and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Athletics categories.

The 2004 Olympic Games to be held in Athens will focus attention on the city which was the cradle of western civilisation. In a world paradoxically diminished by technology this ultimate demonstration of human physical abilities will entrance billions of spectators. The Games help us to forget for a short time the existence of so much misery and suffering. The heroic physical feats of the competitors bring universal admiration rare in an often cynical age. For the space of a few days the best athletes from every nation come together in a spirit of brotherhood to compete for the sake of sport; the fanfare saluting the victors drowns out the bugle calls of war; the cheers briefly distract us from brutality and barbarism. The Games invented and organised by the Ancient Greeks teach us important lessons. An Olympic truce suspended hostilities and bloodletting for their duration. A whole idea of what it means to be a man, a whole culture and philosophy, was shaped by these competitions, which testified above all to man's overwhelming ambition, his need to push the limits of his abilities and surpass himself. Drawing on his extensive knowledge of ancient texts and iconography, Professor Bernand makes the case for the festive, brotherly and spectacular side of the competitions, where both physical and mental attributes were equally important to the underlying ideals of beauty and courage. The winner brought honour to himself, his family, his city and to the gods. The Games became a national as well as local institution, developing in an atmosphere of goodwill and joy where only one competitor could hope for glory- the victor.
