Although the so-called "American Scene" movement dominated American art during the second quarter of the twentieth century, it has been largely forgotten today, eclipsed by emergence of abstract expressionism and the development of other avant garde art movements which gained prominence in America by mid-century. Today, however, even as the Depression-era generation fades from the scene, its art lives on. The quality, energy and visual impact of this art is abundantly apparent from even a cursory perusal of the masterworks described and reproduced in this catalogue of a private collection of American representational art of the Thirties and Forties. Painting the American Scene: American Art of the Thirties and Forties offers an extraordinary glimpse into the lives and work of twenty-nine American painters whose art was highly acclaimed and widely exhibited during their lifetimes and for whom proper recognition is long overdue.

Excerpt from American Painting and Its Tradition: As Represented by Inness, Wyant, Martin, Homer, La Farge, Whistler, Chase, Alexander, Sargent The painters about whom these chapters are written helped to make up the period in American painting dating, generally, from about 1878 to, say, 1915. That period has practically closed in the sense that a newer generation with different aims and aspirations has come forward, and the men who broke ground years ago in the Society of American Artists have turned their furrow and had their day. Indeed, those I have chosen to write about herein, with the exception of Sargent, have passed on and passed out. Not only their period but their work has ended. We are now beginning to see them in something like historic perspective. Perhaps, then, the time is opportune for speaking of them as a group and of their influence upon American art. Not all of the one-time new movement originated and died with these nine men. Dozens of painters became identified with American art just after the Centennial, and many of those who came back from Munich and Paris in the late seventies and the early eighties are still living and producing. But while the nine were by no means the whole count they were certainly representative of the movement, and their works speak for almost every phase of it. The value of the movement to American art can be rightly enough judged from them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Antebellum American Pendant Paintings: New Ways of Looking marks the first sustained study of pendant paintings: discrete images designed as a pair. It opens with a broad overview that anchors the form in the medieval diptych, religious history, and aesthetic theory and explores its cultural and historical resonance in the 19th-century United States. Three case studies examine how antebellum American artists used the pendant format in ways revelatory of their historical moment and the aesthetic and cultural developments in which they partook. The case studies on John Quidor’s Rip Van Winkle and His Companions at the Inn Door of Nicholas Vedder (1839) and The Return of Rip Van Winkle (1849) and Thomas Cole’s Departure and Return (1837) shed new light on canonical antebellum American artists and their practices. The chapter on Titian Ramsay Peale’s Kilauea by Day and Kilauea by Night (1842) presents new material that pushes the geographical boundaries of American art studies toward the Pacific Rim. The book contributes to American art history the study of a characteristic but as yet overlooked format and models for the discipline a new and productive framework of analysis focused on the fundamental yet complex way images work back and forth with one another.
