The school choice option of homeschooling has grown rapidly over the past two decades. An estimated 1.77 million K-12 students in the United States (3.4% of the total school-age population) were being homeschooled during the 2011-2012 school year. The purpose of this study was to gather data from homeschooling parents that would contribute to the understanding of parental involvement with school choice and of parental involvement with educational organizations. More specifically, this study determined the proportion of families in the sample (N = 333) who had children enrolled in public or private school before making the decision to homeschool and the proportion who reported homeschooling a child with special educational needs (SEN). Additionally, parents' perceptions about their participation in homeschool support groups and factors important to their decision to homeschool were explored. This quantitative study used descriptive and inferential methodologies. School choice history (whether or not the family had a child in public or private school before making the decision to homeschool) and special educational needs (SEN) status (whether or not the family reported homeschooling a child with SEN) were used as independent variables. Data analysis consisted of an examination of correlations between the independent variables and parents' perceptions of (a) homeschool support group participation, (b) opportunities for parental involvement with the homeschool support group, and (c) factors important to parents' decision to homeschool. The results of the study indicated that 50.8% of participating families had a child who attended public or private school before the family decided to homeschool. In the group of families who had a child who attended public or private before the family decided to homeschool, 60.6% of the families indicated they were currently homeschooling a child with SEN. Overall, the special educational needs of a child was rated as the least important factor in parents' decision to homeschool. However, for families who were currently homeschooling a child with SEN, this factor was significantly more important. The desire to be more involved with their children's education was rated as the most important factor in the decision to homeschool.

Strong partnerships between home and school are essential for coordinating high quality care and education, and for supporting young children's development. This research sought to explore the multidimensional nature of parent-teacher, or cocaring, relationships, for families utilizing full-time, center-based childcare for their infants or toddlers. A model of coparenting, or how parents work together in their roles as parents, served as the main theoretical framework for this investigation. In the first phase of the study, 10 parent-teacher dyads participated in semi-structured interviews about a specific cocaring relationship. In this sample, all families were receiving subsidized childcare. Using an iterative, inductive analysis as well as a deductive analysis based on definitions of key coparenting dimensions, three main cocaring themes were identified: communication, support vs. undermining, and childrearing agreement vs. disagreement. In the second phase, 90 parents of infants and toddlers, about a fourth of whom were receiving subsidized childcare, completed questionnaires about a specific cocaring relationship, their parental involvement, the quality of their relationship with their child, and the child's social and emotional functioning. Exploratory factor analysis of the questionnaire developed to assess the cocaring relationship revealed a three factor structure: Support, Undermining, and Endorsement & Agreement. In regression analyses, after controlling for parents' education, parents' perceptions of cocaring support were positively related to all forms of parental involvement: home-based, school-based, and home-school connections. Parents' perceptions of undermining were also positively related to school-based involvement, whereas perceptions of endorsement & agreement were positively related to home-school connections. In addition, when parents characterized their cocaring relationships as more supportive, or higher in endorsement & agreement, parent-child closeness was higher. However, parents' perception of greater undermining in the cocaring relationship was associated with lower parent-child closeness. Regression analyses also revealed that after controlling for parent-child closeness and conflict, undermining in the cocaring relationship was associated with higher levels of child dysregulation. This research lends validity to the cocaring construct and adds to our understanding of the importance of early parent-teacher relationships for children and families.

Research conducted at schools that have outperformed their counterparts points to specific characteristics that make them successful. These characteristics brought about the development of the effective schools correlates by Ronald Edmonds (1979). Various people from across the United States and in various occupations perceive these correlates differently (Sorenson, Goldsmith, Mendez, & Maxwell, 2011). Effective school research focuses school improvement on the variables that are within the control of educators and have the greatest potential to impact student achievement (Vaughn, Gill, & Sherman, 2009). Research surrounding effective schools concentrates on the seven effective school correlates: (a) clear school mission, (b) high expectations for success, (c) instructional leadership, (d) frequent monitoring of student progress, (e) student time on task and an opportunity to learn, (f) safe and orderly environment, and (g) home-school relations (Berdsell & Sudlow, 1996). In this study, I questioned teachers and parents at elementary schools in rural Virginia using open-ended questions about the perceived effectiveness of schools. The study found that the perceptions of parents and teachers were both similar and different, depending upon their perspective. Five themes emerged from the research a) communication, good home-to-school relationship; (b) parental involvement; (c) high expectations; (d) instructional leadership; and (e) school safety. All five themes correspond with existing correlates of effective schools. This study was intended to help start a dialogue between parents and teachers about the importance of the correlates of effective schools.

This book examines new directions in home-school relations from an international perspective. Unlike other current literature that concentrates on traditional models of family-school partnerships in Western countries, it focuses on the contributions of immigrant and minority parents, especially those in Asia and South America. This book brings together international scholars who explore home-school relations in Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Hong Kong, South Korea, Mongolia, Sweden and the United States.
