An eye-opening guide to the world’s best parenting strategies Research reveals that American kids lag behind in academic achievement, happiness, and wellness. Christine Gross-Loh exposes culturally determined norms we have about “good parenting,” and asks, Are there parenting strategies other countries are getting right that we are not? This book takes us across the globe and examines how parents successfully foster resilience, creativity, independence, and academic excellence in their children. Illuminating the surprising ways in which culture shapes our parenting practices, Gross-Loh offers objective, research-based insight such as: Co-sleeping may promote independence in kids. “Hoverparenting” can damage a child’s resilience. Winner, 2019 Inaugural Outstanding Ethnography Book Award, given by the Ethnography in Education Research Forum The stories of Mexican migrant women who parent from afar, and how their transnational families stay together While we have an incredible amount of statistical information about immigrants coming in and out of the United States, we know very little about how migrant families stay together and raise their children. Beyond the numbers, what are the everyday experiences of families with members on both sides of the border? Focusing on Mexican women who migrate to New York City and leave children behind, Motherhood across Borders examines parenting from afar, as well as the ways in which separated siblings cope with different experiences across borders. Drawing on more than three years of ethnographic research, Gabrielle Oliveira offers a unique focus on the many consequences of maternal migration. Oliveira illuminates the life trajectories of separated siblings, including their divergent educational paths, and the everyday struggles that undocumented mothers go through in order to figure out how to be a good parent to all of their children, no matter where they live. Despite these efforts, the book uncovers the far-reaching effects of maternal migration that influences both the children who accompany their mothers to New York City, and those who remain in Mexico. With more mothers migrating without their children in search of jobs, opportunities, and the hope of creating a better life for their families, Motherhood across Borders is an invaluable resource for scholars, educators, and anyone with an interest in the current dynamics of U.S immigration.

Phenomenal written by Leigh Ann Henion and has been published by Penguin this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-03-24 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Elizabeth Gilbert, author of The Signature of All Things and Eat, Pray, Love “What a cool and fascinating ride. Leigh Ann Henion has tackled one of the great questions of contemporary, intelligent, adventurous women: Is it possible to be a wife and mother and still explore the world? Her answer seems to be that this is not only possible, but essential. This story shows how. I think it will open doors for many.” Heartfelt and awe-inspiring, Leigh Ann Henion’s Phenomenal is a moving tale of physical grandeur and emotional transformation, a journey around the world that ultimately explores the depths of the human heart. A journalist and young mother, Henion combines her own varied experiences as a parent with a panoramic tour of the world’s most extraordinary natural wonders. Phenomenal begins in hardship: with Henion deeply shaken by the birth of her beloved son, shocked at the adversity a young mother faces with a newborn. The lack of sleep, the shrinking social circle, the health difficulties all collide and force Henion to ask hard questions about our accepted wisdom on parenting and the lives of women. Convinced that the greatest key to happiness—both her own and that of her family—lies in periodically venturing into the wider world beyond home, Henion sets out on a global trek to rekindle her sense of wonder. Henion’s quest takes her far afield, but it swiftly teaches her that freedom is its own form of parenting—one that ultimately allows her to meet her son on his own terms with a visceral understanding of the awe he experiences every day at the fresh new world. Whether standing on the still-burning volcanoes of Hawai‘i or in the fearsome lightning storms of Venezuela, amid the vast animal movements of Tanzania or the elegant butterfly migrations of Mexico, Henion relates a world of sublimity and revelation. Henion’s spiritual wanderlust puts her in the path of modern-day shamans, reindeer herders, and astrophysicists. She meets laypeople from all over the world, from all walks of life, going to great lengths to chase migrations, auroras, eclipses, and other phenomena. These seekers trust their instincts, follow their passions, shape their days into the lives they most want to lead. And, somewhere along the way, Leigh Ann Henion becomes one of them. A breathtaking memoir, Phenomenal reveals unforgettable truths about motherhood, spirituality, and the beauty of nature. Oprah.com "Part travel memoir, part parenting manifesto and part inquiry into those 'fleeting, extraordinary glimpses of something that left us groping for rational explanations in the quicksand of all-encompassing wonder.'"

A User S Guide To Neglectful Parenting written by Guy Delisle and has been published by Drawn & Quarterly this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-04-29 with Comics & Graphic Novels categories.

Meditations on fatherhood from the author of Jerusalem: Chronicles from the Holy City With A User’s Guide to Neglectful Parenting, the trademark dry humor that pervades Guy Delisle’s landmark and praised graphic travelogues takes center stage. Quick, light vignettes play on the worries and cares any young parent might have, and offer wry solutions to the petty frustrations of being a dad who works from home. Readers familiar with Delisle’s stranger-in-a-strange-land technique for storytelling (employed in Jerusalem, Pyongyang, Burma Chronicles, and Shenzhen) will recognize the titular parent in this book; Delisle’s travelogues were simultaneously portraits of complex places and times, and portraits of a stay-at-home dad’s ever-changing relationship with his children while his wife is out working for Doctors Without Borders. The relationship between young child and all-too-irony-aware parent is beautifully done here, and Delisle’s loose flowing style has been set free, creating a wonderful sense of motion throughout. A User’s Guide to Neglectful Parenting is an intimate, offbeat look at the joys of parenting. A User's Guide to Neglectful Parenting has been translated from the French by Helge Dascher. Dascher has been translating graphic novels from French and German to English for over twenty years. A contributor to Drawn & Quarterly since the early days, her translations include acclaimed titles such as the Aya series by Marguerite Abouet and Clément Oubrerie, Hostage by Guy Delisle, and Beautiful Darkness by Fabien Vehlmann and Kerascoët. With a background in art history and history, she also translates books and exhibitions for museums in North America and Europe. She lives in Montreal.

Parenting The Long Journey written by Joe Rich and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-03-24 with Family & Relationships categories.

Parenting: The Long Journey stands out in its approach to parenting in that it reinforces the view that parenting is primarily a relationship requiring a particular attitude and a series of skills readily available to parents. In this way it is both instructive and encouraging for parents in their respective day-to-day of parenting their children in a variety of family constellations and real life circumstances. Although good advice for parents may be found in a variety of resources, Parenting: The Long Journey couples solid advice with encouraging words that can lead to an attitude and relationship approach that will last for the many years after the active parenting of children comes to a close and children enter into adulthood. This makes the material widely applicable to parents of every social class, family structure and education level. The book offers guidance on approach in general which applies to a wide variety of parenting issues. The book includes plenty of real life examples and stories. The advice is non-judgmental and its philosophical approaches like "parents are experts on themselves" and "aim for better not perfect" make the book very inviting to those faced with the challenges of parenting in today's world.

Parenting can be the toughest journey a person ever makes. The author transparently addresses the difficult parts of this role while pointing us to some practical ways of thinking and relating with children to lighten the responsibility. This book is as fascinating as Amy Chuas Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother memoir, as relatable as Jen Hatmakers Christian foibles, as uplifting as Iyanla Vanzants inspirational messages, and backed by solid research of the likes of Brene Brown. By deftly combining four of Americas favorite genres into one enjoyable read, the author does not force us to compare and choose one world view over another, but honors all. Kim understands the unique challenges and opportunities that arise when youre parenting in a culture different than the one in which you were raised. Her words are wise and just what you need to figure out what is best for your family! Jill Savage, author of Better Together: Because Youre Not Meant to Mom Alone This is an insightful book, full of sound and practical advice. I highly reccommend it. Dr. Helen Mendes Love, MSW, author of Reflections on the Upsides of Aging Kim gives invaluable insight on the intricacies of parenting in a more globalized and culturally-relevant world, while respecting tradition and heritage. Sam Louie, M.A., LMHC, author of Asian Shame and Addiction: Suffering in Silence Humorous, yet educational, this book is a must read for any parent.
