Are they truly independent organizations or have they been 'colonized' by the big vested interests in health? Are they a signal of a more assertive patient or consumer? Do they actually influence what health care people receive?" "This study will be important reading for scholars, students and professionals and, in particular, for those involved in running patient organizations."--Jacket.

Cannabis written by Lucas Richert and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-08-03 with Political Science categories.

Cannabis consumption, commerce, and control in global history, from the nineteenth century to the present day. This book gathers together authors from the new wave of cannabis histories that has emerged in recent decades. It offers case studies from Africa, Asia, the Americas, Europe, and the Middle East. It does so to trace a global history of the plant and its preparations, arguing that Western colonialism shaped and disseminated ideas in the nineteenth century that came to drive the international control regimes of the twentieth. More recently, the emergence of commercial interests in cannabis has been central to the challenges that have undermined that cannabis consensus. Throughout, the determination of people around the world to consume substances made from the plant has defied efforts to stamp them out and often transformed the politics and cultures of using them. These texts also suggest that globalization might have a cannabis history. The migration of consumers, the clandestine networks established to supply them, and international cooperation on control may have driven much of the interconnectedness that is a key feature of the contemporary world.

Pressure Power And Policy written by Martin John Smith and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1993 with History categories.

Pressure, Power and Policy provides an accessible and comprehensive introduction to new developments in pressure group theory. Traditionally, analysis of pressure groups has been dominated by pluralism, corporatism and Marxism. Martin Smith suggests that, while these approaches provide useful insights into state-group relations, they also have major limitations. He then goes on to outline the concepts of policy networks and state autonomy, and evaluate their contribution to understanding state-group interaction. The book focuses on the interrelationships between groups and the state rather than the activities of interest groups alone. It is also concerned with how policy networks develop and change, and how they affect policy outcomes and the level of state autonomy. The argument these theories provide for a more sophisticated analysis of the policy process is illustrated by case studies taken from a range of policy areas - business, health, agriculture and consumer policy - in both Britain and the United States. The case studies suggest that the types of relationships that exist between groups and government vary not according to the resources of the groups, but according to the way policy is made and the types of policy networks that develop. Pressure, Power and Policy is for students and researchers of political sociology, public policy, comparative politics and British and American Politics.

They have been written by leading health policy researchers in sociology, social policy, management and organisation studies. The collection explores and promotes the case-study as an under-used method and thereby encourages a more reflective approach to policy learning by practitioners and academics. The book will appeal to under-graduates, post-graduates and academics in social policy, public management and health services research.

In the United States, some populations suffer from far greater disparities in health than others. Those disparities are caused not only by fundamental differences in health status across segments of the population, but also because of inequities in factors that impact health status, so-called determinants of health. Only part of an individual's health status depends on his or her behavior and choice; community-wide problems like poverty, unemployment, poor education, inadequate housing, poor public transportation, interpersonal violence, and decaying neighborhoods also contribute to health inequities, as well as the historic and ongoing interplay of structures, policies, and norms that shape lives. When these factors are not optimal in a community, it does not mean they are intractable: such inequities can be mitigated by social policies that can shape health in powerful ways. Communities in Action: Pathways to Health Equity seeks to delineate the causes of and the solutions to health inequities in the United States. This report focuses on what communities can do to promote health equity, what actions are needed by the many and varied stakeholders that are part of communities or support them, as well as the root causes and structural barriers that need to be overcome.
