Having spent over twenty-five years building an impressive portfolio of mental health issues (including Depression, Anxiety, agoraphobia, social anxiety and bipolar disorder) and just as many years trying to find the quick fix for them all, I finally realised that I had been searching for those miracle cures in all of the wrong places. I was in search of a magic pill that would suddenly make all my problems disappear, a quick fix that would make me "normal". I was looking to others to fix me instead of looking at what was going on in my mind. I had spent so many days in bed, utterly convinced that I was going to die. How could all of this be in my mind? Muscular aches and pains. Numbness. Nausea. Vomiting, Tremors. Morbid thoughts and irrational fears. Life was hopeless. I wasn't living; I was merely existing. I was without hope, without ambition, and without an interest in anything at all. Each day was a living nightmare, and I was desperate to turn things around. But I didn't know how to go about it. Had it not been for the love that I had for my children, I think that I would have indeed given up on life. There were many trips to the docs over the years and countless hours of them trying, unsuccessfully, to reassure me that I wasn't dying. But, in the end, I had to accept that I may just happen to be a little crazy. If all of this was in my mind, I must educate myself on how the mind works. If I were to stand a chance at living a meaningful life, then I had to figure out how to change my thoughts about certain things and learn how to let go of, and heal from the painful events of my past. I had to work on changing my perspective. After much research and many initial doubts, I discovered that it is possible to change how we think. Although many mental health issues do not have an absolute cure, we don't have to remain stuck in any place we don't wish to be. We do have a choice to a degree. Most mental health issues and illnesses arise from past traumas. I wholeheartedly believe that if we can face those traumas, we can lessen the severity of our symptoms. It is my hope that the advice and exercises that I have shared here will considerably help you to move forward toward a happier and healthier future.

“There are more than 50 creative prompts for the artist (or artist at heart) to explore. Take the title of this book as affirmation, and get started.” —Fast Company More than 50 assignments, ideas, and prompts to expand your world and help you make outstanding new things to put into it Curator Sarah Urist Green left her office in the basement of an art museum to travel and visit a diverse range of artists, asking them to share prompts that relate to their own ways of working. The result is You Are an Artist, a journey of creation through which you'll invent imaginary friends, sort books, declare a cause, construct a landscape, find your band, and become someone else (or at least try). Your challenge is to filter these assignments through the lens of your own experience and make art that reflects the world as you see it. You don't have to know how to draw well, stretch a canvas, or mix a paint color that perfectly matches that of a mountain stream. This book is for anyone who wants to make art, regardless of experience level. The only materials you'll need are what you already have on hand or can source for free. Full of insights, techniques, and inspiration from art history, this book opens up the processes and practices of artists and proves that you, too, have what it takes to call yourself one. You Are an Artist brings together more than 50 assignments gathered from some of the most innovative creators working today, including Sonya Clark, Michelle Grabner, The Guerrilla Girls, Fritz Haeg, Pablo Helguera, Nina Katchadourian, Toyin Ojih Odutola, J. Morgan Puett, Dread Scott, Alec Soth, Gillian Wearing, and many others.

Why We Work written by Barry Schwartz and has been published by Simon and Schuster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-09-01 with Psychology categories.

An eye-opening, groundbreaking tour of the purpose of work in our lives, showing how work operates in our culture and how you can find your own path to happiness in the workplace. Why do we work? The question seems so simple. But Professor Barry Schwartz proves that the answer is surprising, complex, and urgent. We’ve long been taught that the reason we work is primarily for a paycheck. In fact, we’ve shaped much of the infrastructure of our society to accommodate this belief. Then why are so many people dissatisfied with their work, despite healthy compensation? And why do so many people find immense fulfillment and satisfaction through “menial” jobs? Schwartz explores why so many believe that the goal for working should be to earn money, how we arrived to believe that paying workers more leads to better work, and why this has made our society confused, unhappy, and has established a dangerously misguided system. Through fascinating studies and compelling anecdotes, this book dispels this myth. Schwartz takes us through hospitals and hair salons, auto plants and boardrooms, showing workers in all walks of life, showcasing the trends and patterns that lead to happiness in the workplace. Ultimately, Schwartz proves that the root of what drives us to do good work can rarely be incentivized, and that the cause of bad work is often an attempt to do just that. How did we get to this tangled place? How do we change the way we work? With great insight and wisdom, Schwartz shows us how to take our first steps toward understanding, and empowering us all to find great work.
