In any society, communicative activities are organized into models of conduct that differentiate specific social practices from each other and enable people to communicate with each other in ways distinctive to those practices. The articles in this volume investigate a series of locale-specific models of communicative conduct, or registers of communication, through which persons organize their participation in varied social practices, including practices of politics, religion, schooling, migration, trade, media, verbal art, and ceremonial ritual. Drawing on research traditions on both sides of the Atlantic, the authors of these articles bring together insights from a variety of scholarly disciplines, including linguistics, anthropology, folklore, literary studies, and philology. Laurits Christian Nielsen (1871-1930) var en dansk forfatter, digter og redaktør. Han debuterede som forfatter i 1897 med digtsamlingen "Tre Mænd (Judas, Kain, Spartacus)" og udgav en lang række digtsamlinger og fortællinger i løbet af sit liv. L.C. Nielsen arbejdede på flere forskellige dagblade, men havde svært ved at holde ansættelse længere tid ad gangen. Hans liv var præget af uro, omskiftelige omstændigheder og dårligt helbred. Han døde i 1930 af en hjerneblødning under et rekonvalescensophold i Rom.

The ascendency of executive power in the presence of weak parliamentary and societal control has given rise to a need for deliberative forms of diplomacy in international relations. As Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden regularly include members of parliament, party representatives, and representatives of civil society in their delegations to the General Assembly of the United Nations, does this imply that a Nordic model exists? This book reviews the practice of these countries and finds that the role of societal representatives has diminished from participating members of delegations to mere observers.
