Op de drie Nederlands-Caraïbische eilanden, Aruba, Bonaire en Curaçao, wordt een eigen creoolse taal gesproken, het Papiamentu (of Papiamento). Sinds de jaren rond de afschaffing van de slavernij, in 1863, worden ook de eerste teksten in deze taal gepubliceerd. Daartoe behoren verhalen, romans, gedichten, essays, pamfletten, liederen, dialogen en toneelteksten, die met weidse uitleg als 'literatuur' werden of worden aangeduid. Hierin staat centraal hoe de bewoners van de eilanden naar zichzelf, elkaar, hun belaste verleden en naar buitenstaanders uit de westerse wereld keken en kijken. Deze teksten zijn daarmee een weerspiegeling van de sentimenten en ideologieën in de eilandsamenlevingen van Aruba, Bonaire en Curaçao. De aanvankelijke waardering voor de westerse, blanke beschaving verandert langzaam in scherpe kritiek op en verzet tegen de invloed van die wereld op de eilanden. De etnische lading hiervan heeft de laatste honderd jaar naar binnen en buiten tot heftige tegenstellingen geleid. In deze conflicten hebben Nederland en het Nederlands een wisselende rol gespeeld. Deze geschiedschrijving en de anthologie tonen beide ruimschoots al deze ontwikkelingen, vooral ook door de ruime keuze uit teksten van Pierre Lauffer, Elis Juliana, Nydia Ecury, Cola Debrot, Henry Habibe, Carel de Haseth, May Henriquez, Frank Martinus Arion, Luis H. Daal, Ernesto Rosenstand, Jules de Palm en Tip Marugg. Hiermee wordt voor het eerst deze gedachtewereld toegankelijk gemaakt voor een Nederlands publiek. Al deze auteurs kijken heel verschillend naar hun eiland, maar allen hebben een uitgesproken beeld van, in overdrachtelijke zin, 'de kleur van mijn eiland'. Medische geschiedschrijving over de Nederlandse koloniën is schaars. Genezers op de koloniale markt voorziet in een lacune en werpt een nieuw licht op zowel de Europese als de inheemse gezondheidszorg en haar beoefenaars in de periode 1850-1915. In 1851 richtte de koloniale regering in Batavia twee opleidingen op: een doktersschool voor Javaanse jongens en een vroedvrouwenschool voor Javaanse meisjes. De bedoeling was dat zij de traditionele inheemse geneeskundigen, de doekoens, zouden gaan vervangen. De inheemse bevolking was echter niet bereid gebruik te maken van de diensten van de afgestudeerden. De inheemse dokters bleken toch inzetbaar als vaccinateur en als hulpgeneesheer. De vroedvrouwenschool werd daarentegen in 1875 gesloten. Ondanks allerlei gruwelverhalen over misstanden in het inheemse kraambed werd de school niet heropend. Wel werden er mondjesmaat meisjes aan huis opgeleid door Nederlandse artsen. Toen de koloniale politiek rond 1900 aandacht begon te krijgen voor het welzijn van de inheemse bevolking, ontstond behoefte aan artsen. Meer inheemse jongemannen kregen een betere medische opleiding en gingen als zelfstandige artsen werken. Deze verandering leverde spanningen op: lang niet iedereen accepteerde inheemse artsen als collega's van een Nederlandse arts.

An image in technicolor. Fifty years of wars in Vietnam 1940-1990 gives a broad and innovative interpretation of the history of Vietnam between 1940 and 1990. Black and white characterisations, one-sided interpretations and prevailing myths are debunked. Instead, a nuanced and multifaceted picture is given in which the United States is less prominent. History is not only written by the victors and, in this case too, the history of Vietnam during this period cannot be attributed solely to Ho Chi Minh and the success of the Communists in 1975. The internal losers, that is, the other political movements and their leaders, must also be given a crucial place in Vietnam’s history. For example, the civil wars that took place between 1940 and 1990 played an unmistakable role. The older, idealised image of North Vietnam is inaccurate. This country was a dictatorial and oppressive police state. After 1954, the North Vietnamese leaders were embroiled in a fierce power struggle and were largely responsible for the war in South Vietnam. The answer to the question of who the legitimate representatives of the Vietnamese nation were also requires a more balanced judgment of non-Communist politicians, such as Bao Dai, Ngo Dinh Diem and Nguyen Van Thieu. As for the role of international players, initially, it was the Cold War that determined the United States' interference; later, it was American credibility. In the end, it was the support from China and the Soviet Union that was the deciding factor for North Vietnam’s victory. Important new perspectives are given on the role of minorities, the meaning of ‘a third way’, the devastating effects of the strategy, the role of women and girls, and the mental and cultural aspects of the wars.
