Developmental Education is an approach to education in school that aims at promoting children’s cultural development and their abilities to participate autonomously and well-informed in the cultural practices of their community. From the point of view of Cultural-historical Activity theory (CHAT), a play-based curriculum has been developed over the past decades for primary school, which presents activity contexts for pupils in the classroom that create learning and teaching opportunities for helping pupils with appropriating cultural knowledge, skills, and moral understandings in meaningful ways. The approach is implemented in numerous Dutch primary schools classrooms with the explicit intention to support the learning of both pupils and teachers. The book focuses especially on education of young children (4 – 8 years old) in primary school and presents the underpinning concepts of this approach, and chapters on examples of good practices in a variety of subject matter areas, such as literacy (vocabulary acquisition, reading, writing), mathematics, and arts. Successful implementation of Developmental Education in the classroom strongly depends on dynamic assessment and continuous observations of young pupils’ development. Strategies for implementation of both the teaching practices and assessment strategies are discussed in detail in the book.

The Cinderella story is retold continuously in literature, illustration, music, theatre, ballet, opera, film, and other media, and folklorists have recognized hundreds of distinct forms of Cinderella plots worldwide. The focus of this volume, however, is neither Cinderella as an item of folklore nor its alleged universal meaning. In Cinderella across Cultures, editors Martine Hennard Dutheil de la Rochère, Gillian Lathey, and Monika Wozniak analyze the Cinderella tale as a fascinating, multilayered, and ever-changing story constantly reinvented in different media and traditions. The collection highlights the tale’s reception and adaptation in cultural and national contexts across the globe, including those of Italy, France, Germany, Britain, the Netherlands, Poland, and Russia. Contributors shed new light on classic versions of Cinderella by examining the material contexts that shaped them (such as the development of glass artifacts and print techniques), or by analyzing their reception in popular culture (through cheap print and mass media). The first section, “Contextualizing Cinderella,” investigates the historical and cultural contexts of literary versions of the tale and their diachronic transformations. The second section, “Regendering Cinderella,” tackles innovative and daring literary rewritings of the tale in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, in particular modern feminist and queer takes on the classic plot. Finally, the third section, “Visualising Cinderella,” concerns symbolic transformations of the tale, especially the interaction between text and image and the renewal of the tale’s iconographic tradition. The volume offers an invaluable contribution to the study of this particular tale and also to fairy-tale studies overall. Gedurende een jaar namen leerlingen deel aan een speciaal ontwikkeld programma, en gingen zij met literatuur aan de slag. De leerlingen lazen verschillende boeken, noteerden thuis op post-its hun eerste gedachten, schreven recensies en dagboekfragmenten, en gingen in leesgroepen over de boeken in gesprek. Praten over boeken is een waardevolle toevoeging aan het curriculum, zo wijst deze studie uit. In verschillende dimensies van literaire competentie maakten de onderzochte leerlingen groei door. Leerlingen gingen in de loop van het onderzoekstraject meer en meer gevarieerde vragen stellen. In alle klassen steeg het aantal verdiepingsvragen; leerlingen luisterden naar elkaar en reageerden op elkaar. Vooral op het gebied van het beargumenteerd formuleren van belevingen en interpretaties ging de literaire competentie vooruit. Maar als je erover nadenkt… biedt nieuwe inzichten in de ontwikkeling van literaire competentie, en draagt daarnaast praktische handvatten aan voor het voeren van literaire gesprekken in de klas. De studie daagt uit om het huidige lees- en literatuuronderwijs tegen het licht te houden. Want een lezer worden, dat doe je het beste samen.
