Cognitive Rehabilitation In Old Age written by Robert D. Hill and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000-04-13 with Medical categories.

Cognitive deficits are part of the normal aging process and are exacerbated by various diseases that affect adults in old age, such as dementia, depression, and stroke. A significant scientific and social effort has been expended to evaluate whether cognitive deficits can be remedied through systematic interventions. The editors, as well as the chapter authors, represent a variety of viewpoints that span theory as well as practice. Overall, they aim to address concepts in cognitive rehabilitation that are useful in intervention research -- research which examines problems and issues in normal and pathological aging -- and focusing on the application of cognitive training strategies in natural settings. Thus, the book is grounded in contemporary theory in cognitive aging and is applicable to both the practicing clinician as well as the researcher. It is organized into four sections. The first highlights prominent theoretical principles; the second looks at cognitive rehabilitation strategies in normal aging; the third examines the interplay between lifestyle patterns and cognitive function through applying a broad definition of lifestyle choices; and the fourth focuses on rehabilitation strategies that address issues in pathological (or diseased) aging.

Clear and compact guidance on integrating mindfulness into practice This clear and concise book provides practical, evidence-based guidance on the use of mindfulness in treatment: its mechanism of action, the disorders for which there is empirical evidence of efficacy, mindfulness practices and techniques, and how to integrate them into clinical practice. Leading experts describe the concepts and roots of mindfulness, and examine the science that has led to this extraordinarily rich and ancient practice becoming a foundation to many contemporary, evidenced-based approaches in psychotherapy. The efficacy of mindfulness-based interventions in conditions as diverse as borderline personality disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, alcohol and substance use, emotional dysregulation, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, chronic stress, eating disorders, and other medical conditions including type 2 diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis is also described. The book is invaluable reading for all those curious about the current science around mindfulness and about how and when to incorporate it effectively into clinical practice.

Evidence Based Dementia Practice written by Nawab Qizilbash and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-04-15 with Medical categories.

The era of therapeutic nihilism in dementia has ended, with the emergence of agents for symptomatic treatment, those that delay the course of the disease or prevent the onset of dementia, and new methods to manage symptoms. With the expansion of therapies, there is a clear danger of being overwhelmed by the volume of data. This book is designed to collect this information, distil what is relevant and reliable, and present it in a format that is useful to clinicians who manage and treat people with dementia. The book is designed to bring together the latest, best and practical evidence on all aspects of management, from diagnosis and therapy to social and ethical considerations. The editors are all dynamic clinicians involved in the care of patients with dementia and the evaluation of therapies. Two of the editors are the leaders of the Cochrane Collaboration for the examination of therapies for dementia. There are no other books that take such a practical and problem-oriented or approach to the diagnosis and management of dementia. Furthermore none but this can be described as truely evidence-based.

Rehabilitation Of Memory written by Barbara A. Wilson and has been published by Guilford Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1988-08-26 with Psychology categories.

For centuries scholars have studied memory: its powers, its potential, and its variability. It is only recently, however, that efforts have been made to find practical methods of helping people who have severe memory disorders. In this relatively new, and as yet undeveloped field, REHABILITATION OF MEMORY offers important information and guidelines to those interested and involved in memory therapy. Dr. Barbara Wilson makes no hasty claims about restoration of lost memory functioning, nor does she claim to retrain memory. Recognizing that such unreal promises can only frustrate patients and disappoint their families, she instead focuses on what specific items such patients can learn, how best they can learn, and how to assess the effectiveness of their learning. An essential aspect of this work is that the information gained will prove useful to patients in their daily lives and will enhance their chances of coping with real life situations. The approach, while being well informed by theory, remains a practical one with relevance to the everyday lives of people with memory disorders. Influenced by the three major disciplines of cognitive psychology, neuropsychology, and behavioral psychology, Wilson draws from each to inform her work with those who are impeded by organic memory disorders. The therapy she describes is structured upon frameworks that are themselves built upon unique and ingenious combinations of theories from all three of these disciplines. Using this multi-discipline approach, she also demonstrates how to assess memory problems for rehabilitation and produce a comprehensive plan of action. Reflecting an overall concern for the individuals in treatment, an essential ingredient of this approach is the implementation of rigorous research designs to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment. Relevant to a variety of professions, clinical psychologists, educational psychologists, and neuropsychologists working with the memory impaired will gain an understanding of various techniques that can be employed to help their patients. Occupational and speech therapists will learn practical measures to help with their patient's specific memory problems and academic psychologists will appreciate the theoretical support that has been advanced by Dr. Wilson in her search for effective treatment programs.
