Unsterblich in seinem verlegerischen Eifer wurde der französische Arzt Gustave Le Bon (1841-1931) durch ein Buch „Die Psychologie der Massen“ – Siegmund Freud und Max Weber zählten zu seinen Bewunderern. Aber auch Hitler und Göbbels sollen sich hier ihre Blaupausen zur Manipulation der Massen verschafft haben. Le Bon kämpft mit den Waffen der Freiheit: Aufklärung und Intellekt - gegen die Barbarei der Masse, die, einmal auf den Weg gebracht, nichts aufhalten kann. Er beklagt den „außerordentlichen geistigen Tiefstand der Massen“, ihre Triebhaftigkeit, ihren Hass, ihre Wankelmütigkeit, ihre Manipulierbarkeit. Die Politik als Theater, als Schauspiel, als emotionale Inszenierung war Le Bon zuwider. Als radikaler Demokrat, liberaler Freigeist, als Mensch der Vernunft musste Le Bon an den Auswüchsen der Jahrhundertwende 19/20 verzweifeln: Kriege, Massenpsychosen, Aberglauben, Rassenwahn allenthalben. Prophetisch waren seine (nun über 100 Jahre alten) Worte zu den Massenmedien: „... Welches Blatt wäre heute reich genug, seinen Schriftleitern eigne Meinungen gestatten zu können? Und welches Gewicht könnten diese Meinungen bei Lesern haben, die nur unterrichtet oder unterhalten werden wollen und hinter jeder Empfehlung Berechnung wittern?...“ – Hört man daraus nicht das „Lügenpresse“-Grölen in Dresden? Kein Buch zur politischen Welt war jemals so zeitlos. Die Schar der Menschenschlächter umfasste ungefähr dreihundert Mitglieder und zeigte vollkommen die Grundform einer ungleichartigen Masse. Abgesehen von einer ganz geringen Anzahl gewerbsmäßiger Bettler, bestand sie namentlich aus Händlern und Handwerkern aller Art, aus Schustern, Schlossern, Perückenmachern, Maurern, Angestellten, Dienstmännern usw. Unter dem Einfluss der empfangenen Suggestion sind sie, wie der obenerwähnte Koch, völlig überzeugt davon, eine vaterländische Pflicht zu erfüllen. In the book, Le Bon claims that there are several characteristics of crowd psychology: "impulsiveness, irritability, incapacity to reason, the absence of judgement of the critical spirit, the exaggeration of sentiments, and others. Le Bon claimed that "an individual immersed for some length of time in a crowd soon finds himself - either in consequence of magnetic influence given out by the crowd or from some other cause of which we are ignorant - in a special state, which much resembles the state of fascination in which the hypnotized individual finds himself in the hands of the hypnotizer.
