Zhuang Zi is not unknown in the West, but his work is not appreciated nor understood as well as it deserves to be. Perhaps that is not surprising given that his work originates from the Warring States period of ancient China (475–221 bce). Of course, his ideas are sometimes quite abstruse and not as accessible as those of Plato; nor are they suited to the Western preference for linear methods of exposition. But Zhuang Zi does reveal a remarkably sophisticated philosophical outlook; a gentle, if sometimes, provocative humour; and, incidentally, displays and affirms our common humanity despite the passage of over two thousand years. Zhuang Zi writes mainly using allegory and example. The Western preference is for complex clarity; even if, it would appear, that assumed clarity is deceptive. This new translation was undertaken because it was felt that earlier translations were not very sympathetic to Zhuang Zi’s Daoism and his latent anarchism; and they tended to smother the former in theistic concepts whilst obscuring the latter as much as they could. It is felt that this new translation brings a greater clarity to a significant number of passages. Despite any failings in this translation and interpretation, it is hoped that it will serve to introduce new readers to that remarkable Chinese classic and perhaps stimulate those already familiar with it to re-appraise certain aspects of it.

Case studies fascinate because they link individual instances to general patterns and knowledge to action without denying the priority of individual situations over the generalizations derived from them. In this volume, an international group of senior scholars comes together to consider the use of cases to produce empirical knowledge in premodern China. They trace the process by which the project of thinking with cases acquired a systematic and public character in the ninth century CE and after. Premodern Chinese experts on medicine and law circulated printed case collections to demonstrate efficacy or claim validity for their judgments. They were joined by authors of religious and philosophical texts. The rhetorical strategies and forms of argument used by all of these writers were allied with historical narratives, exemplary biographies, and case examples composed as aids to imperial statecraft. The innovative and productive explorations gathered here present a coherent set of interlocking arguments that will be of interest to comparativists as well as specialists on premodern East Asia. For China scholars, they examine the interaction of different fields of learning in the late imperial period, the relationship of evidential reasoning and literary forms, and the philosophical frameworks that linked knowledge to experience and action. This third volume of Princeton Readings in Religions demonstrates that the "three religions" of China--Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism (with a fourth, folk religion, sometimes added)--are not mutually exclusive: they overlap and interact with each other in a rich variety of ways. The volume also illustrates some of the many interactions between Han culture and the cultures designated by the current government as "minorities." Selections from minority cultures here, for instance, are the folktale of Ny Dan the Manchu Shamaness and a funeral chant of the Yi nationality collected by local researchers in the early 1980s. Each of the forty unusual selections, from ancient oracle bones to stirring accounts of mystic visions, is preceded by a substantial introduction. As with the other volumes, most of the selections here have never been translated before. Stephen Teiser provides a general introduction in which the major themes and categories of the religions of China are analyzed. The book represents an attempt to move from one conception of the "Chinese spirit" to a picture of many spirits, including a Laozi who acquires magical powers and eventually ascends to heaven in broad daylight; the white-robed Guanyin, one of the most beloved Buddhist deities in China; and the burning-mouth hungry ghost. The book concludes with a section on "earthly conduct."
