I had ample opportunity to ask Dad these questions when he was alive, But it seemed that a million reasons not to do so could always be found. It was a waste of everything Dad had ever seen, done, and thought about not to hear his answers, and I regret not finding out more about him when I had the chance. Questions for My Father was borne of that regret and has one underlying objective: to develop a blueprint for discovery so that children of any age can start to build a clearer, deeper picture of the man behind the word . -- Vincent Staniforth

228 questions to ask your father, an excellent gift for Father's Day, or his birthday, or his anniversary, or just because you want to know his thoughts and memories. This collection of questions will give your father the chance to reflect on his life, to replay memories of good times and proud moments, and the end result is a book for you, written by your father with his own hand. You will learn his deeply held beliefs as he answers tough questions like: Is there a God? Is there a heaven? Where is hell? Is it okay to lie? Do you believe that men and women are equal? If you could change one thing about the past, what would you do differently? Have you ever been drunk? Have you ever been high? You will learn about the simple pleasures in your father's life, like whether he prefers shorts or pants, a recliner or a couch, boxers or briefs, beans or rice, credit card or cash, news or sports. You will learn about you as he reflects on raising you with questions like: Do you remember the first time that you held me? Were you there when I was born? Were you there when I took my first steps? What were my first words? Who was my first best friend? How did I learn to swim? Do you remember my first day of school? Was I an angry child? You will learn a lot about his childhood as he ponders: Were you ever left at home alone by your parents? Did you ever babysit other people's kids? What chores did you have as a kid? Have you ever gotten lost as a kid? Tell me about your father. Describe a fun place you played as a kid. You will learn a lot about your mother too as he remembers those early years of dating and all that followed: Tell me about your first kiss? How did you propose to Mom? Have you ever bought jewelry for Mom? Was Mom your first love? This is a book of questions. The answers will come from your father as he takes a few weeks to think about his life and what really matters. There is a secret though, and I will tell you here, but you must promise not to mention it if you buy this book and give it to your Dad. A few years ago, on a bright Christmas morning in East Texas, I gave my mother a book like this and asked her to return it to me on the next Christmas. A year came and went for both of us, business and work and so many days, and I forgot about it. Christmas morning arrived and I opened my presents and took lotsa photos of everyone laughing and smiling and enjoying our day, my little nephews eager to play with their toys and me drinking hot chocolate. As I walked back down the hall, guess what I saw sitting on my bed, in the guest bedroom, wrapped, square, bookish, with my name on it. Yes, it was her thoughts on important questions, her memories of life and fun and struggles and successes. I've had almost fifty Christmases and an equal number of birthdays, but this gift was by far the best gift ever, mine to her and hers to me. Since then, she has moved away to a heavenly locale, and I can no longer ask her what she thinks, but I have a book, her book, in her writing, for me. I am glad that I made that purchase and gave it to her, when she was here. Just remember that. There will come a time when you won't be able to do this. Don't procrastinate. Your father won't live forever.

What do we wish most for our children? Next to being healthy, we want them to be happy, of course! Fortunately, a wide array of scientific studies show that happiness is a learned behavior, a muscle we can help our children build and maintain. Drawing on what psychology, sociology, and neuroscience have proven about confidence, gratefulness, and optimism, and using her own chaotic and often hilarious real-world adventures as a mom to demonstrate do’s and don’ts in action, Christine Carter, Ph.D, executive director of UC Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center, boils the process down to 10 simple happiness-inducing steps. With great wit, wisdom, and compassion, Carter covers the day-to-day pressure points of parenting—how best to discipline, get kids to school and activities on time, and get dinner on the table—as well as the more elusive issues of helping children build healthy friendships and develop emotional intelligence. In these 10 key steps, she helps you interact confidently and consistently with your kids to foster the skills, habits, and mindsets that will set the stage for positive emotions now and into their adolescence and beyond. Inside you will discover • the best way avoid raising a brat—changing bad habits into good ones • tips on how to change your kids’ attitude into gratitude • the trap of trying to be perfect—and how to stay clear of its pitfalls • the right way to praise kids—and why too much of the wrong kind can be just as bad as not enough • the spirit of kindness—how to raise kind, compassionate, and loving children • strategies for inspiring kids to do boring (but necessary) tasks—and become more self-motivated in the process Complete with a series of “try this” tips, secrets, and strategies, Raising Happiness is a one-of-a-kind resource that will help you instill joy in your kids—and, in the process, become more joyful yourself.

Imagine being sixty-five and having already lived a full life (school, family, career, travel, hobbies, and adventures). Retired and living the good life, on one seemingly ordinary day your entire world suddenly changes when you discover you have a thirty-four-year-old son whom you knew nothing about. That is what actually happened to me, and here is the true story. A young man, raised solely by a loving mother, spent thirty-four years wondering about his biological father but never expected to actually get answers to his questions. Then one day, through the marvels of DNA technology, he unexpectedly discovered the identity of his father. And he got to ask his questions, and he got them answered. In such a situation, what questions would you ask? This book details the exact questions that he did ask during our first week of discovery, along with my verbatim written responses to him. After that first week, we settled into a slower pace of discovery. Over time, I answered many more questions, using each question as an opportunity to tell him a bit more about my life-who I am and what I have experienced. I hope you find it all as amazing and fascinating as we did.

In 1916, with the Great War reducing northern Europe to a treeless, shattered void, a boy was born to the prosperous director of a pharmaceutical firm in Zurich. He was named Werner. It was not an auspicious time to be born and, indeed, his mother died soon after. As a child, young Werner sought order in his life by dissecting snails and photographing, in the limpid light of his creation, the elegant whorls revealed. He did not become the physical training instructor his father wanted him to be. He did not become the painter he had once wanted to be in Paris in 1939, on the brink of another devastating conflict. He became Werner Bischof, the man, and a photographer of incalculable artistry who found in both order and the chaos he confronted and experienced a sublime beauty, a humanity that was singularly his own. His photographs of a post-war Europe in poverty and despair expressed infinite hope for the human condtion, yet he was only 29. Less than 10 years later he was dead, leaving behind among his last photographs that of a Peruvian child playing his flute on the edge of a ravine. It is now an iconic photograph with a fatal allure. Bischof himself died when his jeep plunged over a ravine in the Andes on a quest for the faces, the lives, of harmony there. Fifty years later his son Marco has gathered together 70 previously unpublished photographs by Werner Bischof. They powerfully reiterate the man his father was, the nature of his humanity and his search for a benign and beautiful cognisance of the brief and terrifying world he lived in.

I have developed the questions in this book to draw out the stories and memories of your father's life. - There are three easy ways to interview a loved one. You can write your father's answers to the questions in this book into the spaces provided. You can use recording equipment or the voice recorder app on your phone, to create a series of audio files. Or, you can give this book to your father to fill in. - Interviews can take place in person, over the phone, or via programs like Skype and Facebook. They can be done in special sessions or combined with outings and family events. I found a mixture of methods worked best. Visits became much more interesting when combined with the questions from this book. - I've tested and refined these questions on my father and other family members. Initially my main goal was to archive some family history, but I gained so much more than that. Long buried stories rose to the surface which gave me insights into my father's life. Learning about my father's past helped me understand the man that raised me and the person he is today. Often only one or two questions were needed for him to start talking freely about the past. When other family members were around, we all got talking. - My connection to my father deepened as I worked on his history, and that is my wish for you too. - Unless someone archives the details of your father's life, they will be lost to future generations. Unfortunately, everyone's memory suffers as we age, so time spent now, will be invaluable later. For more books by Chris Fairweather click on the author's name at the top of the page.

Father Figure written by Jordan Shapiro and has been published by Little, Brown Spark this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-05-11 with Family & Relationships categories.

A thoughtful and "utterly mind-blowing" exploration of fatherhood and masculinity in the 21st century (New York Times). There are hundreds of books on parenting, and with good reason—becoming a parent is scary, difficult, and life-changing. But when it comes to books about parenting identity, rather than the nuts and bolts of raising children, nearly all are about what it's like to be a mother. Drawing on research in sociology, economics, philosophy, gender studies, and the author's own experiences, Father Figure sets out to fill that gap. It's an exploration of the psychology of fatherhood from an archetypal perspective as well as a cultural history that challenges familiar assumptions about the origins of so-called traditional parenting roles. What paradoxes and contradictions are inherent in our common understanding of dads? Might it be time to rethink some aspects of fatherhood? Gender norms are changing, and old economic models are facing disruption. As a result, parenthood and family life are undergoing an existential transformation. And yet, the narratives and images of dads available to us are wholly inadequate for this transition. Victorian and Industrial Age tropes about fathers not only dominate the media, but also contour most people's lived experience. Father Figure offers a badly needed update to our collective understanding of fatherhood—and masculinity in general. It teaches dads how to embrace the joys of fathering while guiding them toward an image of manliness for the modern world.
