ABOUT THE BOOK The first time I saw a news report about Barack Obama was well before he became the first black President of the United States of America. And, in this book, Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance, Obama takes the reader back to those not-too-distant days when the world was completely different. Despite his obvious agreeable qualities, I was one of those people who did not believe Obama would become the Democratic Party’s nomination for president. And I certainly did not believe he could be president. Not once did I imagine that so many millions of Americans—regardless of race or creed—were, to paraphrase Obama himself, ready to vote for a “divided soul, the ghostly image of the tragic mulatto trapped between two worlds to be their president”. But they did. And the rest, as they say, is black and white history. MEET THE AUTHOR Abdul Montaqim is a journalist, based in London, and has been working in the media since 1989. Among the more well known titles he has written for are The Guardian newspaper, Time Out magazine and the International Business Times website. He has edited a number of local and community newspapers, magazines and websites, and has, over the course of his career, worked for some of the largest publishers in Europe, including Emap, LLP and Mirror Group Newspapers. Abdul has also worked outside of the United Kingdom, moving to Abu Dhabi for a year to work on the first national daily newspaper in United Arab Emirates, The National; and he has consulted for media companies in Bangladesh, where he was born. Abdul briefly worked for a New York-headquartered cable television channel called AsiaNet as a news editor, and realised that although he loves researching, writing and other "technical" parts of a journalist's job, he does not like presenting, preferring to be behind the camera or back in the studio. He also realised that, although reporting a story through the medium of television is obviously different from telling it through a newspaper or magazine, the heart and mind of every media company is researching and writing. In his spare time, Abdul likes to spend time with his family, cooking, eating, watching films, listening to music, reading and writing. When he goes out he likes to watch movies at the best cinemas, see live music performances, and eat at good restaurants. He also loves gardening, fishing and going for long walks. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance is Barack Obama’s ode to his early life, which was varied and exotic, to say the least, and would have been challenging for any child. He made the decision to write the book after receiving an advance from a publisher some time after he had been elected president of the Harvard Law Review, the first African American to hold the position. Dreams from My Father was first published in 1995 in the style of a memoir, and marked the initial expression of the young Democrat’s political ambition. Obama was aged only 34 at the time, and was gaining a reputation as a community activist, a civil rights lawyer and a university lecturer. And in 2004, after almost a decade of considerable political success and in the run-up to being voted the Senator for Illinois, Obama decided to re-publish the book for a second time. In his introduction, he said he originally wrote the book “with the belief that the story of my family, and my efforts to understand that story, might speak in some way to the fissures of race that have characterized the American experience, as well as the fluid state of identity—the leaps through time, the collision of cultures—that mark our modern life.” Buy a copy to keep reading!

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • ONE OF ESSENCE’S 50 MOST IMPACTFUL BLACK BOOKS OF THE PAST 50 YEARS In this iconic memoir of his early days, Barack Obama “guides us straight to the intersection of the most serious questions of identity, class, and race” (The Washington Post Book World). “Quite extraordinary.”—Toni Morrison In this lyrical, unsentimental, and compelling memoir, the son of a black African father and a white American mother searches for a workable meaning to his life as a black American. It begins in New York, where Barack Obama learns that his father—a figure he knows more as a myth than as a man—has been killed in a car accident. This sudden death inspires an emotional odyssey—first to a small town in Kansas, from which he retraces the migration of his mother’s family to Hawaii, and then to Kenya, where he meets the African side of his family, confronts the bitter truth of his father’s life, and at last reconciles his divided inheritance. Praise for Dreams from My Father “Beautifully crafted . . . moving and candid . . . This book belongs on the shelf beside works like James McBride’s The Color of Water and Gregory Howard Williams’s Life on the Color Line as a tale of living astride America’s racial categories.”—Scott Turow “Provocative . . . Persuasively describes the phenomenon of belonging to two different worlds, and thus belonging to neither.”—The New York Times Book Review “Obama’s writing is incisive yet forgiving. This is a book worth savoring.”—Alex Kotlowitz, author of There Are No Children Here “One of the most powerful books of self-discovery I’ve ever read, all the more so for its illuminating insights into the problems not only of race, class, and color, but of culture and ethnicity. It is also beautifully written, skillfully layered, and paced like a good novel.”—Charlayne Hunter-Gault, author of In My Place “Dreams from My Father is an exquisite, sensitive study of this wonderful young author’s journey into adulthood, his search for community and his place in it, his quest for an understanding of his roots, and his discovery of the poetry of human life. Perceptive and wise, this book will tell you something about yourself whether you are black or white.”—Marian Wright Edelman

Now adapted for young adults—the #1 New York Times bestselling memoir, which Toni Morrison called “quite extraordinary,” offers an intimate look at Barack Obama’s early days. This is a compelling journey tracing the future 44th president's odyssey through family, race, and identity. A revealing portrait of a young Black man asking questions about self-discovery and belonging—long before he became one of the most important voices in America. This unique edition includes a new introduction from the author, full-color photo insert, and family tree. The son of a white American mother and a Black Kenyan father, Obama was born in Hawaii, where he lived until he was six years old, when he moved with his mother and stepfather to Indonesia. At twelve, he returned to Hawaii to live with his grandparents. Obama brings readers along as he faces the challenges of high school and college, living in New York, becoming a community organizer in Chicago, and traveling to Kenya. Through these experiences, he forms an enduring commitment to leadership and justice. Told through the lens of his relationships with his family—the mother and grandparents who raised him, the father he knows more as a myth than as a man, and the extended family in Kenya he meets for the first time—Obama confronts the complicated truth of his father’s life and legacy and comes to embrace his divided heritage. On his journey to adulthood from a humble background, he forges his own path through trial and error while staying connected to his roots. Barack Obama is determined to lead a life of purpose, service, and authenticity. This powerful memoir will inspire readers to examine both where they come from and where they are capable of going.

ABOUT THE BOOK The recent 60 Minutes interview with President Barack Obama impressed upon me the importance of looking at politics from all angles. In this current election year, many tend to think it’s necessary to choose a side and despise everything that comes from the other side. Even members of Congress take this attitude. In reality, however, both sides in the political arena have the capability of creating legislation that makes sense. Taking the best of both worlds is the best approach. The most important action we can take to improve the current economic situation is to listen and be objective. In his interview, President Obama said, "It is my vision for this country to put forth an economic package that will benefit the majority of Americans." Whether or not you agree with his approach, his ideas deserve consideration and respect. MEET THE AUTHOR The Hyperink Team works hard to bring you high-quality, engaging, fun content. If ever you have any questions about our products, or suggestions for how we can make them better, please don't hesitate to contact us! Happy reading! EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Kroft interview with Obama is called "President Obama: The economy, the congress, the future," an apt title for this important pre-election discussion. Kroft begins by asking the President what he thinks of new polls that state that 75 percent of Americans think he is not doing a good job. Obama replies by saying he would be surprised if Americans felt satisfied, since there is a lot more work to be done. He explains that he is working toward an economy that benefits everyone, not just a few. This initial back and forth sets the tone for the interview, which takes place in Osawatomie, Kansas. Next, Kroft switches to the subject of Congress and getting work done. In spite of it being an election year, the President contends he is still working. He wants to work with both parties in Congress, but will not wait when there is an opportunity to exercise his executive authority to get things done. Speaking on his vision for the future, President Obama says he wants to create policies that benefits the majority of Americans. He is even willing to go against some of the ideology his own party has promoted in the past to accomplish this. Kroft concludes the interview by asking the President why he should be re-elected. Obama gives a convincing argument that includes his accomplishments on health care reform, saving the auto industry, ending Don't Ask Don't Tell, decimating Al Qaeda, and getting the economy on the road to recovery.Let’s take a closer look at Obama’s in-depth discussion of the choices that have gotten him this far and his plans for a second term. ABOUT THE BOOK “I can’t sit down long enough to write a book, and now I don’t have to ‘cause my buddy Mark Levin new book is out called Ameritopia: The Unmaking of America. I don’t have to write another book, at least not now.” - Rush Limbaugh Three years since the publication of his book, Liberty and Tyranny: A Conservative Manifesto, best-selling author and conservative radio talk show host, Mark R. Levin published Ameritopia: The Unmaking of America. In the book’s introduction, Levin explains his reasoning for writing the book as a desire to answer certain questions regarding a utopian ideology he saw that “both attracts a free people and destroys them.” He noted that great leaders and thinkers, such as Ronald Reagan, Abraham Lincoln, Joseph Story, and the Founding Fathers, “feared” such an ideology and recognized its “threat” and “destructiveness.” His desire to pen Ameritopia spurred largely from the recent shift to incorporate said ideology of utopianism into the American life. Said shift added to an ever-widening gap between ideologies in American political parties. By the end of President George W. Bush’s second term in office, there was a great deal of outrage from the liberal left and portions of the conservative right regarding various policies and actions. During the 2008 election season, a relatively unknown African-American Senator from Illinois named Barack Hussein Obama burst onto the scene as a challenger to Democratic presidential candidate, New York Senator, and former First Lady, Hillary Clinton. The possibility of the first African-American to be elected president was touted as a “historical moment,” and many claimed to support him for just that reason -- to be part of history. Members of the audience fainted in more than one instance during Obama’s campaign. What happened next sent ripples of shock through the nation. Not only did Obama win the Democratic nomination, but with virtually no vetting, he won the election for President on the promise of “Hope and Change.” In 2009, Levin published his book Liberty and Tyranny, which compared the conservative and liberal viewpoints. Jeffrey Lord of The American Spectator claimed that the book was a “major political player” in the 2010 elections, which created sweeping changes in power across the country. A number of traditionally Democratic offices were defeated and won by Republicans. Lord also posited that Levin’s Ameritopia would make an “explosive impact in 2012” following its predecessor, Liberty and Tyranny. In his review of Ameritopia, Author David Limbaugh (brother to radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh) explained why the Utopian ideal is dangerous for America, perhaps stating better than Lord why the book could have an impact in the 2012 elections: EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK “[...] in Utopia, More creates the outline of a representative government structure. However, it is largely irrelevant, given the established dictates affecting minute details of daily life.” A Utopian society is created, with every conceivable problem addressed as those in charge strip away rights and emotional attachments from the people. Servants exist in this paradise and the kingdom itself is isolated from the rest of the world in order to protect itself from unwanted outside influences that could disrupt the ideal society. Families are routinely split up, because the state knows better than parents where children should live, what occupation they should pursue and how best, overall, to raise and educate them. Travel is controlled because papers (passports) are required by law in order for any travel, even inside the kingdom, to be permitted. ...buy the book to continue reading!
