The first four chapters focus on history taking, test selection, profiling of test results, report writing, and informing the client. The remaining thirteen chapters contain nearly all the tests covered in the first edition plus almost the same number of new ones. Some of the new tests are: Kaufman-Brief Intelligence Test, Mini-Mental State Examination, Wechsler Individual Achievement Test, Design Fluency Test, California Verbal Learning Test, and Boston Diagnostic Aphasia Test. For each test, the authors provide a thorough description, source and price, instructions for administration, duration, scoring procedures, normative data, and validity information. They also discuss special tests and clinical techniques in examining the functional integrity of brain regions. The volume does not limit itself to the adult age range, but includes all the norms available for pediatric and gerontological populations, as well as neuropsychological tests developed specifically for children.

Over the last several decades, the remarkable success of science and medical technology has allowed many children with chronic illness and handicapping conditions to live longer and healthier lives. But this suc cess is not without toll. The human cost of chronic illness or a handicap ping condition can be enormous for the child and the family. For the family, there is often the stressful daily burden of care, fatigue, marital stress, low family morale, financial burdens, and reduced career mobili ty. For the child, there are often arduous and painful treatment regimes, frequent school absences, low energy periods, and uncertainties with respect to future education and vocation. The course of many diseases is unpredictable, and the very fact of chronicity implies ongoing coping problems for the family and the child. The impact of a chronic illness or handicapping condition on a family system is usually more disintegrative than integrative, disrupting the lives of all family members and exacerbating the developmental risks to the child. It is not surprising that a recent comprehensive study for establish ing public policies for children with chronic illness at Vanderbilt Univer sity has called attention to these factors and produced, as a primary recommendation, increased attention to the psychological impact of dis ease on the family and the child. In this context there is an important need for adequate assessment of psychological and behavioral problems in these children to plan for appropriate services.

Diagnostic Assessment Of Learning Disabilities In Childhood written by Amber E. Brueggemann Taylor and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-02-14 with Psychology categories.

Diagnosing learning disabilities (LD) in children has never been an easy task. The multiple approaches in use complicate the assessment process, raising the risk of young students getting the wrong services, or none at all. It is clear that more accurate diagnosis and classification methods are needed to advance the prevention and treatment of difficulties in reading and mathematics. Diagnostic Assessment of Learning Disabilities in Childhood takes important steps to cut through the confusion. This timely resource weighs the strengths and weaknesses of commonly used assessment methods including the aptitude-achievement discrepancy, cognitive processing, RTI and low achievement approaches and introduces the author's academic impairment model as a promising alternative. A chapter on comorbid disorders in students with LD guides readers in the fine points of differential diagnosis. And to make the coverage especially practical, the book's features link the theoretical to the real-world practice of LD assessment, among them: Overviews of LD identification and definitions. Analysis of widely used diagnostic approaches with strengths and weaknesses. Examples of assessment protocols and report writing. Case examples illustrating diagnostic issues. Q&A sections with leading experts in the field. Useful summaries, appendices and resource links. Diagnostic Assessment of Learning Disabilities in Childhood is an invaluable reference for school and clinical child psychologists, special education and allied educational professionals and researchers and graduate students in school, educational and clinical child psychology who are dedicated to higher measurement standards and greater opportunities for children’s academic success.
