What are they? Where did they come from? Why are they called "apocryphal"? What do they say? How do they say it? An introductory chapter sketches the development of the Old Testament canon and the apocryphal books. The following chapters contain key sections from each of the traditional fourteen books. These quotations are introduced and connected to assure a snapshot of the content and a sample of the style. Most of the apocryphal books were written more than two thousand years ago in the Greek language by and for the Jewish community. They provide valuable insights into Jewish culture, religion, piety, and history during the four hundred years between the Old and New Testaments. Thought questions at the end of each chapter invite reflection on the relevance of the content of these books for today.

Excerpt from Readings From the Apocrypha The object of this little book is very simple: it is to familiarize English readers with the treasures contained in the deutero-canonical writings which we call the Apocrypha. The Church of England, it is true, in her lectionary, requires certain passages of these writings to be read in churches; but, as these passages are not read on Sundays, few people know much about them. I have made the Authorized Version the basis of the text here printed; but, in places where it is plainly faulty, I have tried to mend its defects, relying largely on the material supplied by the notes in C. J. Ball's Variorum Apocrypha (an in valuable book), Charles's two sumptuous volumes, Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha of the Old Testa ment and on the help afforded by the Revised Version of the Apocrypha though I have used the last somewhat sparingly. What books were left out of the Bible and why? First issued in 1926, this is the most popular collection of apocryphal and pseudepigraphal literature ever published. Here, in one place, are the infancy gospels, the letter of Jesus to Abgarus, the Gospel of Nicodemus, the Legends of Paul and Thecla, the Epistles of Clement and Barnabus, the Shepherd of Hermas, the Books of Adam and Eve, the Secrets of Enoch, the Psalms and Odes of Solomon, the many Testaments of the Patriarchs, and many more ancient books which were highly revered, but ultimately left out of the Bible.

This is a reissue of the book originally written by Hugh J. Schonfield in 1939 and published by Nelson in 1940. The front flap of the dust cover describes the work thus:"A collection of the many interesting stories about our Lord to be found in the accounts of His life not regarded as "canonical." The importance of these documents lies in the fact that they embody a useful remnant of independent tradition about the life and teaching of Christ; also they throw light on the spiritual outlook of the early Christian Age in which they were compiled. The Gospels of James, of Pseudo-Matthew, of Thomas, and of Nicodemus are those from which extracts have been taken, and the translation used is that of the late Alexander Walker."Here we have re-set and produced this fascinating book in Kindle Format.

For many across the world, the books of the Apocrypha are Christian Scripture. Learn more about them as you learn more about how Jesus thought and lived. Using a thematic approach, Dr. David deSilva gives a brief introduction and summary of these largely unknown and unappreciated books. In addition the book gives an overview to the social and cultural context of the world of the Apocrypha and early Christianity. After surveying the Apocrypha’s relevance and impact on Christian practices and spiritual formation, the book highlights the Apocrypha’s impact on Jesus, the New Testament, and the formation of the Early Church’s doctrines and theology. Core Biblical Studies fulfill the need for brief, substantive, yet highly accessible introductions to key subjects and themes in biblical studies. In the shifting tides of biblical interpretation, these books are designed to help students locate relevant meanings in conversation with the text. As a first step toward substantive and subsequent learning, the series draws on the best scholarship in order to provide foundational concepts and contextualized information on a broad scope of issues, methods, perspectives, and trends.
