What are they? Where did they come from? Why are they called "apocryphal"? What do they say? How do they say it? An introductory chapter sketches the development of the Old Testament canon and the apocryphal books. The following chapters contain key sections from each of the traditional fourteen books. These quotations are introduced and connected to assure a snapshot of the content and a sample of the style. Most of the apocryphal books were written more than two thousand years ago in the Greek language by and for the Jewish community. They provide valuable insights into Jewish culture, religion, piety, and history during the four hundred years between the Old and New Testaments. Thought questions at the end of each chapter invite reflection on the relevance of the content of these books for today.

Excerpt from Readings From the Apocrypha The object of this little book is very simple: it is to familiarize English readers with the treasures contained in the deutero-canonical writings which we call the Apocrypha. The Church of England, it is true, in her lectionary, requires certain passages of these writings to be read in churches; but, as these passages are not read on Sundays, few people know much about them. I have made the Authorized Version the basis of the text here printed; but, in places where it is plainly faulty, I have tried to mend its defects, relying largely on the material supplied by the notes in C. J. Ball's Variorum Apocrypha (an in valuable book), Charles's two sumptuous volumes, Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha of the Old Testa ment and on the help afforded by the Revised Version of the Apocrypha though I have used the last somewhat sparingly. English Standard Version Bible With Apocrypha written by Oxford University Press and has been published by Oxford University Press, USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with Bible categories.

The English Standard Version Bible captures as far as possible the precise wording of the original biblical text and the personal style of each Bible writer, while taking into account differences of grammar, syntax, and idiom between current literary English and the original languages. The ESV thus provides an accurate rendering of the original texts that is in readable, high quality English prose and poetry. This Bible has been growing in popularity among students in biblical studies, mainline Christian scholars and clergy, and Evangelical Christians of all denominations. Along with that growth comes the need for the books of the Apocrypha to be included in ESV Bibles, both for denominations that use those books in liturgical readings and for students who need them for historical purposes. More Evangelicals are also beginning to be interested in the Apocrypha, even though they don't consider it God's Word. The English Standard Version Bible with the Apocrypha, for which the Apocrypha has been commissioned by Oxford University Press, employs the same methods and guidelines used by the original translators of the ESV, to produce for the first time an ESV Apocrypha. This will be the only ESV with Apocrypha available anywhere, and it includes all of the books and parts of books in the Protestant Apocrypha, the Catholic Old Testament, and the Old Testament as used in Orthodox Christian churches. It has a lovely pre-printed case binding, and includes a full-color map section, a table of weights and measures used in the Bible, and many other attractive features. The English Standard Version Bible with Apocrypha is certain to become the preferred Bible in more conservative divinity schools and seminaries, where the Apocrypha is studied from an academic perspective. And it answers the need of conservative Christians in general for a more literal version of these books.

This is a reissue of the book originally written by Hugh J. Schonfield in 1939 and published by Nelson in 1940. The front flap of the dust cover describes the work thus:"A collection of the many interesting stories about our Lord to be found in the accounts of His life not regarded as "canonical." The importance of these documents lies in the fact that they embody a useful remnant of independent tradition about the life and teaching of Christ; also they throw light on the spiritual outlook of the early Christian Age in which they were compiled. The Gospels of James, of Pseudo-Matthew, of Thomas, and of Nicodemus are those from which extracts have been taken, and the translation used is that of the late Alexander Walker."Here we have re-set and produced this fascinating book in Kindle Format.
