Achttiende-eeuwse satire over apen die mensen willen worden. Geen boek in de Nederlandse literatuur is vergelijkbaar met ‘Reize door het Apenland’ van Gerrit Paape, in 1788 gepubliceerd onder het pseudoniem J.A. Schasz. De ik-verteller komt voor een onmogelijke keuze te staan: zijn vrouw, dienstmeisje, paard en hond zijn allemaal in het water beland en hij kan niet kiezen wie van hen eerst gered moet worden. Daardoor verdrinken ze allemaal. Zijn woedende dorpsgenoten klagen hem aan en roddel maakt zijn misdaden groter en groter. De man vlucht naar Apenland, waar hij de eer krijgt de Apenvergadering bij te wonen. Thema van de vergadering: het moment waarop de apen mensen zullen worden. Maar is dat wel een goed idee? Een politieke satire die door haar hilarische en groteske karakter de tand des tijds heeft doorstaan. Een Nederlandse variant op Voltaires 'Candide'. Gerrit Paape (1752-1803) was journalist, dichter, rechter en romanschrijver. Als journalist joeg hij de staat dermate tegen zich in het harnas, dat hij de benen moest nemen naar België. Door een beschuldiging van majesteitsschennis mocht hij zelfs vier gewesten van Nederland niet meer in. Zijn satirische roman ‘Het leven en sterven van een hedendaagse aristocraat’ werd omarmd door het publiek. Van zijn grote productie heeft slechts één roman de literatuurgeschiedenis gehaald: ‘Reize door het Apenland’.

Satire is clearly one of today’s most controversial socio-cultural topics. In this edited volume, The Power of Satire, it is studied for the first time as a dynamic, discursive mode of performance with the power of crossing and contesting cultural boundaries.
