Comment analyser les relations familiales et leur impact sur les individus ? Cet ouvrage présente des modèles et des méthodes d'analyse anglo-saxons du fonctionnement familial peu connus en France. Tout au long de notre vie, les relations que nous entretenons avec notre famille jouent un rôle essentiel dans notre développement et notre mode de fonctionnement. Que ce soit de manière positive ou négative, il est certain que notre entourage participe à notre construction en tant qu’individu. Toutefois, évaluer précisément cette influence dans une situation clinique donnée n’est pas chose facile pour le praticien. Pour faciliter l’investigation du rôle de la famille, divers instruments l’évaluation ont été développés au cours des soixante dernières années. Cet ouvrage s’attache à les décrire, en partant de plusieurs modèles théoriques du fonctionnement familial, pour ensuite présenter les outils qui en sont issus. L’auteur expose ici des questionnaires, des grilles d’observation de comportements relationnels ou encore des procédures d’entretien, parfois dans leur intégralité, afin que tout thérapeute intéressé puisse ensuite les réutiliser. Nicolas Favez propose une édition revue et augmentée de son ouvrage L'examen clinique de la famille, à destination des thérapeutes. EXTRAIT Depuis la naissance des traitements individuels psycho-analytiques, et, au travers du temps, avec le développement des thérapies de famille, les recherches en psychologie et en psychiatrie ont montré que les relations familiales, qu’elles soient comprises comme la représentation que les personnes se font de leurs liens familiaux (« mon père est un homme aimant », par exemple) ou comme les interactions « in vivo » de la famille (des disputes incessantes entre les partenaires d’un couple, telles que peut les constater un observateur externe), ont un impact sur le bien-être de chaque individu. En tant que premier milieu social dans lequel l’enfant est baigné, la famille est considérée depuis longtemps comme le creuset dans lequel se développe la personnalité. Pourtant, mis à part peut-être dans les situations extrêmes de violence ou de rejet, la littérature scientifique et clinique n’a pas mis en évidence de déterminisme strict entre relations familiales et difficultés de développement ou pathologie individuelle : certaines personnes peuvent survivre dans des milieux qui semblent hostiles, d’autres être profondément déstabilisées par de légères tensions entre leurs parents. Le lien entre climat familial et développement individuel semble donc ne pas être univoque, mais dépendre d’un certain nombre de facteurs et processus sous-jacents aux relations interpersonnelles ; la psychologie, dans un effort conjoint avec la psychiatrie, s’est attaquée à la spécification de ces processus, dans un but à la fois de prévention et d’intervention. Henri F. Ellenberger, the Swiss medical historian, is best remembered today as the author of The Discovery of the Unconscious (1970), a brilliant, encyclopedic study of psychiatric theory and therapy from primitive times to the mid-twentieth century.
