A Robin Hood for the 90's, light years removed from the romantic vision of Errol Flynn ... but this gritty, pumped-up version can stand on its own. Rough, tough, and a rousing good time, with this version of the Sheriff of Nottingham a real surprise.

"Once in a lifetime." The phrase comes up over and over from the people who worked on Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings. The film's seventeen Oscars, record-setting earnings, huge fan base, and hundreds of ancillary products attest to its importance and to the fact that Rings is far more than a film. Its makers seized a crucial moment in Hollywood—the special effects digital revolution plus the rise of "infotainment" and the Internet—to satisfy the trilogy's fans while fostering a huge new international audience. The resulting franchise of franchises has earned billions of dollars to date with no end in sight. Kristin Thompson interviewed seventy-six people to examine the movie's scripting and design and the new technologies deployed to produce the films, video games, and DVDs. She demonstrates the impact Rings had on the companies that made it, on the fantasy genre, on New Zealand, and on independent cinema. In fast-paced, compulsively readable prose, she affirms Jackson's Rings as one the most important films ever made.

Welcome back to Sherwood Forest... The delights of Dumas' novels are well known. Less known today are his tales of Robin Hood. With pleasure, we present these two old works to a new century of readers. English versions of "The Prince of Thieves" and "Robin Hood the Outlaw" have virtually disappeared from bookshelves; they are now edited, corrected, and made accessible to the world in print and e-formats, by the Reginetta Press. In this first volume, "The Prince of Thieves," Alexandre Dumas relates his own unique version of Robin Hood's origins and upbringing, how Robin was robbed of his heritage, how Robin becomes acquainted with Marian, Little John, Friar Tuck, and the Merrie Men, and the events leading up to Robin Hood's life as an outlaw. Alfred Allinson's translation lends enchantingly antique wording, transporting us to the charm of a Sherwood Forest of former, fanciful days.

"The Adventures of Robin Hood" by Howard Pyle, full of action-packed adventure, tells the story of an outlaw named Robin Hood who lived in Sherwood Forest. In this timeless classic, Robin Hood and his "Merry Men" stole from the rich to help the poor. Unfortunately for them, the sheriff of Nottingham didn't appreciate their good will. Howard Pyle was the first modern writer to collect all the Robin Hood ballads that had come down from the medieval era and structure them as stories. Every version of Robin Hood since Pyle's time has drawn on this book as a major source. As a result, reading Pyle's "The Adventures of Robin Hood" is the best way to understand why the minor characters in Kevin Costner's "Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves" are named things like "Will Scarlet" or "Much the Miller's Son." Because Howard Pyle is known better as an illustrator than a writer, the original illustrations by Pyle are included in this book. Though black and white, Pyle's illustrations are immensely rich and detailed, and as full of period accuracy and background research as his writing. Reading Pyle's book without his illustrations is like watching an Oscar-winning film with the screen blacked out-and this version does include facsimile's of Pyle's original drawings which illustrate the story so well.
