Weinig mensen realiseren zich dat scheiden nog maar kort geleden heel veel moeilijker was dan nu. Eeuwenlang stond de huwelijkswetgeving onder de allesoverheersende invloed van kerk. Het huwelijk kon alleen door de dood ontbonden worden, al vond men in de Bijbel twee gronden waarop in sommige gevallen echtscheiding mogelijk was: op grond van overspel en bij kwaadwillige verlating. Deze twee gronden zijn in feite van toepassing gebleven tot 1971, toen een liberale wetswijziging nog maar één echtscheidingsgrond eiste: duurzame ontwrichting van het huwelijk. Daarmee kwam ook een einde aan de `grote leugen: de noodzaak overspel te bekennen als je uit elkaar wilde. Hoe moeilijk echtparen het hadden die wilden scheiden, blijkt uit de stroom van brieven die men aan de overheid schreef, zeker in de jaren zestig, toen de behoefte aan een modernere wetgeving steeds groter werd. De minister van Justitie, de Tweede Kamer, zelfs de koningin kregen vele brieven van wanhopige mensen in een uitzichtloze situatie. De persoonlijke verhalen uit deze brieven, die zich bevinden in het Nationaal Archief, vormen het uitgangspunt voor dit boek. Het zijn vele en veelsoortige verhalen van mensen voor wie het huwelijk een last werd. Tezamen geven zij een treffend, maar ook onthutsend beeld van de naoorlogse verhoudingen in Nederland.
