Dostojewski's beroemde, waarschijnlijk meest gelezen roman wordt nu in een nieuwe vertaling uit het Russisch aan de Nederlandse lezers aangeboden onder de titel, die enigszins vrij is weergegeven, maar die een vertrouwde klank voor ons heeft: Schuld en boete. Dit boek, dat in 1867 verscheen, is de eerste van de zgn. grote romans van Dostojewski. Hierin is de hoofdlijn strakker vastgehouden dan bij deze schrijver soms het geval is. Het is de geschiedenis van de geestelijk en sociaal onderkomen student Raskoljnikow, die door een 'Napoleontische' daad zijn gevoel van eigenwaarde en onafhankelijkheid tracht te handhaven en een moordenaar wordt. Later komt hij door zijn liefde voor het gevallen meisje Sonja, die verheffend op hem werkt, tot vrijwillige schuldbetekenis. Deze hoofdlijn wordt met andere gecombineerd en vaak erdoor gekruist. Dit gebeurt voornamelijk, doordat Dostojewski naast de donkere figuur van de hoofdpersoon de lichte gestalte plaatst van zijn zuster Doenja, die in haar ongereptheid en zuivere bedoelding wordt bedreigd door duistere elementen als Loedjin en Swidrigïlow. Deze samenstelling levert een grootse dramatische schildering op. Ook in de nevenpersonen van de handeling zijn er vele die door de fijne en diepgaande karakteristiek van de schrijver een onvergetelijke indruk maken.
