“An exquisitely crafted memoir” by two brothers who lost their parents, lost their inheritance—and almost lost their freedom (The Wall Street Journal). Frederick Barthelme and his brother Steven were both accomplished, respected writers with stable adult lives when they lost both of their parents in rapid succession. They had already lost their other brother, just a few years earlier. Suddenly they were on their own, emotionally unmoored—and unprepared for what would happen next. Their late father had been a prominent architect, and the brothers were left with a healthy inheritance. Over the following several years, they would lose close to a quarter million dollars in the gambling boats off the Mississippi coast. Then, in a bizarre twist, they were charged with violating state gambling laws, fingerprinted, and thrown into the surreal world of felony prosecution. For two years these widely publicized charges hung over their heads, shadowing their every step. Double Down is the wry, often heartbreaking story of how Frederick and Steven Barthelme got into this predicament. It is also a reflection on the allure of casinos and the pull and power of illusions that can destroy our lives if we aren’t careful. “One of the best firsthand accounts ever written about organized gambling. Like Goodman Brown, taking a walk with a hooded stranger into the darkness of the New England woods, the Barthelme brothers suddenly find themselves inside the maw of the monster. The compulsion to control, to intuit the future, to be painted by magic, could not be better or more accurately described.” —James Lee Burke “Beautifully evoking the gamblers’ addiction, their mesmerizing account is best read as a novel Camus might have imagined, with the writer/protagonists as their own lost characters. A work of high art; enthusiastically recommended.” —Library Journal

Few people have been in the unique position of being able to observe and record the dramatic changes that have taken place in the islands of Fiji over the past 80 years than fourth-generation citizen, Daryl Tarte. He writes emotively, in great detail, about his personal experience of growing up on a remote island during the colonial era, when races were segregated, and white people lived an elite existence. Following independence, he has been personally involved with many of the key economic, political and social activities that have evolved and enabled the nation to progress during the 20th century. These include the sugar industry, tourism, commerce and industry, religion, the media, women and of course, the coups. His observations into the complexities of leadership in these areas of national development are fascinating and perceptive. Much of the story is told through the eyes of the many people of all races with whom he has interacted. Fiji is made up of over 300 unique islands. Tarte has been to many of them, and in a final chapter he gives an insightful commentary of how different they all are.

The Book Of Jubilees written by Robert Henry Charles and has been published by Sta this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-05-21 with Religion categories.

The Book of Jubilees or as it is sometimes called "the little Genesis " purports to be a revelation given by God to Moses through the medium of an angel and containing a history divided up into jubilee-periods of forty-nine years from the creation to the coming of Moses. Though the actual narrative of events is only carried down to the birth and early career of Moses its author envisages the events of a later time and in particular certain events of special interest at the time when he wrote which was probably in the latter years of the second century B.C. perhaps in the reign of the Maccabean prince John Hyrcanus. Though distinguished from the Pentateuch proper it presupposes and supplements the latter. The actual narrative embraces material contained in the whole of Genesis and part of Exodus. But the legal regulations given presuppose other parts of the Pentateuch especially the so-called "Priest's Code" and certain details in the narrative are probably intended to apply to events that occurred in the author's own time the latter years of the second century B.C. The author himself seems to have contemplated the speedy inauguration of the Messianic Age and in this respect his point of view is similar to that of the Apocalyptic writers. But his work though it contains one or two passages of an apocalyptic character is quite unlike the typical apocalypses. It is largely narrative based upon the historical narratives in Genesis and Exodus interspersed with legends and emphasizing certain legal practices. But his main object was to inculcate a reform in the regulation of the calendar and festivals in place of the intercalated lunar calendar which he condemns in the strongest language. He proposes to substitute for this a solar calendar consisting of 12 months and containing 364 days. Wilder Publications is a green publisher. All of our books are printed to order.
