Stranger in Baja takes the reader to sun-struck and tawdry Cabo San Lucas, the overdeveloped resort outpost on Mexico's bone-dry southern Baja peninsula and the setting for a street war between evangelical foreigners and local Catholics. Troubled by doubts and demons, naive missionary volunteer Rob Hudson arrives in Cabo on a soul-seeking mission and finds a world of inept arsonists, wily healers, prying journalists, Machiavellian bosses, troubled hermits, hip-hop bands, lunar rituals, drug gangs and a music teacher who rocks his soul.

'One of the great social historians of our time. No one else makes history this fun' Amanda Foreman 'How Was It For You? subtly but powerfully subverts complacent male assumptions about a legendary decade' David Kynaston -------------------------------- "A feeling that we could do whatever we liked swept through us in the 60s . . ." The sixties: a decade of space travel, utopian dreams and - above all - sexual revolution. It liberated a generation. But mostly men. Meet dollybird Mavis, debutante Kristina, bunny girl Patsy, industrial campaigner Mary and countercultural Caroline. From Carnaby Street to Merseyside, white gloves to Black is Beautiful, their stories illustrate a turbulent power struggle, throwing an unsparing spotlight on morals, drugs, race, bomb culture and sex. This is a moving, shocking book about tearing up the world and starting again. It's about peace, love and psychedelia, but also misogyny, violation and discrimination, in a decade discovering a new cause: equality. And women would never be the same again. -------------------------------- 'Sparkling . . . there is a wonderfully diverse range of voices . . . we have a long way to go, but reading this book made me grateful for how far we have come' Daisy Goodwin, The Sunday Times 'An absorbing study of an extraordinary age. Beautifully written and intensively researched' Selina Hastings

Sex Goes To School written by Susan K. Freeman and has been published by University of Illinois Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-10-01 with History categories.

When seeking approaches for sex education, few look to the past for guidance. But Susan K. Freeman's investigation of the classrooms of the 1940s and 1950s offers numerous insights into the potential for sex education to address adolescent challenges, particularly for girls. From rural Toms River, New Jersey, to urban San Diego and many places in between, the use of discussion-based classes fostered an environment that focused less on strictly biological matters of human reproduction and more on the social dimensions of the gendered and sexual worlds that the students inhabited. Although the classes reinforced normative heterosexual gender roles that could prove repressive, the discussion-based approach also emphasized a potentially liberating sense of personal choice and responsibility in young women's relationship decisions. In addition to the biological and psychological underpinnings of normative sexuality, teachers presented girls' sex lives and gendered behavior as critical to the success of American families and, by extension, the entire way of life of American democracy. The approaches of teachers and students were sometimes predictable and other times surprising, yet almost wholly without controversy in the two decades before the so-called Sexual Revolution of the 1960s. Sex Goes to School illuminates the tensions between and among adults and youth attempting to make sense of sex in a society that was then, as much as today, both sex-phobic and sex-saturated.

Radical Eroticism written by Rachel Middleman and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-01-16 with Art categories.

In the 1960s, the fascination with erotic art generated a wave of exhibitions and critical discussion on sexual freedom, visual pleasure, and the nude in contemporary art. Radical Eroticism examines the importance of women’s contributions in fundamentally reconfiguring representations of sexuality across several areas of advanced art—performance, pop, postminimalism, and beyond. This study shows that erotic art made by women was integral to the profound changes that took place in American art during the sixties, from the crumbling of modernist aesthetics and the expanding field of art practice to the emergence of the feminist art movement. Artists Carolee Schneemann, Martha Edelheit, Marjorie Strider, Hannah Wilke, and Anita Steckel created works that exemplify these innovative approaches to the erotic, exploring female sexual subjectivities and destabilizing assumptions about gender. Rachel Middleman reveals these artists’ radical interventions in both aesthetic conventions and social norms.

Swappers, singers, transvestites, nymphos, hookers, dominatrixes, lesbians: these subjects were only several of the naughty novels of the 1960s. This lurid, taboo book genre (known to collectors of vintage smut gems as 'sleaze') only went as far as third base' - hardcore pornography only came to play after the mid-70s. Sin-A-Rama explores the long-neglected and often brilliant popcult manifestation, with attention paid to what occurred behind closed doors with the pseudonymous and sometimes jailed authors and artists.'

Swinging Single written by Hilary Radner and has been published by U of Minnesota Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999 with Social Science categories.

Critics and defenders alike connect today's widespread anxieties about sexuality and culture to the political activism of the 1960s and the counterculture's preoccupation with the individual pursuit of pleasure. In contrast, the essays in Swindling Single attribute the new sexual mores of that era not to its political upheavals but to a confluence of social, cultural, and economic factors that encouraged personal gratification and altered traditionally defined gender roles. Contributors analyze a broad range of topics: the commercialization of avant-garde and exploitation films; new visions of female sexuality in That Girl and The Avengers; the social context of such cultural icons as Hugh Hefner and Charles Manson; the intersection of race and sexuality in Eldridge Cleaver's Soul oil Ice; and depictions of sexual pleasure in pornography and scientific films.
