Not illustrated. 1903 edition. Excerpt: ..."gods of Hellas" back again, whereas he merely casts back a last fond look on the ideals incorporated in his conception of the Greek world of beauty--on Nature vergottert instead of die entgotterte Natur of the present world. It is not a hymn in praise of Greek polytheism--for this was to him, as it must be to all moderns, a dead and alien faith--but an elegiac renunciation of the lost paradise of that age. In a similar mood Wordsworth, disgusted with modern materialism and utilitarianism, wrote his sonnet, "The world is too much with us." Analysis: 1-8, Contrast between the Greek world of light and beauty and the present age; 9-16, the Greek imagination peopled Nature with divine beings; 17-32, examples from Greek mythology; 33-40, the gods even descended to earth and mingled with mortals, drawn by Love; 41-48, instead of gloomy self-abnegation, ajbright and cheerful service was theirs; 49-56, examples from the Greek games and dances; and 57-64, the worship of Bacchus; 65-72, even Death was beautified by artistic conceptions; 73-80, the future life was more human; 81-88, mortals might rise to the rank of Immortals; 89-96, a sigh for the restoration of that "fair world"; 97-100, northern gloom and ascetic rigor now prevail; 101-116, Nature has degenerated into a soulless machine, governed by the mechanical laws of dead matter; 117-128, with the Greek gods all Beauty has fled from the world, and lives only in the land of Poesy, in the heart of the Poet. 2)a ifyr nod) bie fd&one 2Belt regieret, 2ln ber reube leid)tem (c)angelbanb-' (c)elige (Mraleter nod) gefiifiret, (c)d;one taselenTaug bem gabettanb! 1 bie fdjbne 2Belt, the world was then "fair," not a gloomy vale of tears; regieret,

Excerpt from Shorter Poems of Goethe and Schiller: In Chronological Order IT is no longer necessary to excuse or defend the chronological arrangement of poetical selections, which lends an additional interest both to the individual poems and to the collection as a whole. It is believed that the present little book is the first attempt not only to treat the two greatest of German poets conjointly in this way, but to weave together the biographical sketch and the poems in chronological order. While, however, the advantages and charms of such a plan are self-evident, it must not be forgotten that each poem is to-be regarded and enjoyed also for its own sake as a work of art, without reference to the temporary and accidental circumstances to which it owes its origin and existence. Schiller's Poems by Friedrich Schiller. Classic Poetry. Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller (10 November 1759 - 9 May 1805) was a German poet, philosopher, historian, and playwright. During the last seventeen years of his life (1788-1805), Schiller struck up a productive, if complicated, friendship with already famous and influential Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. They frequently discussed issues concerning aesthetics, and Schiller encouraged Goethe to finish works he left as sketches. This relationship and these discussions led to a period now referred to as Weimar Classicism. They also worked together on Xenien, a collection of short satirical poems in which both Schiller and Goethe challenge opponents to their philosophical vision. Schiller returned with his family to Weimar from Jena in 1799. Goethe convinced him to return to playwriting. He and Goethe founded the Weimar Theater, which became the leading theater in Germany. Their collaboration helped lead to a renaissance of drama in Germany. For his achievements, Schiller was ennobled in 1802 by the Duke of Weimar, adding the nobiliary particle "von" to his name. He remained in Weimar, Saxe-Weimar until his death at 45 from tuberculosis in 1805.

Excerpt from Select Minor Poems, Translated From the German of Goethe and Schiller: With Notes Poet's life is in his works; especially in such lighter lyric pieces. They are the most genuine things the poet does into them goes most of the character and nature of the man; in them you have him under all his moods and aspects; and if they win you to their mood, and haunt you long, you feel that 'you know him. Could Goethe and Schiller be brought near us in some such living way, it would give a new impulse to our literature, and inspire worthier aims and methods of culture, than prevail. The student of these writers looks up to them as benefactors to his whole nature. From Schiller he learns lofty aspirations, and from Goethe how to realize them. The one speaks to him amid the hackneyed forms of life of a better ideal world, and warns him, inspires him, to trust all inward inti mations of the True, the Beautiful, the Perfect, how ever contradicted by the Actual. The other shows him the riper practical wisdom, which makes much of. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
