Silas Marner: The Weaver of Raveloe (1861) is de derde roman van George Eliot en haar persoonlijke favoriet. De verbitterde wever Silas Marner komt op zichzelf te wonen nadat hij vanwege onterechte beschuldigingen van diefstal door zijn gemeenschap verstoten wordt. Hij leeft alleen maar voor het geld en zijn werk, totdat zijn geld gestolen wordt en een wees per toeval zijn huis binnenvalt. Nu krijgt Silas de kans om zijn leven te veranderen. Silas‘ levensloop en die van Eppie, de wees die hij later adopteert, is verweven met die van Godfrey Cass, zoon van de landheer, die eveneens verstrikt is geraakt in zijn verleden. De Brit Mary Anne Evans (1819 – 1880), bekend onder haar pseudoniem George Eliot, was journalist, vertaler, schrijver en dichter. Ze is vooral bekend geworden door haar romans, waarvan ze er zeven schreef. Middlemarch (1871-72) is van die zeven ongetwijfeld de bekendste en wordt beschouwd als een hoogtepunt zo niet in de wereldliteratuur dan wel in de Victoriaanse literatuur. Haar romans zijn realistisch, psychologisch diepgaand en vaak gesitueerd in provinciaal Engeland.
