It is widely recognized that travel and tourism can have a high environmental impact and make a major contribution to climate change. It is therefore vital that ways to reduce these impacts are developed and implemented. 'Slow travel' provides such a concept, drawing on ideas from the 'slow food' movement with a concern for locality, ecology and quality of life. The aim of this book is to define slow travel and to discuss how some underlining values are likely to pervade new forms of sustainable development. It also aims to provide insights into the travel experience; these are explored in several chapters which bring new knowledge about sustainable transport tourism from across the world. In order to do this the book explores the concept of slow travel and sets out its core ingredients, comparing it with related frameworks such as low-carbon tourism and sustainable tourism development. The authors explain slow travel as holiday travel where air and car transport is rejected in favour of more environmentally benign forms of overland transport, which generally take much longer and become incorporated as part of the holiday experience. The book critically examines the key trends in tourism transport and recent climate change debates, setting out the main issues facing tourism planners. It reviews the potential for new consumption patterns, as well as current business models that facilitate hyper-mobility. This provides a cutting edge critique of the 'upstream' drivers to unsustainable tourism. Finally, the authors illustrate their approach through a series of case studies from around the world, featuring travel by train, bus, cycling and walking. Examples are drawn from Europe, Asia, Australia and the Americas. Abstract: Slow Tourism proclaims a decelerated and 'deeper' form of tourism. It is about making a conscious choice to experience a destination intensely. The concept is gaining attention as an alternative to contemporary mass tourism but remains under-researched, especially concerning spatial questions. This is crucial because of its emphasis on sensorial experiences of space. Slow tourism, therefore, is conceptualized from the perspective of space production to develop its theoretical construct. Space is understood as a social construct and, in a Lefebvrian sense, is not just produced but also productive. Lefebvre conceptualized a spatial triad consisting of the inseparable moments of perceived space (spatial practice), conceived space (representations of space) and lived space (spaces of representation). From a slow tourism perspective, this means that spatial practices of slow tourists refer to ideas of the slow movement as a conscious choice. These notions of authenticity, sustainability and connectivity signify representations of space, which enable the emergence of a lived counter-space. As a decelerated space, the slow tourism space antagonises people's alienation from accelerated spaces of the everyday life by changing the relationship between the lived body perceived and the tourist's spatial imaginations. In opposition to Lefebvre's understanding of tourism as a commodified practice, slow tourism foregrounds the perception of the destination with all senses and the non-dominant appropriation of space. As a result, slow tourism produces what Lefebvre calls a differential space and a rescue from the alienated relationship between man and space. Analysis of slow tourism offerings and media representations of slow tourism add empirical substance to the theoretical construct of slow tourism spaces and support the sensuously oriented understanding of slow tourism and its contextualization as a spatial problem

This book investigates small town tourism development in South Africa taking into account the most common strategies: branding, promotion, festivals and theming. The contents of the book resonate with the intersection of the power elite and their impacts on small town tourism. Because the book focuses on small town geographies in South Africa, the literature on small town tourism in the country is reviewed in Chapter 2 to provide a contextual background. Each subsequent chapter begins with an overview of international literature to give the conceptual context of the case studies each chapter explores. In Chapter 3 the concept of small town tourism branding is illustrated by an exploration of the Richmond book town. In Chapter 4 the branding theme is probed further in an investigation of two winners of the Kwêla Town of the Year competition namely Fouriesburg and De Rust. Chapter 5 documents the branding of Sedgefield through its proclamation as Africa’s first Cittaslow (slow town), a process driven by the local power elite to the exclusion of town’s poor who have no understanding of the intentions of the Cittaslow movement and its potential benefits for the town. Chapter 6 is a case study of Greyton’s tourism-led rural gentrification by which a small town has transformed in three decades to become a sought after place of residence for elite inmigrants so making the town a jewel tourism destination while reinforcing racial segregation. Because festivals and events - creations of the wealthy - have made significant financial contributions to small towns, Chapter 7 considers festivals and events as strategies to market and brand small towns in a particular way. Case studies of the economic impacts of festivals on small towns are assessed and the assessment methodologies used are critiqued. Chapter 8 provides a synthesis by drawing on the thesis of the urban growth machine by power elites.
