Showcasing the diverse ways that IoT can be employed for improvement in many areas of contemporary life, this new volume explores a multitude of IoT applications that provide advanced solutions for real-world problems. The selection of topics includes network on chip as the new paradigm for system on chip integration for maintaining high performance for IoT applications; new router designs to increase speed; and the challenges of wireless underground sensor networks, which have a wide range of applications in military, underground sensing, testing soil traits and moisture content, pollution control and location detection, security, and detection of natural calamities. Various state-of-the-art techniques such as optimization schemes, blockchain, machine learning, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing, etc., are also discussed in the context of cognitive IoT. The volume considers the uses of IoT in agriculture, discussing challenges along with solutions with the help of the latest technical smart tools to uplift the farming community, specifically IoT applications for information gathering to improve yield productivity, food and crop quality and sustainability, monitoring toxic substances and soil properties, etc. The book also covers a broad spectrum of IoT applications in the educational industry along with the challenges associated with them and how to facilitate the use of smart classroom technology. A chapter on IoT in the healthcare industry presents an IoT-based GPS-enabled smart jacket design to monitor heart rate, sugar level, blood pressure, fever, and stress level. The authors also present an IoT-based Peltier air conditioner design that overcomes the limitations of existing HVAC framework, a review of various energy harvesting techniques to generate electrical power from non-conventional power sources with their merits and demerits, and much more.

Good and smart decisions should be distinguished from wise decision-making — especially in the age of artificial intelligence (AI) where algorithms are increasingly used to automate business processes or to augment the accuracy and speed of decisions. This book argues why specific forms of intelligence as well as consciousness and enhanced conscience are crucial to make wise decisions — with consciousness to be clearly distinguished from intelligence. It also addresses why machine learning and smart computers (AI) are plausibly able to make 'smart' (and thus to a certain extent 'intelligent') decisions but definitely unable to help us to become wiser. In essence, optimizing a desired output in a business context will require a balanced approach with cognitive awareness and ethical reflection — synthesizing intuitive and algorithmic thinking — encompassing short-term profit and longer-term envisioning, and aiming to optimize created and captured value for shareholders while taking the concerns of those who have a real stake in the organization seriously. If business is about creating and sharing value in a future that is both 'digital' and 'relational', then innovative technologies like AI will play an increasingly important role. Consequently, mindful executives and their responsible boards therefore need to acknowledge the limitations of AI in business — especially when the uncertain future is estimated to be rather volatile or ambiguous than stable.

How To Stay Smart In A Smart World written by Gerd Gigerenzer and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-08-02 with Psychology categories.

How to stay in charge in a world populated by algorithms that beat us in chess, find us romantic partners, and tell us to “turn right in 500 yards.” Doomsday prophets of technology predict that robots will take over the world, leaving humans behind in the dust. Tech industry boosters think replacing people with software might make the world a better place—while tech industry critics warn darkly about surveillance capitalism. Despite their differing views of the future, they all agree: machines will soon do everything better than humans. In How to Stay Smart in a Smart World, Gerd Gigerenzer shows why that’s not true, and tells us how we can stay in charge in a world populated by algorithms. Machines powered by artificial intelligence are good at some things (playing chess), but not others (life-and-death decisions, or anything involving uncertainty). Gigerenzer explains why algorithms often fail at finding us romantic partners (love is not chess), why self-driving cars fall prey to the Russian Tank Fallacy, and how judges and police rely increasingly on nontransparent “black box” algorithms to predict whether a criminal defendant will reoffend or show up in court. He invokes Black Mirror, considers the privacy paradox (people want privacy, but give their data away), and explains that social media get us hooked by programming intermittent reinforcement in the form of the “like” button. We shouldn’t trust smart technology unconditionally, Gigerenzer tells us, but we shouldn’t fear it unthinkingly, either.

Our ideas about creativity, and particularly the most important kind--what Richard Ogle calls "breakthrough creativity"--are governed by a long-standing and deep-seated myth: "the mind inside the head." From ancient times, philosphers of mind have held that important ideas and insights come from the individual brains of geniuses with awesome rational powers, whose minds seem to function on a higher plane than those of normal folk.In recent years, however, as advances in cognitive science and network science have highlighted the importance of the external world, the social, cultural, and economic context in which ideas are generated, a classic paradigm shift has occurred. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi has posited the idea of the "extended mind," radically suggesting that the source of creativity lies not inside of our heads and brains, but outside them, in the connections between people and ideas. There has also been a concurrent, growing recognition of the role that imagination and intuition play in scientific breakthroughs, where in earlier times it was thought that superior rational thinking and logic were responsible for such advances. In The Mind Out There, Richard Ogle describes this paradigm shift and crystallizes its nature and implications for the first time. He argues that developments in the study of cognitive science, network science, and complexity, now allow us to see and understand how breakthrough ideas happen in a much clearer way, offering the beginnings of "a new science of ideas."The key to this science resides in what the author calls "idea-spaces," a set of nodes in a network of people (and their ideas) that cohere and take on a distinctive set of characteristics anddynamics leading to the generation of breakthrough ideas. These spaces are
