“Phantoms of Breslau is a cynical, moody thriller which solidifies Krajewski’s position as a distinctive voice in contemporary European fiction.” —Irish Examiner Breslau, 1919: The hideously battered, naked bodies of four sailors are discovered on an island in the River Oder. When Criminal Assistant Eberhard Mock, back from the war, arrives at the scene to investigate, he finds an enigmatic note addressed to him insisting that he admit to past mistakes and become a believer. As he endeavors to piece together the elements of the brutal crime, Mock combs the brothels and drinking dens of the then still-German city of Breslau and is drawn into an insidious game: it seems that anyone he questions during the course of the investigation is destined to become the next victim. Meanwhile, Mock uncovers a secret society that has the Criminal Assistant himself clearly in its sights. Dark, sophisticated, and uncompromising, the distinctive Breslau series has already received broad critical acclaim. Phantoms of Breslau confirms Eberhard Mock as one of the most outrageous and original detectives in crime fiction.

Thirteen Million Dollar Pop written by David Levien and has been published by Anchor this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-08-09 with Fiction categories.

The acclaimed author of City of the Sun returns with a relentlessly taut new novel featuring enigmatic private investigator Frank Behr and the American heartland setting that has won David Levien critical raves. In an Indianapolis underground parking structure, Frank Behr is on an executive protection detail for Bernard “Bernie Cool” Kolodnik, a hard-driving business mogul on the verge of making a move into big-time Indiana politics. Behr is working for an exclusive investigation company, and it’s an uncomfortable fit, both literally and philosophically. The uneasy stability is quickly rocked by a burst of automatic weapons fire as an attempt is made on the prominent client, and Behr manages to protect him and repel the attackers. Though Behr is celebrated for his heroism, he can’t help but investigate what happened in that garage—and why the Indianapolis cops seem to be burying the incident. As David Levien has masterfully done in his previous novels, he weaves a crime story that is teeming with real characters and electric energy—centered on the brooding psyche of Frank Behr. Thirteen Million Dollar Pop is unyieldingly compelling and will give readers yet another reason to enlist with this superbly talented writer.

Optimism In Politics written by Walter Laqueur and has been published by Transaction Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-04-30 with Political Science categories.

This new collection by Walter Laqueur, one of the most distinguished historians and political commentators of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, vividly brings to life his perspective on fifty years of political life. The essays in this volume deal with events ranging from more than seventy years ago to some that have not yet happened, but may in years to come. Laqueur divides his writings into five main areas: optimism in politics, the topic that unites this volume; Europe; the Arab Spring; Israel and Jewish affairs; and recollections of the past. This volume addresses an increasingly important question: How much optimism do we need in politics? Some neuroscientists believe that many of our assessments rest on an excess of optimism amounting to a dangerous bias. Another school of cognitive scientists sees the main danger in being influenced too much by negative conclusions. Although these competing perspectives have been only rarely investigated, Laqueur argues that such psychological factors play a decisive role in the assessment of political trends, and they should. Laqueur also reminds readers that there is a connection between writing history and commenting on current affairs, but it is not remotely as close and simple as often thought. The idea that the historian is somehow better qualified than others to interpret the present, let alone predict the future, is certainly not borne out by the evidence. Some great historians have been good and reliable political commentators, others have been miserable failures. Laqueur definitely falls in the former camp, as these reflections attest.

IN THIS SECOND book of The Scenturion Spy series, Dr. Milt Davidson has been recruited from the Empire State University (ESU) in New York, where he is an academic pathologist, to spy for the CIA. Since the Russians are developing bioweaponry based on odors that activate receptors in the nose and affect the brain, Milt – who completed graduate studies for a Ph.D.-degree on the sense of smell (olfaction) while in medical school – developed a biotechnology company (Pharmascent Sciences, Inc.) for new neurological therapies administered via smell. This became his cover to spy on Russia’s military’s research on olfaction after taking a sabbatical leave from ESU to work for the CIA. Milt - 43-year-old, handsome, smart, single, and unexpectedly suave for a scientist - gets involved with a French/Israeli spy, Marie Chalfont, as well as Dr. Natasha Petrushkin, a deputy science minister in the Russian parliament. Both help him settle in Moscow, seduce him, and are suspected of being double-agents. The book begins with Milt secretly escaping to St. Martin, where Marie is hiding from the Hezbollah, having assassinated one of their leaders. In Moscow, Milt spies on the Russian olfactory bioweaponry research program through both scientific pretexts and some seduction tactics of his own. Will Milt uncover major secrets of the Russian bioweaponry program? Or will his cover be blown, and American security threatened? Readers will find out soon enough in this thrilling page-turner.

Signature Kill written by David Levien and has been published by Anchor this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-03-24 with Fiction categories.

Taut and edgy, Signature Kill is a riveting exploration of a killer next door—a tour de force from acclaimed author David Levien. The quiet of the Indianapolis night is broken when an unidentifiable body is found in a local park, deliberately arranged in such a way that police know it’s not a random crime. Across the city, former cop Frank Behr, down on his luck and virtually broke, takes on a no-win case to locate a desperate mother’s wayward daughter who’s been missing for months. Behr has few friends left on the police force, but as he wades into the world of small-time prostitution from which the daughter disappeared, he comes to believe the two cases are related. When another body is found, it becomes clear Indianapolis has a serial killer on its streets . . . an untraceable predator who, Behr surmises, lives behind the chilling veil of a perfectly normal life. Behr’s pursuit threatens to become entangled in the official police investigation, and will lead him to a dark place—and ultimately to a devastating decision from which he will not be able to turn back. Signature Kill is a masterly novel, in which one man’s obsession with justice faces off against a killer’s all-consuming obsession with perfection.
