The Twelfth Annual Midwest Conference on Endocrinology and Metabolism continued the tradition of selecting a topic of inter est to a wide variety of scientists with interests in biology. The conference an "Hormones and Energy Metabolism" was dedicated appro priately to Dr. Samuel A. Brody, a leader in research in this field as described by Professor Johnson in this volume. A particular feature of these conferences has been the large proportion of time devoted to discussion of each paper and the pub lished proceedings have included edited transcripts of these dis cussions. Unfortunately, due to malfunction of the recording sys tem, major portians of the discussions were lost and, despite much effort, insufficient was salvageable tobe meaningful and helpful. Consequently, the editors decided to omit completely the discus sions except for a communication provided by Dr. Woodside. We again express our appreciation to the staff of Conferences and Short Courses, University of r~issouri-Columbia Extension Divi sion and especially to Dr. John Swanson who helped organize the multitude of administrative details; to ~lrs. Linda Bennett, CPS, for her continuing excellent efforts in typing the manuscripts for publication; and particularly to the sponsors, without whom there would have been no conference. Ralph R. This is the first comprehensive volume to look at the importance of short-chain fatty acids in digestion, the function of the large intestine and their role in human health. Short-chain fatty acids are the major product of bacterial fermentation of dietary carbohydrates in the human and animal large intestine. They represent the major end products of digestive processes occurring in the caecum and large intestine. As such, they form an important dietary component and it is increasingly recognised that they may have a significant role in protecting against large bowel cancer and in metabolism. Prepared by an international team of contributors who are at the forefront of this area of research, this volume will be an essential source of reference for gastroenterologists, nutritionists and others active in this area.

Quantitative Biology Of Metabolism written by Alfred Locker and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Science categories.

The development of the life sciences may be said to have effected a gradual transition from a more or less intuitive prescientific approach based on crude observation, via a more refined type of observation to experimentation and hence to the level of formal theories. Quantitative methods are introduced at the second level; they comprise: (a) quantitative design of experiments; (b) regrouping of experimental results; (c) evalua tion of results by means of mathematical or special statistical techniques. The last step implies the introduction of theoretical concepts, but we are not justified in speaking of theoretical science unless true theoretical con siderations-models or hypotheses-precede experiment, and this is then followed by an attempt to link results with theory so as to verify the theory. Biology at present seems to lie somewhere between the second and third level mentioned above, not yet having achieved the status of a theoretical science in all its branches. Thus, though the need for quantification and mathematical formulation is widely recognized, many biologists still believe that e.g. general systems theory is too abstract to be of use in handling concrete problems. Those, however, who look critically at the present state of affairs cannot adopt this attitude.

Sugar consumption is suspected to play an important role in the pathogenesis of diabetes, cardiovascular disorders, fatty liver disease, and some forms of cancers. Dietary sugars—fructose in particular—also have a potential role in obesity and metabolic diseases. Dietary Sugars and Health presents all aspects of dietary sugars as they relate to health and disease. It provides a review of the current science related to dietary sugars, ranging from historical and cultural perspectives to food science and production to basic research, animal trials, human pathophysiology, epidemiology, and public health policy implications. Each chapter features a concise, thorough summary of the current knowledge, including an overview of cutting-edge research, controversies, and future perspectives. The book provides a balanced approach through global and multidisciplinary contributions as well as input from various sectors, from academia to the food and beverage industry. The overall collection provides readers with a balanced and complete view of the science related to dietary sugars and health. This book is an invaluable reference for food scientists, nutrition scientists, clinical and translational researchers, obesity researchers, physiologists, public health scientists, and policy makers.
