The topic of "structural control", which had already experienced some attention through publications, for example by Roorda, Yao, Yang, Abdel-Rohman, Leipholz etc. , mostly in journals of ASCE, was given its fIrst international forum at the University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, via an ruTMf - Symposium held in June, 1979. This very successful event gathered experts from a variety of technical and theoretical domains in which control plays tradi tionally an essential role and was meant to present the new idea of structural control to a broad audience, thus triggering interest and commitment as well as cross-fertilization. However, the peculiarities of structural control were already sumciently well pointed out and stressed by those participants of the symposium who had devoted themselves earlier to this specwc topic for some time. The result of presentations and discussions are collected in a set of Proceedings entitled "Structural Control", published by North - Holland Publishing Company and the Solid Mechanics Division (SMD) of the University of Waterloo. The stimulation following this fIrst symposium was quite noticeable in the literature and led to the conviction of many researchers that after a reasonable period of time, a second meeting should be held to collect the fruits produced by the intermediate efforts of those working with increased emphasis on structural control. Therefore, Professors J. T. P. Yao, Department of Civil Engineering, Purdue University and H. H. E.

Organized by the International Association for Structural Control(IASC), and sponsored by the European Association for the Controlof Structures (EACS), the recent world conference on structuralcontrol (3WCSC) brought together engineers, scientists, architects, builders and other practitioners interested in the general fieldsof active, hybrid and passive vibration control, health monitoringand damage detection, intelligent/smart materials and systems.Applications included buildings, bridges, space structures andcivil infrastructures under the action of dynamic environments(earthquake, wind, traffic...) and man-made loads. It provideda valuable forum for the discussion of the most pressing concernsin structural control and its related topics. The conference covered a wide range of topics including activeand semi-active control devices, passive control devices, controlalgorithms for linear and non-linear systems, modeling andidentification of structural systems, sensors, health monitoringand damage detection, benchmark test of building and bridges, innovative materials for structural control, applications toaerospace structures, applications to bridges, applications tocritical structures, external dynamic force characteristics andcontrollability issues, implications of severe ground motions, windforces, codes for structural control, and so forth. Suchcomprehensive treatment of the most innovative developments instructural control will make these volumes an informative referencefor all researchers and engineers interested in this area. Proceedings of the US - Europe Workshop On Sensors andSmart Structures Technology Como and Somma Lombardo, Italy In the last few years, significant progress has been made in thearea of sensing technology and structural healthmonitoring/condition assessment in the US and Europe. Innovativeconcepts involving new hardware, algorithms, and software have beenproposed. There have also been several full-scale trialimplementations of densely sensor-instrumented infrastructures andhealth monitoring systems, as well as case studies on bridges inEurope and in the US. Much can be learnt through US/European collaboration in the areaof experimental verification on small, medium, large and full-scaleprojects. Moreover, a common framework for expanded future jointresearch can be developed on the increased understanding achievedthrough mutual learning. This workshop consisted of seminar sessions on several themeswhich included innovative sensing hardware, advances in wirelesstechnology, and damage detection/characterization and conditionassessment methodologies. In addition, there were several workshopsessions devoted to summarizing the status of the sensors and smartstructures technologies in these topics, identifying the compellingresearch issues, and formulating an action plan withrecommendations for development and implementation through possiblecollaborative research projects and sharing of scientific data.

Structural control is an approach aimed at the suppressing unwanted dynamic phenomena in civil structures. It proposes the use of methods and tools from control theory for the analysis and manipulation of a structure’s dynamic behavior, with emphasis on suppression of seismic and wind responses. This book addresses problems in optimal structural control. Its goal is to provide solutions and techniques for these problems by using optimal control theory. Thus, it deals with the solution of optimal control design problems related to passive and semi-active controlled structures. The formulated problems consider constraints and excitations which are common in structural control. Optimal control theory is used in order to solve these problems in a rigorous manner. Even though there are many works in this field, none comprise optimization techniques with firm theoretical background that address the solution of passive and semi-active structural control design problems. The book begins with a discussion on models which are commonly used for civil structures and control actuators. Modern theoretical notions, such as dissipativity and passivity of dynamic systems are discussed in context of the addressed problems. Optimal control theory and suitable successive methods are reviewed. Novel solutions for optimal passive and semi-active control design problems are derived, based on firm theoretical foundations. These results are verified by numerical simulations of typical civil structures which are subjected to different types of dynamic excitations.

A typical engineering task during the development of any system is, among others, to improve its performance in terms of cost and response. Improvements can be achieved either by simply using design rules based on the experience or in an automated way by using optimization methods that lead to optimum designs. Design Optimization of Active and Passive Structural Control Systems includes Earthquake Engineering and Tuned Mass Damper research topics into a volume taking advantage of the connecting link between them, which is optimization. This is a publication addressing the design optimization of active and passive control systems. This title is perfect for engineers, professionals, professors, and students alike, providing cutting edge research and applications.

This book presents a detailed discussion of intelligent techniques to measure the displacement of buildings when they are subjected to vibration. It shows how these techniques are used to control active devices that can reduce vibration 60–80% more effectively than widely used passive anti-seismic systems. After introducing various structural control devices and building-modeling and active structural control methods, the authors propose offset cancellation and high-pass filtering techniques to solve some common problems of building-displacement measurement using accelerometers. The most popular control algorithms in industrial settings, PD/PID controllers, are then analyzed and then combined with fuzzy compensation. The stability of this combination is proven with standard weight-training algorithms. These conditions provide explicit methods for selecting PD/PID controllers. Finally, fuzzy-logic and sliding-mode control are applied to the control of wind-induced vibration. The methods described are supported by reports of experimental studies on a two-story building prototype. This book is a valuable resource for academic researchers interested in the effects of control and mechatronic devices within buildings, or those studying the principles of vibration reduction. Practicing engineers working on the design and construction of any sort of high-rise or vulnerable building and concerned with the effects of either wind or seismic disturbances benefit from the efficacy of the methods proposed.
