Die „Studien über Autorität und Familie“ war das wichtigste Projekt, das das Institut für Sozialforschung unter der Leitung von Max Horkheimer in den Dreißiger Jahren verfolgte. Erich Fromm steuerte für diese Programmatik insofern die wichtigsten Gedanken bei, als er die Bedeutung, die die Autorität für das gesellschaftliche und familiäre Zusammenleben hat, mit der Theorie des autoritären Charakters sozialpsychologisch begründete. Für den von Max Horkheimer 1936 herausgegebenen Band Studien über Autorität und Familie steuerte Fromm den zentralen sozialpsychologischen Teil bei. In ihm bringt Fromm den „autoritären Charakter“ in seinen sadistischen und masochistischen Teilaspekten erstmals systematisch zur Darstellung. Hierbei bedient er sich noch weitgehend der Freudschen Libidotheorie als psychologischem Erklärungsrahmen. Fünf Jahre später wird er in seinem ersten großen Buch Die Furcht vor der Freiheit den autoritären Charakter nicht mehr libido-, sondern bezogenheitstheoretisch erklären. Der Beitrag "Geschichte und Methoden der Erhebungen" des Instituts für Sozialforschung wurde von Erich Fromm in seiner Eigenschaft als verantwortlicher Leiter für alle sozialpsychologischen Unternehmungen dieses Instituts verfasst. Er gibt einen guten Einblick in die Aktivitäten und Forschungsvorhaben des Instituts um die Zeit vor und nach der Emigration 1934 nach New York. Der zweite Teil des Beitrags handelt von den Untersuchungsmethoden, die zur Anwendung kamen. Fromm arbeitete mit einem offenen Fragebogen und zeigt in diesem Beitrag, wie er die von ihm entwickelte sozialpsychologische Methode empirisch anwendet. Er versucht, „aus der Gesamtheit der Antworten je eines Fragebogens die Charakterstruktur des Antwortenden zu erschließen und diese Strukturen miteinander zu vergleichen (Strukturstatistik)“. Der Beitrag ist ein wichtiges Dokument der Geschichte der qualitativen empirischen Sozialforschung.

The term 'Frankfurt School' is used widely, but sometimes loosely, to describe both a group of intellectuals and a specific social theory. Focusing on the formative and most radical years of the Frankfurt School, during the 1930s, this study concentrates on the Frankfurt School's most original contributions made to the work on a 'critical theory of society' by the philosophers Max Horkheimer and Herbert Marcuse, the psychologist Erich Fromm, and the aesthetician Theodor W. Adorno. Phil Slater traces the extent, and ultimate limits, of the Frankfurt School's professed relation to the Marxian critique of political economy. In considering the extent of the relation to revolutionary praxis, he discusses the socio-economic and political history of Weimar Germany in its descent into fascism, and considers the work of such people as Karl Korsch, Wilhelm Reich, Walter Benjamin and Bertolt Brecht, which directs a great deal of critical light on the Frankfurt School. While pinpointing the ultimate limitations of the Frankfurt School's frame of reference, Phil Slater also looks at the role their work played (largely against their wishes) in the emergence of the student anti-authoritarian movement in the 1960s. He shows that, in particular, the analysis of psychic and cultural manipulation was central to the young rebels' theoretical armour, but that even here, the lack of economic class analysis seriously restricts the critical edge of the Frankfurt School's theory. His conclusion is that the only way forward is to rescue the most radical roots of the Frankfurt School's work, and to recast these in the context of a practical theory of economic and political emancipation.

Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2020 im Fachbereich Politik - Politische Theorie und Ideengeschichte, Note: 1,0, Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Diese Ausarbeitung widmet sich der Herausarbeitung des autoritären, sadomasochistischen Charaktersyndroms, ferner soll untersucht werden welche Aspekte, welche Charakterzüge des autoritären Charakters sich in den späteren Studien 1950 wiederfinden, die zuvor von Fromm beschrieben wurden und weitergehend, welche "neuen" Persönlichkeitsmerkmale bzw. Charakterzüge von der Forschungsgruppe rund um Adorno ergänzt wurden. Zuvor sollen jedoch die zwei Werke vorgestellt werden, um einen Einblick in die unterschiedlichen Forschungskonzepte zu gewinnen. Am Schluss werden die Ergebnisse zusammengefasst und versucht grundlegende Unterschiede beider Autoren in ihren spezifischen Zugängen herauszuarbeiten. Die Autoritarismusforschung gilt als der erste empirische Beitrag dessen, was heutzutage unter dem kontrovers diskutierten Begriff der Rechtsextremismusforschung verstanden wird. Die durch Le Bon und Willhelm Reich, besonders aber Karl Marx und Sigmund Freud beeinflussten systematischen Forschungen des Frankfurter Instituts für Sozialforschung (IfS), gelten hierbei als die wegweisendsten Untersuchungen. Als bahnbrechende Innovation gilt der Versuch, den historischen Materialismus und die Psychoanalyse Freuds zu verknüpfen. Die in dieser Hausarbeit betrachteten Werke des IfS, die Studien zu "Autorität und Familie" (1936), sowie die "Studien zum autoritären Charakter" (1950) gelten aus unterschiedlichen Gründen als Meilensteine der Sozialforschung, gleichwohl sie den hohen Anspruch des Institutsleiters Horkheimer, die "Durchdringung konstruktiver und empirischer Verfahrensweisen" mithilfe interdisziplinärer Fachvertreter, zugunsten einer sich annähernden Kombination aus Theorie und Empirie, nie wirklich erreichten. Einer der theoretisch prägendsten Mitarbeiter der Anfangszeit des IfS war Erich Fromm, dessen Ausführungen im Gemeinschaftswerk „Autorität und Familie“ ein besonderer Stellenwert zugesprochen wird, da sie den theoretischen Kern des Konzeptes des autoritären Charakters dargelegt. Nach der Trennung vom IfS nahm Theodor W. Adorno, der Fromm schon früh wegen seines Freud-Revisionismus kritisierte, eine zentrale Rolle der sozialpsychologischen Forschungsprojekte des Instituts an.

This book tells the story of how madness came to play a prominent part in America’s political and cultural debates. It argues that metaphors of madness rise to unprecedented popularity amidst the domestic struggles of the early Cold War and become a pre-eminent way of understanding the relationship between politics and culture in the United States. In linking the individual psyche to society, psychopathology contributes to issues central to post-World War II society: a dramatic extension of state power, the fate of the individual in bureaucratic society, the political function of emotions, and the limits to admissible dissent. Such vocabulary may accuse opponents of being crazy. Yet at stake is a fundamental error of judgment, for which madness provides welcome metaphors across US diplomacy and psychiatry, social movements and criticism, literature and film. In the process, major parties and whole historical eras, literary movements and social groups are declared insane. Reacting against violence at home and war abroad, countercultural authors oppose a sane madness to irrational reason—romanticizing the wisdom of the schizophrenic and paranoia’s superior insight. As the Sixties give way to a plurality of lifestyles an alternative vision arrives: of a madness now become so widespread and ordinary that it may, finally, escape pathology.
