"If it is beyond your power to control, let it go.""Do not wish that all things will go well with you, but that you will go well with all things.""In this way, you will overcome life's challenges, rather than be overcome by them." Epictetus (c. AD 50-135) was a former Roman slave who became a great teacher, deeply influencing the future emperor Marcus Aurelius among many others. His philosophy, Stoicism, was practical, not theoretical--aimed at relieving human suffering here and now. Epictetus knew suffering--besides being enslaved, he was lame in one leg and walked with a crutch. The Manual is a collection of Epictetus' essential teachings and pithy sayings, compiled by one of his students. It is the most accessible and actionable guide to Stoic philosophy, as relevant today as it was in the Roman Empire. This new edition, published by Ancient Renewal, is rendered in contemporary English by Sam Torode.

* Our summary is short, simple and pragmatic. It allows you to have the essential ideas of a big book in less than 30 minutes. By reading this summary, you will learn how to live free by learning to detach yourself from your suffering. You will also discover : that happiness depends only on you ; that to live happily and freely, you must exist in harmony with nature; that philosophy is above all a constant practice that must lead to wisdom; that only your faculty of choice is really in your power. Not to let the misfortunes of life get to you, while at the same time removing fear, jealousy, envy or resentment from your heart, is the mark of truly free men. At least, this is what the philosophers of the Stoic school, founded in the third century BC by Zeno of Citium, think. It is this impassivity and serenity that Epictetus, a Stoic philosopher born between 50 and 60 AD, aims at. His very life is an example of this: a former slave, he became the most famous philosopher of his time. Travelers came from far and wide to attend his lectures, which one of his students, Arrien, summarized in The Manual of Epictetus. A call to radically transform your relationship with the world, this work is a promise of liberation. Are you ready to practice freedom? *Buy now the summary of this book for the modest price of a cup of coffee!

A Simple, Clear New Edition of The Manual Epictetus (c. 50-135 CE) was brought as a slave to Rome, where he became a great teacher. His philosophy, called Stoicism, was practical, not theoretical--aimed at relieving suffering here and now. And Epictetus knew suffering. Besides being a former slave, he was lame in one leg and walked with a crutch. Later in life, he was exiled to Greece by Emperor Domitian. Turning these obstacles to his advantage, Epictetus learned that lasting peace and happiness can only come from within. The Manual is a collection of Epictetus' essential teachings. It points the way to inner harmony and freedom, through all of life's storms and stresses. This new edition, paraphrased by Sam Torode, was created with younger readers in mind. With all the pressures today's students face, The Manual is needed now more than ever. TWO BOOKS IN ONE: The hardcover version of The Manual: 21st Century Edition also includes As a Man Thinketh: 21st Century Edition, which paraphrases James Allen's powerful exploration of the power of thought.

Contains The Discourses/Fragments/Enchiridion 'I must die. But must I die bawling?' Epictetus, a Greek Stoic and freed slave, ran a thriving philosophy school in Nicopolis in the early second century AD. His animated discussions were celebrated for their rhetorical wizardry and were written down by Arrian, his most famous pupil. The Discourses argue that happiness lies in learning to perceive exactly what is in our power to change and what is not, and in embracing our fate to live in harmony with god and nature. In this personal, practical guide to the ethics of Stoicism and moral self-improvement, Epictetus tackles questions of freedom and imprisonment, illness and fear, family, friendship and love. Translated and Edited with an Introduction by Robert Dobbin

The Enchiridion or Handbook of Epictetus is a short manual of Stoic ethical advice compiled by Arrian, a 2nd-century disciple of the Greek philosopher Epictetus. Although the content is mostly derived from the Discourses of Epictetus, it is not a summary of the Discourses but rather a compilation of practical precepts. Eschewing metaphysics, Arrian focuses his attention on Epictetus's work applying philosophy to daily life. Thus, the book is a manual to show the way to achieve mental freedom and happiness in all circumstances. The Enchiridion was well-known in the ancient world, and in the medieval period, it was specially adapted for use in Greek-speaking monasteries. In the 15th century it was translated into Latin, and then, with the advent of printing, into multiple European languages. It reached the height of popularity in the 17th century, in parallel with the Neo-stoicism movement.

The Good Life Handbook is a rendering of Enchiridion in plain English. It is a concise summary of the teachings of Epictetus, as transcribed and later summarized by his student Flavius Arrian. The Handbook is a guide to the good life. It answers the question, "How can we be good and live free and happy, no matter what else is happening around us?" Ancient Stoics lived in a time of turmoil under difficult conditions. So, the solutions they found to living free were tested under very stringent conditions. For example, the author of this Handbook was a lame slave who made himself free and happy later in life by following the principles set out in this book.
