Are the printers purchased or leased? How much are libraries paying for their 3D printers? How heavily used are 3D printers by library patrons? How much staff time is consumed by 3D Printing? How much are materials costs for 3D printers? What is the best way to publicize the availability of a 3D printer? What kinds of technical problems do 3D printers pose for staff and library patrons? How many patrons attend classes to learn about 3D printing? How long is the typical 3D printing session? What are library patrons making with their 3D printers? This study, based on data and commentary from 118 directors, deans and provosts of academic libraries, probes academic library use of and satisfaction with 3D Printing and other Makerspace technology. It looks at their current policies and future plans in this area. The report presents detailed data on the percentage of libraries that use the technology, how much they invested and how much they plan to invest in the future. It also presents specific data on the percentage of libraries planning to newly implement or expand their 3D Printing/Makerspace presence, and their level of satisfaction with the technology. Data in the report is broken out by numerous institutional and personal characteristics of the survey respondents, including size and type of college, public/private status, enrollment level, and tuition level, as well as the gender, educational background and age of the survey participant.

The report looks at which faculty use 3D printing, how much they use it, and where they use it; in the library or in other university locations, for example. It also probes the question of how much faculty value this capability and how they have used it. Data in the 50-page report is broken out by more than 10 criteria including but not limited to: country of origin of faculty member (with separate data for the USA, Canada, UK/Ireland and Australia), age and gender of faculty member, academic field, size of university, academic title or position, world university ranking, and many other useful variables. Just a few of the report's many findings are that:*8.59% of faculty sampled have used or assigned for use a 3D printer. *Older faculty were somewhat less likely than others to have used a non-library located 3D printer; for example, only 6.34% of faculty aged 60 or over have used one.*Respondents mentioned the following institutions for their particularly creative or admirable use of 3D printing in research or instruction: the San Francisco Art Institute, the Creative Lab at the Salt Lake City Public Library, the University of Manchester Aerospace and Civil Engineering Faculties, University of California Davis, Temple University, University of California Berkeley, Technische Universität München, Bucknell University, Rochester University, Virginia Commonwealth University (Sculpture).Faculty from the following universities participated in the study: Australian National University, Brown University, Carleton University, Carnegie Mellon University, Drexel University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Griffith University, Imperial College London, McGill University, Miami University, Monash University, Penn State - University Park, Penn State College of Medicine, Pennsylvania State University, Princeton University, Rice University,Rutgers University, Saint Louis University, Staffordshire University, Swinburne University of Technology, Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin, University Nottingham, University of Alberta, University of Birmingham, University of California Riverside, University of California Santa Barbara, University of Chicago, University of Connecticut, University of Leeds, University of Maryland, University of Michigan, University of Nebraska at Omaha, University of Nottingham, University of South Florida, University of Strathclyde, University of Technology Sydney, and more.

Moving beyond simplistic equipment lists, this book provides contextual and practical information to help academic library personnel learn how to plan, collaborate, and sustain relevant makerspaces positioned within the broader ecology of campus innovation. The makerspace movement within academic libraries has largely focused on providing space and equipment for making. Academic libraries, however, have a unique opportunity to push beyond the 3D printer to create makerspaces that complement the broader ecology of innovation happening on campus. Intended for academic library personnel, this book is for those seeking guidance on how to establish a makerspace that is more than an equipment room. Katy Mathuews and Daniel Harper provide important context for the maker movement, a review of the process of making, and an overview of the various types of makerspaces, including the hub-and-spoke model, the centralized model, and the mobile makerspace. Additionally, the book provides practical steps to consider, including situating the academic library makerspace within the campus environment, creating valuable collaborations on campus, finding innovative ways to support the entire making process, programming, curriculum planning, and sustaining daily operations such as staffing, funding, and public service.
