Each volume in the 7-volume series The World of Science Education reviews research in a key region of the world. These regions include North America, South and Latin America, Asia, Australia and New Zealand, Europe and Israel, North Africa and the Middle East, and Sub-Saharan Africa. The focus of this Handbook is on Australasia (a region loosely recognized as that which includes Australia and New Zealand plus nearby Pacific nations such as Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Fiji, Tonga, Vanuatu, and the Samoan islands) science education and the scholarship that most closely supports this program. The reviews of the research situate what has been accomplished within a given field in Australasian rather than international context. The purpose therefore is to articulate and exhibit regional networks and trends that produced specific forms of science education. The thrust lies in identifying the roots of research programs and sketching trajectories—focusing the changing façade of problems and solutions within regional contexts. The approach allows readers review what has been done and accomplished, what is missing, and what might be done next.

In August 2005, over 500 researchers from the field of science education met at the 5th European Science Education Research Association conference. Two of the main topics at this conference were: the decrease in the number of students interested in school science and concern about the worldwide outcomes of studies on students’ scientific literacy. This volume includes edited versions of 37 outstanding papers presented, including the lectures of the keynote speakers.

PREFACE In recent years, there have been developments in education and training within the framework of the rapid advancement of technology and changing social needs. The increase in innovative approaches has created opportunities for students worldwide, and digital transformation in particular has played an important role in reshaping education. Digital transformation in particular has played an important role in reshaping education. From using digital tools to adopting online platforms and personalized learning and skill development, education is experiencing a profound paradigm shift. Researchers examining this field's main trends and developments are trying to contribute to the international field with their in- depth studies. The learning environment refers to the different physical spaces, settings and platforms where students engage in learning. Students can learn at school, in the cafeteria, out of school, at home, outdoors or in any digital environment as an alternative to the classroom. Therefore, the concept of learning environment covers a very wide range. Today, studies on learning environments (physical, social and emotional conditions surrounding the student, technological/digital student-oriented learning environments) attract attention. This century, where technology is at its peak and causes rapid changes in every field, despite its positive contributions, it may prevent students from developing critical and creative thinking skills. For this reason, idealistic researchers in the field have focused their research on appropriate methods, strategies and techniques for children to think multidimensionally. This book chapter, “International Studies on Learning Environments”, focuses on important topics that will contribute to the field. From computer games to the etymology and history of games, from textbooks to argumentation-based games and forest schools, this academic perspective includes valuable research for academics, students and teachers working in this field. So much so that sometimes the passion for computer games overrides the commitment to school and the determination to work. Computer games, which children and young people spend a lot of time playing, gradually reach the level of addiction. technological Most of the environments time, that support students in areas such as research, problem solving, critical thinking, etc. sometimes negatively affect children/students with their uncontrolled, involuntary and unconscious use. However, games play an important role in children's social, cognitive and sociocultural development when they serve the right purpose. Games, which have a great impact on the satisfaction of children's sense of curiosity, the development of self expression skills, the acquisition of problem-solving skills and the development of hand-eye coordination, have evolved into a virtual environment today, especially in the field of Textbooks and digital textbooks (e- textbooks, e-texts...) as another learning environment are seen as comfort zones for students and teachers due to their ease of access and practicality. In addition to structuring and developing learning, guiding learning, enabling self-directed learning and contributing to assessment and evaluation, they also transfer values and ideas. By naturalizing the dominant view through the texts in the books, it provides social control in a silent way. Textbooks containing reading texts usually exhibit a structure that accompanies the social order rather than universal topics or definitions in order to contribute to the social order. For this reason, in textbooks, women are placed in the family design with their roles as mothers and wives. Men's roles, on the other hand, are to produce and have status by working outside. Argumentation is very important for the effective realization of education and training. Researchers are trying to develop new methods in every field of learning so that students can make comments and establish relationships between two knowledge objects from an early age. One of these is the “predict observe-explain” education. method, which is structured for science in a natural environment, students' education in schools. Especially in science education, it is seen as important to critically examine a claim, collect relevant data and present these data as evidence. Therefore, POE activities are effective in increasing academic achievement and gaining problem solving skills. Forest schools as an alternative and inspirational learning environment are also found in the literature. In this model/environment, which covers a long period of time, takes place through play and realizes active and experiential learning, students play and discover through play. At the end of this process social, emotional and physical skills improve. The application of this method, which mostly accompanies the preschool period, at other grade levels is very important for the development of children's confidence. self-esteem and As can be seen, almost all of the studies are aimed at realizing effective and permanent learning, raising awareness and developing critical thinking skills. In this sense, all the studies in this section are attempts written with the philosophy of doing the best for the child.

Furthermore, the data suggest that POEs are effective in identifying students' achievement across levels within a substrand of the Australian Student Outcome Statements and enable the teacher to observe and document a spread of achievement over a range of levels rather that a single outcome. The results of this research suggest that POEs are effective in diagnosing students' understanding of science and their level of achievement. The POE tasks can be used by teachers to insightfully design learning activities and strategies that start from the students' viewpoint rather than that of the teacher or the scientist. Findings in this research have implications for curriculum development and learning strategies, teacher development, and the promotion and assessment of students' understanding and level of achievement.

The purpose of this research program was to explore the effectiveness of the Predict-Observe-Explain (POE) teaching/learning to diagnose students' understanding of science and identify students' level of achievement with reference to the Science Student Outcome Statements for Australian schools. This research employed an interpretive action research approach with a sample of students from three Australian metropolitan high schools in grades 9,10,11, and 12 whose ages ranged between 14 and 17 years. Three data collection methods were used to generate data for interpretation, namely, Chi et al.'s theory of ontological categories, Hewson and Hennessey's conceptual change theory to determine the epistemological status of student's understanding of science, and Chinn and Brewer's model to classify types of students' responses to contradictory observations. The findings in this research reveal that these POEs were effective in capturing a range of possible student observations and prediction outcomes when worded in an open-ended format.Quality information on students' understanding and on the way they responded to contradictory data was obtained when POEs were administe
