By December 1972, the Paris Peace Talks to end the Vietnam War had fallen apart. With Congress preparing to cut off all funding for the war, President Richard Nixon had to act quickly to pressure the North Vietnamese into signing a peace agreement. He ordered the massive bombing of Hanoi for the first time by America's big stick, the Strategic Air Command's B-52s. But instead of being overwhelmed, the North Vietnamese SAM missile crews initially shattered the B-52 force. For eleven days the air battle swung back and forth, moving from what appeared to be a certain U.S. victory, to what appeared to be a North Vietnamese victory to the ultimate ambiguous denouement. Marshall Michel has used hundreds of formerly classified documents from both American and Vietnamese archives and interviews with dozens of Americans and Vietnamese who participated at all levels to tell, for the first time, the dramatic story of this critical battle in the war. Moving from the White House to the B-52 cockpits to the missile sites and POW camps of Hanoi, "The Eleven Days of Christmas" is a gripping tale of heroism and incompetence in a battle whose political and military legacy is still a matter of controversy.

The Eleven Days of Christmas takes us on a twelve month journey in the life of some everyday folk in Lancaster. Councillor Horace Board is an honest and hard working servant of the people. But his unimpeachable reputation is turned upside down following the death of his aunt in Helsinki. Meanwhile, Adam Nicola, a fresh faced but struggling recruit on The Lancaster Star, stumbles across the story of a lifetime. One that could help his readers recover millions of pounds; and might just save his career. Responsibility for solving this northern tale of robbery, fraud and just a modicum of fly tipping, is down to a local policeman. Sargent Tony Greig is on the case and his starting point is on a wall in an area of the local park rarely frequented by the maddening crowds of Lancaster. By the time you discover if Sgt Greig gets his man, woman or child, you'll be left asking yourself one question. Do you think your true love ever envisaged giving you anything like this, during The Eleven Days of Christmas.

In 11 Days In December, master historian and biographer Stanley Weintraub tells the remarkable story of the Battle of the Bulge as it has never been told before, from frozen foxholes to barn shelters to boxcars packed with wretched prisoners of war. In late December 1944, as the Battle of the Bulge neared its climax, a German loudspeaker challenge was blared across GI lines in the Ardennes: "How would you like to die for Christmas?" In the inhospitable forest straddling Belgium, France, and Luxembourg, only the dense, snow-laden evergreens recalled the season. Most troops hardly knew the calendar day they were trying to live through, or that it was Hitler's last, desperate effort to alter the war's outcome. Yet the final Christmas season of World War II matched desperation with inspiration. When he was offered an ultimatum to surrender the besieged Belgian town of Bastogne, Brigadier General Anthony McAuliffe defied the Germans with the memorable one-word response, "Nuts!" And as General Patton prayed for clear skies to allow vital airborne reinforcements to reach his trapped men, he stood in a medieval chapel in Luxembourg and spoke to God as if to a commanding general: "Sir, whose side are you on?" His prayer was answered. The skies cleared, the tide of battle turned, and Allied victory in World War II was assured. Christmas 1944 proved to be one of the most fateful days in world history. Many men did extraordinary things, and extraordinary things happened to ordinary men. "A clear cold Christmas," Patton told his diary, "lovely weather for killing Germans, which seems a bit queer, seeing whose birthday it is." Peace on earth and good will toward men would have to wait. 11 Days in December is unforgettable.

Launch The Intruders written by Carol Reardon and has been published by University Press of Kansas this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-04-30 with History categories.

Each pilot and bombardier/navigator sat side by side in an all-weather jet built for low-level bombing runs, precision targeting, and night strikes. Their success--and their very lives--depended on teamwork in flying their versatile A-6 Intruders. And when the North Vietnamese mounted a major offensive in 1972, they answered the call. Carol Reardon chronicles the operations of Attack Squadron 75, the “Sunday Punchers,” and their high-risk bombing runs launched off the U.S.S. Saratoga during the famous LINEBACKER campaigns. Based on unparalleled access to crew members and their families, her book blends military and social history to offer a unique look at the air war in Southeast Asia, as well as a moving testament to the close-knit world of naval aviators. Theirs was one of the toughest jobs in the military: launching off the carrier in rough seas as well as calm, flying solo and in formation, dodging dense flak and surface-to-air missiles, delivering ordnance on target, and recovering aboard safely. Celebrating the men who climbed into the cockpits as well as those who kept them flying, Reardon takes readers inside the squadron’s ready room and onto the flight decks to await the call, “Launch the Intruders!” Readers share the adrenaline-pumping excitement of each mission--as well as those heart-stopping moments when a downed aircraft brought home to all, in flight and on board, that every aspect of their lives was constantly shadowed by danger and potential death. More than a mere combat narrative, Launch the Intruders interweaves human drama with familial concerns, domestic politics, and international diplomacy. Fliers share personal feelings about killing strangers from a distance while navy wives tell what it’s like to feel like a stranger at home. And as the war rages on, headlines like Jane Fonda’s visit to Hanoi and the Paris Peace Accords are all viewed through the lens of this heavily tasked, hard-hitting attack squadron. A rousing tale of men and machines, of stoic determination in the face of daunting odds, Reardon’s tale shines a much-deserved light on group of men whose daring exploits richly deserve to be much better known.
