Excerpt from The Exegesis of Life The circumstances of my life, added to the general ferment of the human mind, which seems to be in the painful throes of travail for the birth of a new truth, have impelled me to look within myself, and endeavor to find in the recesses of my own mind, if I could make anything out of that wonderful existence, of which I am a part, and which surrounds me on every side. For the last few years, I have witnessed around me, and read in the magazines and newspapers of the day, signs of a mighty controversy going on and raging between the would-be champions of truth: the theologians on one side and the scientists on the other. It has struck me, that their quarrel must prove interminable, unless they can be brought, somehow, to look at the object of their quarrel, from the same point of view, a rather difficult feat to perform, as neither, as far as I can judge, are willing to budge an inch from their respective stand-points. The theologians persist in seeing nothing but God, and nature outside of God, as the work of God; and the scientists nothing but Nature, ignoring God and refusing to see or to recognize any intelligent or guiding force in Nature. Scriptural interpretation was an important form of scholarship for Christians in late antiquity. For no one does this claim ring more true than Origen of Alexandria (185-254), one of the most prolific scholars of Scripture in early Christianity. This book examines his approach to the Bible through a biographical lens: the focus is on his account of the scriptural interpreter, the animating centre of the exegetical enterprise. In pursuing this largely neglected line of inquiry, Peter W. Martens discloses the contours of Origen's sweeping vision of scriptural exegesis as a way of life. For Origen, ideal interpreters were far more than philologists steeped in the skills conveyed by Greco-Roman education. Their profile also included a commitment to Christianity from which they gathered a spectrum of loyalties, guidelines, dispositions, relationships and doctrines that tangibly shaped how they practiced and thought about their biblical scholarship. The study explores the many ways in which Origen thought ideal scriptural interpreters (himself included) embarked upon a way of life, indeed a way of salvation, culminating in the everlasting contemplation of God. This new and integrative thesis takes seriously how the discipline of scriptural interpretation was envisioned by one of its pioneering and most influential practitioners.
