Excerpt from The Exegesis of Life The circumstances of my life, added to the general ferment of the human mind, which seems to be in the painful throes of travail for the birth of a new truth, have impelled me to look within myself, and endeavor to find in the recesses of my own mind, if I could make anything out of that wonderful existence, of which I am a part, and which surrounds me on every side. For the last few years, I have witnessed around me, and read in the magazines and newspapers of the day, signs of a mighty controversy going on and raging between the would-be champions of truth: the theologians on one side and the scientists on the other. It has struck me, that their quarrel must prove interminable, unless they can be brought, somehow, to look at the object of their quarrel, from the same point of view, a rather difficult feat to perform, as neither, as far as I can judge, are willing to budge an inch from their respective stand-points. The theologians persist in seeing nothing but God, and nature outside of God, as the work of God; and the scientists nothing but Nature, ignoring God and refusing to see or to recognize any intelligent or guiding force in Nature. Excerpt from Literary Interpretation of Life Not a document filled with dry facts and bar ren dates, but a document whose every word pulses with the very life-blood of human hearts. As we discover man's attempt to express himself in all of his works, so we may discover it here. Perhaps, indeed, in larger and richer measure than anywhere else, because here man has found his most perfect medium of expression and has uttered himself most freely and most fully. Excerpt from The Second Things of Life 'Take Mark, and bring him with thee: for he is useful to me for ministering.' - 2 Tim. iv. 11. On the shore of the bay of Naples, north of Pozzuoli, there is a ruined temple of Serapis. Only three columns survive, but they have one striking and significant characteristic. For about nine feet the marble is perforated by the borings of a marine bivalve, which can still be traced within the holes drilled into the stone. Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. The Interpretation Of Life written by Gerhardt C. Mars and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-02-08 with Philosophy categories.

Excerpt from The Interpretation of Life: In Which Is Shown the Relation of Modern Culture to Christian Science There are doubtless many intelligent men, in the professional and business worlds, who are deeply interested in the things of the mind, and who would gladly familiarize themselves with the spiritual treasures of the best philosophical thought, were not such treasures so obscurely hidden in the depths of technical phraseology and recondite utterance as to render them practically non-existent for the general reader. This volume attempts the ambitious and hazardous task of gathering up the best that has been thought and said by the noblest minds, in the past or present, and of putting it forth in such terms and within such limits as will render it appreciable to the popular intelligence. The attempt, however, aims at more than a mere summation of ideas, or an eclectic, philosophical anthology, for there is presented, as the title of the volume indicates, an interpretation of life; but an interpretation made in the light of the highest and best thoughts of man. Everyone, in his way and measure, necessarily interprets life; for the mere fact of self-conscious intelligence involves some rational account of things. That is, the life of man, as a rational being, is always in itself an interpretation of some kind, no matter how humble and inadequate. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance to familiarize ourselves, so far as possible, with the noblest thoughts, feelings, and purposes of those men who have lived most and best, or who have more largely, broadly, and deeply comprehended within themselves the meaning of life.
